A student is given three toys by his teacher and is asked to find out the differences. All the three toys seem to be the same in shape, size and material. After careful observation, the student finds out holes in the toys. The first toy has holes in the ears. The second toy has holes in one ear and the mouth. And the third toy has only one hole in one ear.
Then the student puts a needle in the ear hole of the first toy. The needle comes out from the other ear. When the needle is put in the second toy’s ear it comes out of the mouth. And when the needle is put in the third toy’s ear, it does not come out.
The first toy means those people around you who make you think that they are listening to you and caring for you. But they just pretend to do so. After listening, as the needle comes out from the other ear, the things you said to them are gone. So be careful while you are speaking to this type of person around you, who does not care for you. The second toy means those people who listen to you and make you think that they care for you. But as the needle comes out from its mouth, these people will use your things and the words you tell them against you by telling them to others for their own purpose.
For the third toy, the needle does not come out from it. These kinds of people will keep the trust you have in them. They are the ones you can depend on.

It was such an extremely freezing day that I decided to get a cup of hot drinking first after work. As my colleague, Ricky, and I were making our way to a coffee shop, I noticed an old gentleman rather poorly dressed sitting on a bench nearby. Obviously he was frozen, seemingly one of the homeless or someone like that.
We joined the line and waited to be served. Ricky handed the server a twenty-dollar bill, ordered three cups of hot coffee, and gestured the sever to give one to the old gentleman outside on the bench as a favour. The server looked at Ricky, a little perplexed, without full comprehension of the request. Afterwards, there was a wonderful exchange between the server and the old man in need of some attention. I only wished I had taken a photo of the smiles on the both faces.
As I was thinking about this event later on, I wondered to myself why Ricky didn’t perform this act of kindness himself. I suspect that deep down in his heart he was hoping that this act of kindness might inspire others to do something for this old man as well. Absolutely beautiful!
There are many ways of thinking when we met someone as the old man in need of kindness and attention. Perhaps he needs a little helping hand and thanks God for my colleague who inspired the others to goodness as well. Oh, by the way, the last words Ricky told the server was,
“There go I, but for the Grace of God.”
1.What was the author’s impression of the old gentleman?
A. He was a greedy man.
B. He took on a sign of poor manners.
C. He was in poor health.
D. He needed some kind of human care.
2.The underlined word “perplexed” in the second paragraph probably means “ ”.
A. annoyed B. confused
C. embarrassed D. determined
3.Why didn’t Ricky give the favour to the old gentleman himself?
A. He didn’t know the old gentleman.
B. He was too shy to speak to strangers.
C. He tried to influence others to be kind.
D. He feared the old man would refuse his help.
4.What the author really thinks absolutely beautiful is that .
A. an act of kindness could go widespread
B. a cup of coffee could warm the old man
C. the server was very kind to customers
D. Ricky had created a good impression

The smell of fresh air is becoming something of a distant memory, thanks to our increasing use of fragrance (香氣). From air fresheners to scented (有香味的) candles, we live in a world of scent.
Recent figures show seven in ten people use air fresheners or scented candles to keep our homes smelling sweet. Yet recent records suggest that perfumed products could affect our health, causing problems including allergies (過敏), headaches and asthma (哮喘) .
One leading expert believes nearly a third of people suffer health effects from being exposed to scents. A major problem is so-called “contact” allergy—where perfumes and scented products cause eczema (濕疹) when they come into contact with the skin. About one in 20 is thought to be affected by fragrance allergy.
“Often it may not be immediately obvious that you have developed a fragrance allergy,” says Dr. Baron. “You don’t react immediately. Gradually, as you are exposed more and more, the body increases its reaction, until it becomes noticeable to you.”
People with pre-existing eczema are particularly vulnerable (易受影響). “The eczema worsens in areas in contact with perfumes,” says Dr. Baron. “But even those without allergies can be at risk of fragrance allergy.” You can become suddenly allergic to perfumes and personal care products that you have been using for years. “Even if you know which fragrance causes a problem, it can be difficult to avoid, as most personal care products –soap, shampoo, sun cream and washing powder—contain fragrances,” says Dr. Baron.
And strong scents can also cause headaches. Fragrances activate the nose’s nerve cells, stimulating the nerve system associated with head pain. To minimize risk, sufferers are advised to minimize the contact.
“Fragrance suggests cleanliness – yet people are smelling a potentially dangerous chemical mixture,” says Anne Steinemann, professor of the University of Washington. “We often use them to mask one problem – as with air fresheners – but create a greater one – adding poisonous chemicals to the air.”
1.What is the text mainly about?
A. The world trend of using fragrance.
B. The benefits of using non-fragranced products.
C. The health problems caused by fragrance.
D. The ways of removing allergy.
2.Which of the following questions does the text NOT answer?
A. Which products contain fragrance?
B. What’s the influence of fragrance in the air?
C. What are the air fresheners made up of?
D. How are headaches caused by fragrance?
3.According to Dr. Baron, .
A. our bodies have an immediate reaction to fragrance.
B. seven in ten have suffered fragrance allergy.
C. fragrance can affect people who don’t have allergy.
D. people can avoid contacting with fragrance easily.
4.The following paragraph might discuss .
A. the asthma caused by strong scents.
B. people’s efforts to protect fresh air.
C. the methods of curing eczema.
D. the bad effects of air fresheners.

I’ve been living in China for a while — long enough to observe the long-term deterioration (退化)of my own native language abilities, as well as those of my fellow English speakers. This deterioration can take different forms, one of which is the non-standard usage of the words. Its source is, specifically, Chinese culture, and its target is native English speakers. Below I give some of the common ways that the Chinese environment strikes down the native speaker’s linguistic competence (語言能力) .
Net bar: In Chinese, they’re called “網(wǎng)吧”, This is fine. We generally call them “Internet café” in English. The Chinese seem to think that “網(wǎng)吧” should be translated as “net bar” in English, and many careless foreigners have even been misled by this idea.
Name card: In the English-speaking world, business people have lots of business meetings to discuss business. On these occasions, business people exchange specially printed pieces of paper known as business cards. In China everyone calls them “name cards”, because in Chinese they are called “名片” and “name card” is a more direct translation .
Bean curd. It’s called “tofu,” OK! This English word comes from Chinese. I know all dictionaries sold in China will tell you “豆腐” is “bean curd” in English and that may represent the two characters nicely, but “bean curd” is more a definition than a comfortable translation. And yet some foreigners start saying “bean curd” rather than tofu. Deplorable (可悲的)!
I think you see the pattern. The normal native way of saying something is replaced by a more unnatural way of saying it using other English words.
If you’ve been living in China for a while and find yourself using all of these, you might be on dangerous ground. You’re going to start making a fool of yourself back home. Look out! Resist Chinglish attempts at destroying your own command of your mother tongue!
1.Which of the following expressions is more native?
A.Bean curd B.Tofu C.Name card D.Net bar
2.How does the writer support his main idea?
A.By comparison B.By examples
C.By reasoning D.By refutation (反駁)
3.What is the main cause of the non-standard usage of the words by native English speakers?
A.Chinese culture
B.Chinese tradition
C.English flexibility(靈活性)
D.Chinese polluted environment
4.The mentioned Chinglish words are created in the way ________.
A.that is generally accepted by native English speakers
B.that is often misunderstood by native English speakers
C.that sounds reasonable to native English speakers
D.that sounds natural to some Chinese

On a cold winter day in Denver, I waited in line to see my hero, Jack Canfield, the co-author of the best-selling Chicken Soup for the Soul series and the author of The Success Principles. What Jack had become was a version of what I wanted to be.
During his talk, Jack 1 his wallet, pulled out a hundred-dollar bill, and said, "Who wants this?"
Hnads shot up in the audience; people leaned forward to see whom Jack would choose. But I
ran up the stairs to the stage and grabbed the bill from his hand. He turned to me and said, “Yes, that’s it! Instead of waiting around for opportunities, simply take the initiative and create what we want!”
After this week, I asked for his personal e-mail address and sent him e-mail sharing my views and dreams. He kindly e-mailed back simple encouragement such as “Keep thinking and playing bigger; it’s much more fun that way. Love, Jack.” Then I got occupied with other things in life and I stopped e-mail Jack.
A year later, my dream gradually faded. I had this idea if I got back in touch with Jack. I e-mailed him again and again but got no response.
