When we're learning a foreign language, making sense of what we hear is the first step toward fluency. It sounds obvious, but until recently, we didn't know much about how listening works. New research shows that effective listening involves more than simply hearing the words that float past our ears. Rather, it's an active process of analysing information and making meaning.
Studies of skilled language learners have identified specific listening strategies that lead to excellent comprehension. In addition to that benefit, research has shown that learners who adopt these strategies become better listeners.
So what are listening strategies? Skilled learners go into a listening activity with a sense of what they want to get out of it. They set a goal for their listening, and they make predictions about what the speaker will say. Before the talking begins, they review what they already know about the subject, and form an intention to “l(fā)isten out for”what's important. Once they begin listening, these learners maintain their focus; if their attention wanders, they bring it back to the words being spoken. They don't allow themselves to be thrown off by confusing or unfamiliar details. Instead, they take note of what they don't understand and later make inferences(推測(cè))about what those things might mean, based on other clues available to them: their previous knowledge of the subject, the identity of the speaker, and so on. All the while, skilled learners are evaluating what they're hearing and their own understanding of it. They're checking their inferences to see if they're correct.
Such strategies are all about thinking, and they produce a variety of benefits. Research indicates that such learners are better at analysing and storing new information, better at finding the best ways to practice what they have learned. Last year, for example, University of Ottawa researcher Larry Vandergrift published his study of 106 undergraduates who were learning French as a second language. Half of the students were taught in a traditional fashion, listening to and practicing texts spoken aloud. The other half, dealing with the same skill level and taught by the same teacher, were given clear instruction on how to listen. In the journal Language Learning, Vandergrift reported the results: The second group “significantly outperformed(勝過(guò))” the first one on a test of comprehension. In a 2006 study by researchers from Singapore, Chinese speakers who were learning English as a second language reported increased motivation and confidence after they were taught metacognitive strategies.
Though listening is often treated as a way to make others feel appreciated, it's also one of the most powerful tools we have to gain information and insight(洞察力).

Ecotourism is one of the fastest growing sectors in tourism. More and more of us are becoming concerned about the effects we are having on the destinations we choose, as well as the world around us. Some of us are choosing more green modes of transport to get there instead of flying, and some of us are choosing to visit greener destinations. India is one of the best places for ecotourism, and with the destinations below you can be sure that you’ll not only be protecting the earth, but giving something back to the area too.
Kerala, more commonly known as “God’s Own Country”, is a beautiful state on the southern tip of India. It’s a biologically diverse area, with many unique animal species, and almost 2,500 plant species in its tropical forests—that’s nearly a quarter of all India’s plant groups. In the past, though the forests in this area were much cleared, today they are well protected. There are plenty of wildlife reserves where you can see some of these unique animals.
With tourism developing in the area and money brought in, more attention can be given to protecting its plants and animals, ensuring that the people in the area have a better quality of life.
Arunachal Pradesh, situated on the most northern tip of India, is a resort for the more adventurous. With dry, desert heat in the summer and a snowfall best avoided in the winter, this area is less about greenery, and more about stunning desert landscapes. When visiting this amazing area, you'll be promoting locals earning income from their surroundings, encouraging them to make the most of them and preserve them, as well as gradually increasing their quality of life.
As a north Indian province, Ladakh supports much rare and even endangered plants and animals, which can be seen at Hemis High Altitude National Park. There are also many Tibetan monasteries, including the Hemis Monastery, to visit in the area.

[1]A new study has found evidence of aggressive behaVior in children who drink four or more servings of soft drinks every day.
[2]The mothers of 3,000 five-year-olds took part in the study. They were asked to keep a record of how many servings of soft drinks their children drank over a two-month period and keep records of how they behaved. The researchers found that 43 percent of the boys and girls drank at least one daily serving of soda.Four percent of the youngsters had four or more sodas to drink every day.
[3]Children who drank the most soda were more than two times likely to show signs of aggression.“For the children who consumed four or more  soft drinks per day,we see an association between aggressive behaviors, attention problems and withdrawn behaviors.”Shakira Suglia says. The aggressive behaviors included destroying possessions belonging to others, taking part in fights and physically attacking people.
[4]Shakira says the researchers identified the link after they considered the factors like the child’s age and sex. They also considered     ,such as whether the boys and girls were eating sweets or given fruit drinks on a normal day.In addition, the researchers examined parenting styles and other social conditions that might be taking place in the home.
[5]It is not quite clear why young children who drink a lot of soda have behavior pmblems. However,a substance oftell found in soft drinks is caffeine, which helps to make people feel energetic.Doctor Suglia suggests that caffeine could be causing the children to be more aggressive.

1 A flood is the overflow of a huge amount of water onto normally dry land. Flooding occurs when the overflowing water submerges (淹沒(méi)) land, and it causes a lot of problems. It is a cruel and violent expression of water.
2 Floods are often deadly and damaging. They kill lots of people, damage houses and crops, and cause extensive destruction. In broader terms, floods are of two types: natural floods and catastrophic floods. Natural floods are the floods that are caused naturally by the overflow of a huge volume of water, from rivers, lakes, oceans, or by heavy rain or downpours, hurricanes, and so on. Catastrophic floods are floods that are caused by some significant (重大的) or unexpected events, for instance, dam breakages.
3 Heavy rainfall is one of the major causes of floods. The level of water in rivers or lakes rises due to heavy rainfall. When the level of water rises above the river banks or dam, the water starts overflowing, which causes floods. Floods occur more in the regions that ____________.
4 Floods are also caused due to heavy snow melting. Global temperatures are rising due to global warming. The rising temperatures are making the snow caps melt faster. Continuous and fast melting snow raises the level of water in the oceans, which consequently raises the level of water in rivers, and when the level of water in rivers rises above the river banks, it causes floods.
5 Generally, floods occur more in low-lying areas or areas below sea level. One of the main reasons is that rivers flow slowly in these areas. The volume of water increases in low-lying areas. When the level of water rises in these regions, it causes floods.
6 Sometimes floods are caused due to poor dams that cannot hold great volume of water. Therefore, there are always different causes of floods. However, floods caused by humans can be avoided. Humans should let the nature go its own way.

Speaking comes to most people as naturally as breathing. On many occasions our words are expressed without conscious thought; in fact we rarely stop and think about what we are saying. Thousands of words pour out of our mouths each day as our thoughts, opinions, judgments and beliefs are freely conveyed. Often, however, we are unconscious of the positive or negative effect which these words have on ourselves and the people around us.
Words have tremendous power. Words give out energy and a message which creates a reaction in others. Everything you say produces an effect in the world. Whatever you say to someone else will produce some kind of an effect in that person. We are constantly creating something, either positive or negative with our words.
An important key to success in life is to understand the power of words. A word is a permanent thought. Our thoughts do have a great effect on us even though they are internal. What we think affects the way we live our life, and affects our emotions, our attitudes and our behaviour. A thought spoken, however, has even more power. It can never be taken back ; it is out of our mouth and will have an effect. Our words have even more power than our thoughts because they not only affect ourselves, but the people and the world around us.
Successful people take control of their words, rather than letting their words control them. They are more conscious of their thoughts and words and the power they produce. Successful people understand that they need to speak positively rather than negatively in order to see success. Successful people are characterized by the words that they speak. They know the importance of speaking words that will build self-esteem and confidence, build relationships and build possibilities. They speak words of affirmation, encouragement, love, acceptance and appreciation.

If you’re looking for a new pet, don’t even think about Komodo dragons, which are the world’s largest lizards and can grow to be 10 feet long and weigh more than 300 pounds. Komodo dragons run fast and eat almost any kind of meat, including dead or live animals, other Komodo dragons and people. “ These things are powerful killing machines,” says Bryan Fry, a biologist.
If those reasons aren’t good enough, consider the bite of a Komodo dragon. According to a new study, it may kill prey like snakes by injecting venom. This chemical, according to Fry and his team of scientists at the University of Melbourne in Australia, can cause shock in the unlucky victim. A person or animal goes into shock when the body cannot offer enough blood to the organs to keep functioning. As a result, the body starts to shut down.
Scientists have only recently begun to understand why a Komodo dragon is so deadly. Some people used to believe that a Komodo dragon’s bite contained bacteria from the mouth that would cause a severe infection in the victim’s blood. The infection would finally kill the animal. Fry says that after being bitten by a Komodo dragon, animals usually die quickly.
After more studies, Fry and his team found that the Komodo dragon venom contained some of the same ingredients as snake venom. These ingredients thin the bolld and cause blood vessels to become larger. To test the venom, the scientists injected rats with it and observed that the rats became still.
Fry’s work show that Komodo dragons kill their prey with venom, and not by bacteria—and gives us another reason why we should avoid coming across them. That is easy to do, since they live only on a few islands in the tropical country of Indonesia.
(no more than 10 words)
小題1:The underlined word “ venom” in Paragraph 2 probably means _________________.
小題2:Why does a victim get into shock after being injected?
小題3:According to Fry and his team, how do the ingredients in Komodo dragons’ venom affect their victims?
小題4:“If you’re looking for a new pet, don’t even think about Komodo dragons.” What does the author mean by saying that?

Direction: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.
We know that in many cases things aren’t personal, but we tend to think that things are about us, whether good or bad. For instance, when your friends go on a night out without inviting you, you probably get upset and end up shouting at them. If  you tend to take things so personally, then this will be upsetting you and damaging your self-respect--- and it might also be putting unnecessary stress on your relationships. So it’s important for us to take some steps to stop taking things so personally.
Firstly, assess the situation more logically. Don’t give in to your immediate emotional reaction---rather take a step back and think about what has happened. For instance, if you’re upset because weren’t invited to an event, then think it like this: Was it an event that they maybe thought you wouldn’t be interested in? Or was it an event that perhaps they didn’t think you could make? When you step back and stop being egocentric(以自我為中心), then you’ll easily see many other possible reasons for your not being invited.
Also don’t blame yourself. Sometimes, the person does mean to be critical and rude. However, you can view this as their problem and not as something you’ve done wrong. If someone you know is regularly acting badly towards you, it may even be that they feel threatened by you because they’re impressed by you--- actually that’s a compliments(褒揚(yáng))in a way.
Focusing on the positive is also important. Our friends say countless nice things about us on an average day and this helps to slowly develop our self-confidence. If someone has given us 20 compliment and one insult, then why should this damage our self-confidence? If you’re feeling low, try to think back to the positive things that have been said to you.

It was at least two months before Christmas when nine-year-old Almie Rose told her father and me that she wanted a new bicycle.
As Christmas drew nearer, her dream for a bicycle seemed to fade(逐漸消失), for she didn’t mention it again. We bought some beautiful story books for her and thought she would be happy to see them. However, on December 24, she said that she wanted a bike more than anything else.
It was just too late. We were busy with Christmas dinner and parking presents till midnight. So there was no time to buy a bicycle for our little girl. Thinking she would feel unhappy with the gift we gave her, we felt sad. We didn’t know what to do.
Suddenly my husband had a good idea. “ What if I make a little bicycle out of clay(泥) and write a note to tell her that she could trade the clay model in for a real bike?” My husband asked. I agreed. So he spent the next four hours patiently working with clay to make a tiny bike.
On Christmas morning, we were excited for Almie to open the little box with the beautiful red and white clay bike and the note. Finally, she opened it and read the note aloud.
Then she asked, “Does this mean that I can trade in this bike that Daddy made me for a real one?” Smiling, I said, “Yes.”
Almie had tears in her eyes when she replied, “I will never trade in this beautiful bicycle that Daddy made for me. I’d rather keep this than get a real bike.” Hearing this, I gave her a big hug.(擁抱).
