【題目】So long as teachers fail to distinguish betweenteaching and learning, they will continue to undertake to do for what only children can do forthemselves. Teaching children to read is not passing reading on to them. It is certainly not endless hours spent in activities about reading. Douglas insists that "reading cannot be taught directly andschools should stop trying to do the impossible."

Teaching and learning are two entirely different processes. They differ in kind and function. The function of teaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for childrento devise the most efficient system for teachingthemselves to read. Teaching is also a publicactivity: It can be seen and observed.

Learning to read involves all that each individualdoes not make sense of the world of printedlanguage. Almost all of it is private, for learningis an occupation of the mind, and that process isnot open to public scrutiny. If teacher and learner roles are not interchangeable, what then can be done through teaching will aid the child inknowledge. Smith has one principal rule for all teaching instructions. "Make learning to readeasy, which means making reading a meaningful, enjoyable and frequent experience for children."

When the roles of teacher and learner are seen forwhat they are, and when both teacher and learner fulfill them appropriately, then much of thepressure and feeling of failure for both iseliminated. Learning to read is made easier whenteachers create an environment where children are given the opportunity to solve the problem oflearning to read by reading.

1The problem with the reading course as mentionedin the first paragraph is that____.

A. it is one of the most difficult school courses

B. students spend endless hours in reading

【題目】In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social-progress and prosperity. Others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.

I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.

However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: "I may have lost, but it doesn't matter because I really didn't try." What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistake belief thatone's self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve (緩解) can we discover a new meaning in competition.

【1】What does this text mainly talk about?

A. Competition helps to set up self-respect.

B. People hold different opinions about competition.

C. Competition is harmful to personal quality development.

D. Failures are necessary experience in competition.

2】Some people favor competition because they think it ________.

A. pushes society forward

B. builds up a sense of pride

C. improves social abilities

D. develops people's relationship

3】The underlined phrase “the most vocal” in Paragraph 3 refers to those who ________.

A. try their best to win

B. highly value competition

C. are strongly against competition

D. mostly rely on others for success

4】Which viewpoint does the author agree to?

A. Self-worth relys on winning.

B. Competition leads to unfriendly relationship.

C. Winning should be a life-and-death matter.

D. Fear of failure should be removed in competition.

【題目】Two years ago, Dimas Aliprandi and Elton Plaster didn’t know of each others existence. Then they learned they had been switched at birth by mistake more than 20 years ago. The discovery didn’t bring bitterness. Rather, it led to the creation of a bigger family.

The chain of events started with Dimas, who was always wondering why he did not look like the four sisters he grew up with. He was 14 when his doubts grew after watching a TV news report on babies getting switched at birth because of mistakes at hospitalsHe wanted to do a DNA test, but it was too expensive for the family.

The search began at the Madre Regina Protmann Hospital where records were checked. The hospital searched its records and found Elton Plaster was born there on the same day.

The records led Dimas to the 35-acre farm where Piaster lived, with his parents, Nilza and Adelson, in the town of Santa Maria de Jetiba, about 30 miles from the Aliprandi home in Joao Neiva. After tests, the Plasters discovered that Elton was the biological son of the man and woman that Dimas had been calling Mom and Dad for 24 years. The book I'm reading of talks about afternoon tea in Britain. It is said to have started in the early 1800's. Have tea in the late afternoon provides a bridge between lunch and dinner, that may not be served until 8 o'clock at night. This custom soon becomes another meal of day. Interesting, it had a connection by the British porcelain (瓷器) industry. Tea in China was traditionally drank from cups without handles. When tea got popular in Britain, there was a crying need for good cup with handles to suit British habits. This made for the grow in the porcelain industry.
