Grandparents Answer a Call

As a third generation native of Brownsville, Texas, Mildred Garza never planned to move away. Even when her daughter and son asked her to move to San Antonio to help with their children, she politely refused. Only after a year of friendly discussion did Ms. Garza finally say yes. That was four years ago. Today all three generations regard the move as a success, giving them a closer relationship than they would have had in separate cities.

No statistics(數(shù)據(jù)) show the number of grandparents like Garza who are moving closer to adult children and grandchildren. Yet there are evidence showing that the trend(趨勢(shì)) is growing. Even President Obama’s mother-in-law, Marian Robinson, has agreed to leave Chicago and move into the White House to help care for her granddaughters. According to a study by grandparents. com, 83% of the people say Mrs. Robinson’s decision will influence grandparents in the American family. Two-thirds believe more families will follow the example of Obama’s family.

“In the 1960s we were all a little wild and couldn’t wait to get away from home far enough or fast enough to prove we could do it on our own,” says Christine Crosby, publisher of Grand, a magazine for grandparents. “We now realize how important family is and how important it is to be near them, especially when you’re raising children.”

Moving is not for everyone. Almost every grandparent wants to be with his or her grandchildren and is willing to make sacrifices(奉獻(xiàn)), but sometimes it is wiser to say no and visit frequently instead. Having your grandchildren far away is hard, especially knowing your adult child is struggling, but giving up the life you know may be harder.

A.The majority think it will be a trend.

B.Few people responded sympathetically.

C.83% believed it had a bad influence.

A.They were unsure of themselves.

B.They wanted to live far away from their parents.

How to Be Interesting

Everybody tries hard to be interesting and well-liked in his or her life. If you feel like you are boring or dull, don't fret (苦惱)! 1. Read this article to learn how.

2. The more you know about what is going on in the world, the more you can contribute to conversations. Interesting people are the ones who can bring something new to a conversation and share fun facts rather than just sitting there nodding. The more you learn, the better conversationalist you will become. So keep yourself educated by reading books and staying up-to-date with current events in the news and pop culture.

How is everything going with you? As for me, I have a great news to share—I will finally get to be in a book!

Last Saturday morning, Dad and I were eating breakfast while we heard a knock on the door. I rushed to open the door. It was our neighbor Miss Lydia, that draws pictures for children’s books. Miss Lydia greeted me with a smile, looking happily to see me. Remembering my best manner, I said, “Hello, Miss Lydia. Won’t you come in?” Miss Lydia came in, sitting at the breakfast table, and said to my dad that he would like both of us to be her models in one of her books! I jumped off my chair and run to give Miss Lydia a big hug.

I hope my first model experience will be both enjoyable or unforgettable. I’m looking forward to hearing you soon.
