Dear editor,

Yours,

Li Hua

【答案】Dear editor,

I'm a student in Senior Two. We have made a survey — "Whom do you turn to when in trouble?" Here are the results.

Most of the students will go to their classmates or friends when in trouble. They're almost of the same age, so they can talk with and understand each other easily. Some students will tell their teachers or parents about their troubles and ask for their help as the teachers and parents have rich experience and love them very much. They can be trusted by these students. Only a few students solve their problems all by themselves. They hate to talk with others and can' t get on well with others. They have few friends.

In my opinion, when in trouble we' d better ask our teachers, parents, friends or classmates for help.

Yours,

Li Hua

【題目】It can be hard to meet people from another culture. From the beginning, people may send the wrong signal(信號). Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship.

Different cultures emphasize (強調(diào))the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust. Even with people at work, it is necessary to spend a lot of time in “small talk”, usually over a glass of tea, before they do any job. In many European countries--like the UK or France—people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or cafes rather than at the office.

Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures. I once made a speech in Thailand. I had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion; instead there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. After getting to know their ways better, I realized that they thought I was talking too much. In my own culture, we express meaning mainly through words, but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary.

Even within Northern Europe, cultural differences can cause serious problems. Certainly, English and German cultures share similar values; however, Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly. We think that they are rude. In fact, this is just because one culture starts discussions and makes decisions more quickly.

People from different parts of the world have different values, and sometimes these values are quite against each other. However, if we can understand them better, a multicultural environment(多元文化環(huán)境)will offer a wonderful chance for us to learn from each other.

1In some countries, eating together at restaurants may make it easier for people to ________.

A.keep each other company B.share the same Culture

C.get to know each other D.develop closer relations

2The author mentions his experience in Thailand to show that _________.

A.even talk and silence can be culturally different

B.too many words are of no use

C.people from Thailand are quiet and shy by nature

D.the English prefer to make long speeches

3According to the text, how can people from different cultures understand each other better?

A.By sharing different ways of life.

B.By recognizing different values.

C.By accepting different habits.

D.By speaking each other’s languages.

4What would be the best title for the text?

A.Multicultural Environment.

B.How to Understand Each Other.

C.Cross-Cultural Differences.

D.How to Build Up a Relationship.

【題目】Food serves as a form of communication in two fundamental ways. Sharing bread or other foods is a common human tradition that can promote unity and trust. Food can also have a specific meaning, and play a significant role in a family or culture's celebrations or traditions. The foods we eat—and when and how we eat them—are often unique to a particular culture or may even differ between rural (農(nóng)村的) and urban areas within one country.

Sharing bread, whether during a special occasion (時刻) or at the family dinner table, is a common symbol of togetherness. Many cultures also celebrate birthdays and marriages with cakes that are cut and shared among the guests. Early forms of cake were simply a kind of bread, so this tradition hits its roots in the custom of sharing bread.

Food also plays an important role in many New Year celebrations. In the southern United States, pieces of corn bread represent blocks of gold for prosperity (興旺) in the New Year. In Greece, people share a special cake called vasilopita. A coin is put into the cake, which signifies (預示) success in the New Year for the person who receives it.

Many cultures have ceremonies to celebrate the birth of a child, and food can play a significant role. In China, when a baby is one month old, families name and welcome their child in a celebration that includes giving red-colored eggs to guests. In many cultures, round foods such as grapes, bread, and moon cakes are eaten at welcome celebrations to represent family unity.

Nutrition is necessary for life, so it is not surprising that food is such an important part of different cultures around the world.

A. indicates a lack of food

B. can help to develop unity

3The author explains the role of food in celebrations by______.

C. analyzing causes D. describing processes

4What is the passage mainly about?

A. The custom of sharing food.

C. The role of food in ceremonies.
