ISBN: 962001359X
Speak Up(Pre-Intermediate)
By Bev Kusuya, Nako Zeki
ISBN: 0583338050
“Teach the students about your culture and help them talk about their own.” How often are these worthy goals kept from being achieved by the limitations of your beginner level learners? Students at all levels want to talk about culture.
Topics include food, shopping, sports, fashion, the roles of men and women, health, music, and many more.
These are all chosen from surveys of over 15,000 students about their own interests in cross-cultural communication.
“Let’s Speak” and “Speak Up” share a special but excellent way that allows all students to take part in.
The series has questions which start thinking and then help collect opinions about personal topics. Conversation practice is provided by ready to use (現(xiàn)成的)models of basic exchanges on the topic. Also, the cultural information presented in the series comes in the form of interesting, relevant(相關(guān)的)facts and ideas from other countries through listening tasks and Culture Quiz exercises.
Team activities in books provide lively problem solving games to enable sharing and comparison of cultural values.
“Let’s Speak” is fit for entry level students of all ages. “Speak Up” provides for the needs of higher level beginners, offering the same careful listening and speaking help, but with slightly more open ended discussion.

Leaves are nature’s food factories. Plants take water from the ground through their roots. They take a gas called carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air. Plants use sunlight to turn water and CO2 into glucose(葡萄糖).Glucose is a kind of sugar. Plants use glucose as food for energy to grow. The way plants turn water and CO2 into glucose is called photosynthesis (光合作用).That means “putting together with light .” A chemical called chlorophyll helps make photosynthesis happen. Chlorophyll is green. It gives plants their green colour. As summer ends and autumn comes, the days get shorter and shorter. This is how the trees “know” to begin getting ready for winter.
During winter, there is not enough light or water for photosynthesis .The trees will rest, and live on the food they have stored during the summer. They begin to close their food-making  factories. The green Chlorophyll disappears from the leaves. Then, we begin to see yellow and orange colours. A few of these colors stay in the leaves all the time. We just can’t see them in the summer, because they are covered up by the green Chlorophyll.
Red and purple colors we see in leaves are made mostly in the autumn. In some trees, like maples, glucose is stored in the leaves after photosynthesis stops. Sunlight and the cool nights of autumn turn this glucose into red. The brown color of trees like oaks is made from wastes left in the leaves.
52 the underlined word“chlorophyll” in the first Para means_________in Chinese.
A 葉綠素           B 氧氣          C 胡蘿卜素      D 蛋白質(zhì)
53 The way _________is called photosynthesis.
A  Plants get CO2 from the air           B  plants take water from the ground
C  plants turn water and CO2 into glucose.  D Plants use glucose as food for energy to grow.
54 The gas called carbon dioxide is from the_________
A  ground      B roots        C air      D sunlight
55 Which of the following is not true?
A.when autumn and winter come, the days get shorter and shorter.
B.During winter trees rest and live on the food they store during the summer.’
C.During winter small amounts of yellow and orange colors are kept in the leaves all the time.
D.Trees begin to stop making food in summer.

第二節(jié)根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。 Every year more people recognize that it is wrong to kill wildlife for “sport”. Progress in this direction is slow because shooting is not a sport for watching and only those few who take part in it realize the cruelty and destruction.
The number of gunners, however, grows rapidly.  67 They are subjected to advertisements of gun producers who describe shooting as good for their health and carrying gun as a way of putting redder blood in the veins(血管).  68 In school they view motion pictures which are supposedly meant to teach them how to deal with arms safely but which are actually designed to stimulate a desire to own a gun.
Wildlife is disappearing because of shooting and the loss of wildland habitat(棲息地). Habitat loss will continue with our increasing population, but can we slow the loss of wildlife caused by shooting? 69
70  Although most people do not shoot, they seem to forgive shooting for sport because they know little or nothing about it. The only answer, then, is to bring the truth about sport shooting to the great majority of people.
Now, it is time to realize that animals have the same right to live as we do and that there is nothing fair or right about a person with a gun shooting the harmless and beautiful creatures. The gunners like to describe what they do as character-building, but we know that to wound an animal and watch it go through the suffering of dying can make nobody happy.  71
A.There doesn’t seem to be any chance if the serious condition of our wildlife is not improved.
B.They are persuaded by gunner magazines with stories honoring the chase and the kill.
C.If, as they would have you believe, carrying guns and killing improve human character, then perhaps we should encourage war.
D.Children who are too young to develop proper judgments through independent thought are led a long way away by their parents who have guns.
E. The films children watch at school actually encourage them to have guns of their own.
F. Wildlife belongs to everyone instead of the gunners alone.
G. Most people do not seem to be against hunting because it helps to build human character.
