 on the rise 增長
in all walks  各行各業(yè)

be  harmful to 對…有害
make progress 取得進步
高分句型一:It is reported that the number of teenage smokers has been on the rise in recent years, which has caused great concern among people in ail walks or life.此句用了It is V-ed that…"據(jù)說"句型和which引導的非限制性定語從句.

解答 It is reported that the number of teenage smokers has been on the rise in recent years, which has caused great concern among people in all walks or life.(高分句型一)(青少年吸煙現(xiàn)象)
There are several reasons that account for this fact.First of all,it is easy for teenagers to get cigarettes.Cigarettes are available almost everywhere.Today's teens have more spare money, which comes from the improved living standard of their parents. They can buy what they want, including cigarettes.(高分句型二)Second, the teen years are the time when young people want to be more independent from their parents and form their own values. The enormous mental pressures of these years can make some people turn to smoking.(分析原因)

18.Almost anyone who has read a travel brochure about Africa has heard of a story-----that elephants can get drunk by eating the fermented (發(fā)酵) marula fruit rotting (腐爛) on the ground.Books have even been written to prove the truth of the phenomenon.
But a study published in the journal Physiological and Biochemical Zoology tells a very different story.
Steve Morris,a biologist at the University of Bristol in England and an author of the study,says there is nothing in the biology of either the African elephant or the marula fruit to support the stories.Morris says,"People just want to believe in drunken elephants."
The marula tree,a member of the same family as the mango (芒果),grows widely in Africa.Its sweet,yellow fruit is used for making jam,wine and beer."The first mistake of the drunken-elephant theory is that it's unlikely that an elephant would eat the fruit if it were rotten,"Morris says."Elephants eat the fruit right off the tree,not when it's rotten on the ground,"he explains.
Other experts add that if an elephant were to eat the fruit on the ground,it wouldn't wait for the fruit to ferment.Michelle Gadd,an African wildlife specialist,says that elephants and many other animals,including birds and monkeys,are too fond of marula fruit to let it rot.
If fermented fruit on the ground is out of the question,so is the concept that the fruit could ferment in the stomach of elephants,according to the study authors.Food takes between 12and 46hours to pass through an elephant's digestive(消化的) system,the authors point out,which is not enough for the fruit to ferment.
Supposing that  this  happened,it's still highly improbable that the food would produce enough alcohol to make an elephant drunk.Through calculations of body weight,elephant digestion rates,and other factors,the authors conclude that it would take about 1.9litres of alcohol to make an elephant drunk.
32.We can learn from the text thatD.
A.African elephants don't like to eat marula fruit at all

D.marula fruit can be made into food or drinks consumed by people
33.According to Paragraph 6,marula fruit probably takesC to ferment.
A.about 12hours
B.about 34hours
C.more than 46hours

18.Flappy Bird

Be careful what you wish for,especially if you want to invent something new.Recently,Dong Nguyen,the designer of the mobile game Flappy Bird,removed it from app stores.He said its success-it had been downloaded more than 50million times and was making him around£30,000from advertising each day-had ruined his simple life.On his Twitter account,he said:"I cannot take this anymore."OK,so regretting making Flappy Bird isn't quite the same as regretting making a gun,but Nguyen is just the latest inventor who wished he hadn't created a monster.
The Labradoodle

The labradoodle isn't a monster-it's attractive.But what's unnatural is the way crossbreed (雜交的)dogs have been sold since the labradoodle's inventor,Wally Conron,first created the dog in the 1980s."I've done a lot of damage,"he told the media."I've created a lot of problems.There are a lot of unhealthy and dropped dogs out there."Conron came up with the labradoodle when he was working for the Royal Guide Dog Association of Australia to provide a dog for a blind woman whose husband was easily affected by dog hair.What he didn't expect was that the labradoodle-and other types of such dogs,many of which have health problems-would become so popular.
The AK-47

Six months before his death in December 2013,Mikhail Kalashnikov,the designer of the gun,wrote to the head of the Russian Orthodox Church:"I almost cannot deal with my mental pain.If my gun killed people,does that mean that I,93years of age,the son of a poor farmer,am responsible for people's deaths,even if they were enemies?"
Electronic Tagging

The electronic tag was originally made in the 1960s as a way of tracking former prisoners'presence at school and work,and rewarding them for good behavior.Its inventors,Bob Gable and his brother Kirkland,were later shocked that the tag had become a form of control and punishment."It's not pleasant,"Kirkland Gable told the Guardian in 2010,"but I'm not in control of the universe.I have to realize there are some things out of my control."
Pepper Spray

After police sprayed(噴射) peaceful protesters with pepper spray at a University of California campus in 2011,one of the scientists who helped develop it in the 80s criticized its use."I have never seen such an inappropriate use of chemicals,"Kamran Loghman told The New York Times.
The Office Cubicle

In the late 60s,a new form of office was designed to give workers privacy and increase productivity by providing more work space.Instead,it became a way for companies to put employees into tighter spaces.These days,the cubicle is often connected with uniformity and soulless work.Its inventor,Bob Propst,said,in 1997,"the use of cubicles in modern corporations is crazy."

5.An increasing number of health, hunger, and sustainable (可持續(xù)的)agriculture groups today announced plans for Food Day-a nationwide campaign to change the way Americans eat and think about food. This nationwide campaign will encourage Americans around the United States to sponsor or participate in activities that encourage Americans to"eat real"and support healthy, affordable food grown in a sustainable, humane way.
Organizers expect Food Day inspires American people to hold tens of thousands of events in schools, college campuses, houses of worship and even in private homes aimed at fixing America's food system.A Food Day event could be as small as a parent organizing a vegetable identification contest at a kindergarten class-or as massive as a rally(集會)in a city park, with entertainment and healthy food.Health departments, city councils and other policy makers could use Food Day to launch campaigns, hold hearings,or otherwise address communities food problems.
The campaign will advocate progress toward five central goals:
•Reducing diet-related disease by promoting healthy foods. The American diet is too low in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and too high in fatty meat, soft drinks and salty packaged and restaurant foods-contributing to hundreds of thousands of premature deaths each year.
•Supporting sustainable farms and stopping subsidies to agribusiness.Billions of
federal dollars a year would be better spent helping environmentally conscious family
farmers than huge agribusiness operations.
•Expanding access to food and alleviating(緩解) hunger.Far too many Americans don't know where their next meal is coming from,or have access(方法) to fresh produce in their neighborhood.
•Reforming factory farms to protect animals and the environment.Farming of animals can and should be done without cruelty, and without degrading the quality of life.
