When Frida Kahlo’s paintings were on show in London,a poet described her paintings as “a ribbon(絲帶) around a bomb”.Such comments seem to suggest Kahlo had a big influence on the art world of her time.Sadly, she is actually a_much_bigger_name today than she was during her time.
Born in 1907 in a village near Mexico City,Kahlo suffered from polio(小兒麻痹癥) at the age of seven. Her spine(脊柱) became bent as she grew older. Then,in 1925,her back was broken in several places in a schoolbus accident.Throughout the rest of her life, the artist had many operations, but nothing was able to cure the terrible pain in her back. However, the accident had an unexpected side effect. While lying in her bed recovering,Kahlo taught herself to paint.
In 1929,she got married to Diego Rivera, another famous Mexican artist.Rivera’s strong influence on Kahlo’s style can be seen in her early works, but her later works from the 1940s,known today as her best works, show less influence from her husband.
Unfortunately, her works did not attract much attention in the 1930s and 1940s,even in her home country. Her first onewoman show in Mexico was not held until 1953.For more than a decade after her death in 1954,Kahlo’s works remained largely unnoticed by the world, but in the 1970s her works began to gain international fame at last.            (2012·安徽,C)

How often do you let other people’s nonsense change your mood? Do you let a bad driver, impolite waiter, rude boss,or an insensitive employee      your day?
One day I was in a taxi and we headed    __ the airport. We were driving in the       lane when suddenly a black car drove out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, slide sideways, and at the very last moment our car stopped and narrowly      the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car looked around and started      at us.
My taxi driver just      and waved at the guy. And I mean he was really     . So I asked, “Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!” This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call “The Law of the Garbage Truck”.
He    that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of    ,full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage      up,they need a place to dump (倒) it and sometimesthey’ll dump it on     . Don’t take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on.
Believe me. You’ll be more   . Don’t take their garbage and      it to other people at work,at home,or on the streets, Life’s too short to wake up in the morning with     . The mark of your success is how quickly you can refocus on what’s      in your life. Roy Baumeister,a psychology researcher from Florida State University, found in his extensive research that you      bad things more often than good things in your life. You store the bad memories rather easily, and you      them more frequently.
So...Love the people who treat you right. Ignore the ones who don’t. Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you      it!
When you follow “The Law of the Garbage Truck”,you take back control of your life. You make room for the good by      go of the bad. Have a Garbage Free Day!Have a marvelous,garbage-free day!The seeds you plant today      the harvest you reap tomorrow.

A huge shire horse in Australia has been declared the biggest horse in the world by its owner , beating the current Guinness World Record(吉尼斯記錄) by several inches .
The huge five-year-old , from Pakenham , S. E Australia , measures an amazing 20.1 hands , or 2.057m tall . He weighs over 1.3 tons ( 1,300kg) — about the same as a small car — and is still growing . His owner , horse trainer Jane Greenman , 47 , says the only time the horse runs is when there is food on offer . “ He eats an unbelievable amount . I would hate to run a team of eight horses his size—it would send you broke . ” she says .
The massive horse , whose name is Noddy , was born in Australia with its parents imported from England . Noddy’s grandfather , Ladbrooke Edward (UK) was the world’s tallest horse during the 1980’s .But Jane had no idea that the horse she raised from the age of six months would grow this big . Although she says that she is not interested in the Guiness Book of World Records , nevertheless Jane has carried out her own research and is sure that Noddy comes top . “ The nearest is a horse in Texas , at 20 hands ,” says Jane . “ Noddy is already an inch taller than that . The frightening thing is he still hasn’t finished—shire horses aren’t fully grown until they’re about six or seven .”
Jane has said that Noddy could be sold overseas , possibly even fetching a record price to match his height . She is unwilling to sell , but to fund the high cost of keeping him she needs to put him to work . “ He needs a job . It’s very hard to find jobs for such a big horse in Australia . Once, long ago, there was a man who traveled from Persia to India on foot. He had       been to India before. When he arrived at a village, he happened upon a fruit stand. In that village, fruit was quite       because of the lack of water. The man was looking around at the fruits when he      a big basket of some very red, very long fruit. It was the cheapest fruit in the shop, not expensive at all.
the man walked up to the counter (柜臺) and asked: “How       per kilo?” And the shopkeeper said: “Two rupees.” Two rupees in India is      . The man thought to himself: “What a       !” So he bought a whole kilogram of the fruit and began to       it. But after he tried a few pieces, he screamed: “Oh, my God!” His eyes watered, his mouth burned, and his face turned        . He coughed and choked and gasped for breath.
But despite his       , he continued to stuff the fruits into his mouth! Onlookers       their heads and laughed. One man yelled: “You’re       , man! Those are chilies! People use them as a condiment (佐料). You don’t just eat them by the handful like that; they’re not fruit!” But the man replied: “No, I can’t       ! I paid money for them, and now I’ll eat them. It’s my money!”
You probably think this man was pretty      , right? Nevertheless, I bet you or someone you know makes the same       on a daily basis. People invest money, time and effort into a relationship, business or job. Even when experience tells them that it’s not      , and they know there’s little hope of improvement, they still        because they don’t want to waste the previous investment. But this is       . It is no different than being the man who continued eating chilies because he didn’t want to waste the money he’d paid for them.
Losing something is difficult, but it is important to        the loss and move on.     you’ll just keep burning your mouth on hot chilies.

When I was fifteen, I announced to my English class that I was going to write my own books. Half the students smiled      , and even worse, the rest nearly fell out of their chairs laughing. “Don’t be        . Only geniuses can become writers.” the English teacher said, “And you are getting a D this term.” I was so      that I burst into tears. That night I wrote a short       poem about broken dreams and mailed it to the newspaper. To my     , they published it and sent me two dollars. I was a published and paid writer. I showed my teacher and fellow students. They laughed, “Just plain dumb luck,” the teacher said. I tasted      ; I’d sold the first thing I’d ever written. That was more than any of them had done and if it was just dumb luck, that was fine with me.
During the next two years, I sold dozens of poems and letters. By the time I graduated from high school, I had scrapbooks (剪貼簿)      with my published works. I never      my writing to my teachers, friends or my family again  because they were dream        .
I had four children at the time. While the children slept, I typed on my ancient typewriter. I wrote what I felt. It took nine months. I chose a      and mailed it. A month later I received a contract, an advance on payments, and a request to start      another book. Crying Wind, which became a best seller, was translated into fifteen languages and sold worldwide. My first book also became required       in native American schools in Canada.
In the      year I ever had as a writer I earned two dollars. In my best year I earned 36,000 dollars. People ask what college I      , what degrees I have and what qualifications I have to be a writer. The answer is: “None.” I just write. I’m not a genius. I use an electric typewriter that I paid a hundred and twenty nine dollars for six years ago. I do all the housework and fit my writing in a few minutes here and there. I’ve written eight books. To all those who dream of writing, I’m shouting at you: “Yes, you can. Don’t listen to them.” I don’t write right but I’ve succeeded. Writing is        ; it’s fun and anyone can do it. Of course, a little dumb luck doesn’t hurt.
