This morning I went to the shoes shop to buy a pair of new shoes. When I got there, I noticed a foreign lady talk to a salesgirl. But the salesgirl didn’t understand that the foreigner was saying. They both looked worrying. I went up to help them. The lady is Australian. She wanted to buy a pair of traveling shoes. So I told it to the salesgirl. The lady was very much glad when she took it. She sings high praise for my spoken English. All of them expressed their thanks to me. I felt happy that I expressed myself free in English.

【3】that →what 考查賓語(yǔ)從句。understand后是賓語(yǔ)從句指明白的內(nèi)容,要用what引導(dǎo)并在賓語(yǔ)從句中做賓語(yǔ),故that →what。

【5】is后加an 考查冠詞。 Australian是可數(shù)名詞,故is后加an。

very修飾形容詞glad,very much修飾動(dòng)詞。故此處用very,去掉much。

【7】it →them 考查代詞。句中指這位女士買到鞋(a pair of traveling shoes),根據(jù)shoes代詞要用復(fù)數(shù)them,故it →them。

【9】All →Both 考查代詞。 故All →Both。

UGG boots have been a winter-weather fashion for several years now, combining function, comfort, warmth and even some style. What many UGG-enthusiasts don’t know is that their boots are a breeding ground for bacteria and cause foot problems.

Doctors believe the boots, which are particularly popular among young teenage girls, are leading to a rise in the number of people suffering pains in their feet and knees.

Dr. Ian Drysdale, head of the British College of Osteopathic Medicine, believes because the foot does not get the proper support on the inside, it will lead to more ankle, knee, hip and back problems. “These boots are not designed for outside wear. Just because something becomes a trend or fashionable doesn’t mean it’s good or right, ” he said, “The particular problem with this type of footwear is that it is unsupported. It’s a slipper. You wouldn’t normally expect to be doing outdoor activities from something that’s indoor. If you decide to wear your pajamas outside all the time, someone will come up and say it’s not a good idea.” Dr. Drysdale explained that the feet issues become a particular problem among young teenage girls, whose bones are “plastic” and developing when they are growing. “Iw

Mike O’Neill, a consultant surgeon, said, “As the foot slides around, you get wear and tear (磨損)on the joints on the inside of the foot The ankle is in the wrong position, the thigh bone also changes position, and you get an abnormal movement in the pelvis, which leads to back problems.

UGG Australia, who makes the designer version of the boots, told The Daily Mirror that their boots are “comfort” rather than “performance” footwear and consumers should be aware of “knockoffs(仿制品) which lack reinforced heels in their boots.

A good modern newspaper is an extraordinary piece of reading. It is remarkable first for what it contains: the range of news from local crime to international politics, from sports to business to fashion to science, and the range of comment and special features as well, from editorial page to feature articles and interviews to criticism of books, art, theatre, and music. A newspaper is even more remarkable for the way one reads it: never completely, never straight through, but always by jumping from here to there, in and out, glancing at one piece, reading another article all the way through, reading just a few paragraphs of the next. A good modern newspaper offers a variety to attract many different readers, but far more than any one reader is interested in. What brings this variety together in one place is its topicality(時(shí)事性) , its immediate relation to what is happening in your world and your locality now. But immediacy and the speed of production that goes with it mean also that much of what appears in a newspaper has no more than transient value. For all these reasons, no two people really read the same paper: what each person does is to put together, out of the pages of that day’s paper, his own selection and sequence, his own newspaper. For all these reasons, reading newspapers efficiently, which means getting what you want from them without missing things you need but without wasting time, demands skill and self-awareness as you modify and apply the techniques of reading.

【1】 A modern newspaper is remarkable for all the following except its ________.

A. popularity B. uniform style

C. wide coverage D.speed in reporting news

2According to the passage, the reason why no two people really read the “same” newspaper is that __________.

A. people have different views about what a good newspaper is

B. people are rarely interested in the same kind of news

C.people scan for the news they are interested in

D. different people prefer different newspapers

3 It can be concluded from the passage that newspaper readers _________.

A. apply reading techniques skillfully

B. jump from one newspaper to another

C. appreciate the variety of a newspaper

D. read a newspaper selectively usually

4 A good newspaper offers “a variety” to readers because __________.

A. it has to cover things that happen in a certain locality

B. readers like to read different newspapers

C.it tries to serve different readers

D. readers are difficult to please

5 The best title for this passage would be “__________”.

A. The Characteristics of a Good Newspaper

B. The Variety of a Good Newspaper

C. The Importance of Newspaper Topicality

D. Some Suggestions on How to Read a Newspaper
