A fear of heights is a common feeling that is easy to understand. According to many psychologists, a fear of heights is one of the only two natural fears --- the other is the fear of loud noises. 【1】 If you are not afraid, you could walk too close to the edge and fall off. Having a fear of heights is good because it protects us from real danger.
【2】 They experience an intense fear even inside a safe environment such as a skyscraper, which is not an appropriate response and it is not helpful. 【3】 “As long as I can remember, I have had a powerful fear of heights. It can completely ruin a vacation. For example, when I was with friends in Paris, I became terrified while going up to the Eiffel Tower. I was almost crying and I felt embarrassed for the rest of the vacation,” Adams said.
Fortunately, having an irrational(不合理的) fear of heights can be corrected. 【4】 The most effective way seems to be getting the people to acknowledge their fears, for example, by encouraging them to go to the top of tall buildings, hike up steep mountains, or stand on a high bridge.
【5】 When faced with a threatening situation, taking slow, deep breaths can help slow the heart rate and increase the oxygen flowing to muscles to keep from tensing up. If possible, a few minutes of meditation(冥想) may be effective in relieving some tension.
It is important to remember that an inappropriate fear of heights is not unusual and can be treated.
A. Another way to overcome a fear of heights is to learn to control the physical symptoms.
B. However, some people have an irrational (非理性的) and unhealthy fear of heights.
C. One way to defeat your fear of heights is to do an activity that involves nothing but heights.
D. There are a number of ways this can be achieved.
E. John Adams, an English teacher, has an irrational fear of heights that makes his life very difficult.

試題分析:本文提出恐高是一種常見的可理解的心理,并分析了恐高的原因,提出了解決恐高心理的方法。
【1】F根據(jù)前文“the other is the fear of loud noises”另一種是怕巨大的噪音,可推知如果是在安靜的高處,就不會有那么強烈的恐高心理了。而F項中cliff(懸崖峭壁)就是一個相對安靜的高處。故選F。
【2】B 根據(jù)下文“They experience strong fears even inside a safe environment such as a tall building...”
【4】D根據(jù)上下文“...having an unreasonable fear of heights can be corrected...The most effective way seems to be getting the person to acknowledge their fear”可知,過度地恐高是可以被改正過來的,有許多方法可以做到這一點。最有效的方法就是讓人承認他們的恐懼。故選D。
【5】A根據(jù)下文“...taking slow, deep breaths can help slow the heart rate and increase the oxygen flow to muscles to keep from tensing up.”可知,另外一種方法就是控制體征,比如慢慢地深呼吸來降低心率,讓更多的氧氣流向肌肉來避免緊張。故選A。

【題目】Outdoor air pollution is an obvious danger because it’s hard to miss.Auto gases, industrial waste, city smog—everyone knows they’re a health hazard(危險) and a call for solutions is on everyone’s lips. But there’s another threat just as perilous— a hidden threat(威脅) we are usually unaware of.We’re speaking about the threat of indoor air pollution.
The dangers caused by indoor air pollution are too often underestimated(低估) and overlooked.According to a recent study, indoor air pollution can be many times higher than outdoor air pollution.A similar study by the Environmental Protection Agency shows that, in general, the air in our homes and offices is two to five times more polluted than outdoor air.
Scientific studies have found that indoor air pollution exacerbates(惡化) the symptoms of asthma(哮喘), and contributes to causing nausea(惡心), headaches and damage to the central nervous system.Evidence has even been found linking poor indoor air quality to certain cancers.Children who spend eighty percent of their time inside are particularly affected by indoor air pollution.
Cigarette smoke, chemical fertilizers(肥料), perfumes and clothing that has been dry-cleaned may contribute to indoor air pollution.Building materials—including paint and glue—are also contributors.
And homes aren’t the only indoor areas affected by this danger.Offices are affected too—sometimes more so—with their copy machines and printers, inks and processing solutions (顯影液)and so on.
Fortunately there are many ways to reduce indoor air pollution and improve indoor air quality in your home and office.A major first step would be the use of an air purifier(凈化器).

【題目】That woman carried a new blanket (毛毯) over her arm. Wordlessly, she gave it to me.
“Is it finished?” I asked.
She shook her head. “No. It is ready,” she replied. I handed her the money and took the blanket.
“It is beautiful, so skillfully woven (編織),”I said to my mother.“But what did she mean when she said it was not finished? How can it be ready if it is not finished?”
“I will tell you later,” my mother said, “but first I will take you to the Navajo(納瓦霍) village.”
We went down to the village. A group of young men were making sand pictures. We walked through the whole village, watching the different things the people were doing.
It was not until that evening that my mother finally explained the Navajo woman's words.
“Did you notice anything about the things the people were making?” my mother asked.
“What should I have noticed?” I looked at her and asked.
“Each thing the Navajo make has one small part that is not complete. The designs in their sand pictures are often not perfectly done, for example—the line of a circle may not quite close. If you look carefully at your blanket, you will probably find a stitch (一針) missing.”
I took the blanket off, but it looked as perfect as any design could be. Then suddenly, I noticed that sure enough a stitch was missing!
“But why do the Navajo intentionally leave some tiny part unfinished?” I asked.
“They believe that when anything is completed or finished, it means the end has come — it will not be perfect until then. Then too, with a circle, they believe that they must leave a pathway for the bad spirits to run away and the good spirits to come in. So, often, they do not make the line close.”
【1】The blanket the author received _____.
A. was poorly woven B. made her think a lot
C. cost her a lot of money D. was finished, but not ready

B. To make friends with some of the Navajo.
C. To have a deeper understanding of the Navajo.
D. To look for the woman who sold her the blanket.
【3】Which of the following may the Navajo believe?
A. A stitch in time is very important. B. Life only becomes perfect when you die.
C. He who makes no mistake is a perfect man. D. You must always try to make your life complete.
【4】What's the main idea of the text?
A. The Navajo are good at making things.
B. The Navajo are brave and hard-working.
C. A blanket tells a lot about the Navajo culture.
D. Skills are needed to do business with the Navajo.

Do you have to give them an arm and a leg? I hope not. Let’s listen to an American English conversation 【4】 (see) if we can find out what this means.

B: Yeah, I did. But I 【5】 (buy) it.

B: Not exactly, but , as a matter of fact, it cost the way more than I 【6】 (expect) it to be.
A: 【7】 did you pay for it?
B: Let me just tell you it cost an arm and a leg.
When you say in American English that something costs an arm and a leg, it actually means that 【8】 price is very, very high, much 【9】 (high)than we can expect. If you use this idiom in the United States, everyone will understand you. But this is a(n) 【10】 phrase, so don’t use it in a formal business setting.
