12.Some people believe that greed and selfishness has become the basis of modern society,and we should return to the old traditions of family and community then we will have a better life.To what extent(程度) do you agree or disagree with the above opinion?
In this fast-paced world,many values are undergoing major changes.While people traditionally prioritize(優(yōu)先考慮) caring,sharing and generosity in life and work,modern people seem to be more self-absorbed and self-cocerned.
Modern people act selfishly to survive the fierce competition of life.They say that it is a jungle and selfishness go perfectly well with such ideas.In a company,employees do everything they can to get better pay and higher position,even at the cost of colleagues'benefits.We are in any way advocating any selfish conduct.It is just that people are pressured to act in a certain way due to outside influences.
In spite of common practice,it is hard to conclude that modern society is built on greed and selfishness,both of which are not newly invented vocabulary.In ancient times people also did greedy and selfish things though such behaviors were condemned(責難) then.But we cannot ignore the fact that people in the past lived a relatively more isolated life and faced less pressure compared with people in the modern society.
Are we happier to share with others and be generous to them?There is no fixed answer either.Some people take great pleasure helping and giving much to others while others feel happy doing the opposite.But I personally think that people should not be too selfish.Caring for others can actually encourage the development of a mutually beneficial(互利的) relationship.
In conclusion,modern people appear to be more self-centred than those in the past due to heavy outside pressure.However,we should encourage people to know the importance of being caring and generous and to build a mutually beneficial relationship with others.
Title:Are Modern People Becoming More Selfish?
Main comparisonsContexts
(86)Values are changing.In the past people put caring,sharing and generosity in the first (87)place
Nowadays,people seem to be more (88)concernedabout themselves.
(89)Behaviors are changing too.People in the past appeared to be modest and self-effacing(謙讓的).
People may strive to achieve their own (90)goals at the price of their coworkers now.

16.The widespread number of food scandals ( 丑聞) in China is making many people pause before they put their chopsticks in their mouth. They are wondering if the food they are eating is clean, healthy and nutritious or does it contain something harmful that will cause disease?
Most of the food we eat today is processed food( 加工食品).That means the foods we buy in stores and supermarkets, especially packaged foods, are prepared in factories.Chemicals are
added to the foods in these factories to make them look better, taste better and last longer on the shelf. The chemicals are supposed to be harmless and there are laws that regulate which chemicals can and cannot be used.Unfortunately, some producers do not obey the laws.
A producer of steamed buns (饅頭) in Zhejiang Province was recently discovered to be breaking the law.He was adding yellow dye (染色) and other banned (被禁止的) chemicals to the buns.He was also taking old buns and using th em to make new buns. Most of the buns were sold to schools and eaten by students…like you!
Why did he do it?Why did he break the law and endanger people's health? The answer is simple:he wanted to make more money. It was a moral failing, and this is at the heart of the food scandals in China.Too many people focus on making money and not on the effects their actions can have on others.

13.Fire ants(火蟻) are famous for their construction projects (as well as their burning bites).When they need to,colonies of these insects turn themselves into ladders,chains and walls.And when flood water rises,a colony can float to safety by making an unusual boat.The ants hold tightly to each other,forming a floating disk atop the water.The antraft may float for months seeking safe harbor.The ants on the bottom don't drown,and the ants on the top stay dry.Working together,the ants float to safety---even though a single ant alone in the water will struggle to survive.
"They have to stay together as a colony to survive."Nathan Mlot said.
Fire ants and water don't mix.The ant's hard outer shell,naturally repels water.A drop of water can sit on top of the ant like a backpack.When an ant does end up underwater,tiny hairs on its body can trap bubbles of air that give the bug a boost up (托起).
To investigate the science behind the antraft,the scientists placed hundreds or thousands of ants at a time in the water.A group of ants took about 100seconds,on average,to build a raft.The researchers repeated the experiment multiple times.Each time,the ants organized themselves the same way,creating a raft were flexible and strong,staying together even when the researchers pushed the rafts underwater.
The scientists then froze the rafts in liquid nitrogen and studied them under powerful microscopes to figure out how the ants kept everyone safe and the water out.
The team found that some ants used their jaws to bite other ants'legs.Other ants joined their legs together.Thanks to these tight bonds,say the scientists,the ants did a better job at keeping the water away than any one ant could do on its own.By working together,thousands of ants can stay alive in the face of a crisis like a flood by using their own bodies to build a boat.
