Strange things were happening in the  51 in northeast Hebei Province. For three days the   52  in the village wells rose and fell. Farmers noticed that the well walls had deep  53  in them. A smelly gas came out of the cracks. In the farmyards, the chickens and even the pigs were too nervous to eat. Mice ran out of the fields looking for places to hide. Fish jumped out of ponds. People saw bright lights in the sky. The sound of planes could be heard outside Tangshan even when no  54  were in the sky. In the city, the water pipes in some buildings cracked and burst. But the one million people of the city, who thought little of these events, went to bed  55  that night.
At 3:42 am everything began to  56 . It seemed that the world was at an end! Eleven kilometers directly below the city the greatest earthquake of the 20th century  57 . It was heard in Beijing, which is one hundred kilometers away. One-third of the nation felt it. A huge crack that was eight kilometers long and thirty meters   58  cut across houses, roads and canals. Steam burst from holes in the ground. Hard hills of rock became rivers of dirt. In fifteen   59  seconds a large city lay in ruins. Two-thirds of the people died or were injured during the   60 . Thousands of families were killed and many children were left without parents. The   61  of people who were killed or injured reached more than 400,000.
But how could the   62  believe it was natural? Everywhere they looked nearly everything was destroyed. All of the city’s hospitals, 75% of its factories and buildings and 90% of its homes were gone. Bricks covered the ground like red autumn leaves. No wind, however, could blow them away. Two dams fell and most of the bridges also fell or were not safe for   63 . The railway tracks were now useless pieces of   64 . Tens of thousands of cows would never give   65  again. Half a million pigs and millions of chickens had died. Sand now filled the wells instead of water. People were   66 . Then, later that afternoon, another big quake shook Tangshan. Some of the rescue workers and doctors were trapped under the ruins. More buildings fell down. Water, food, and electricity were   67  to get. People began to wonder how long the disaster would last.
All hope was not lost. The army sent 150,000   68  to Tangshan to help the rescue workers. Hundreds of thousands of people were   69 . The army organized teams to dig out those who were trapped and to bury the dead. To the north of the city, most of the 10.000 miners were rescued from the coalmines. Workers built shelters for survivors whose homes had been destroyed. Fresh water was taken to the city by train, truck and plane. Slowly, the city began to   70  again.

If there is one thing I am sure about, it is that in a hundred years from now we will still be reading newspapers. It is not that newspapers are a necessity. Even now some people get most of their news from television or radio. Many buy a paper only on Saturday or Sunday. But for most people reading a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation.
The nature of what is news may change. What basically makes news is what affects our lives- the big political stories, the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the same. I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though. It’s already happening in areas that may directly affect our lives, like genetic(基因) engineering. In the future, I think there will be more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do --- as we develop a better understanding of how the brain operates and what our feelings really are.
It’s quite possible that in the next century newspapers will be transmitted(傳送) electronically from Fleet Street and printed out in our own home. In fact, I am pretty sure that it will happen in the future. You will probably be able to choose from a menu, making up your own newspaper by picking out the things you want to read- sports and international news, etc.
I think people have got it wrong when they talk about competition between the different media(煤體). They actually feed off each other. Some people once foresaw that television would kill off newspapers, but that hasn’t happened. What is read on the printed page lasts longer than pictures on a screen or sound lost in the air. And as for the Internet, it is never really pleasant to read something just on a screen.

小題3:What will probably be on in the newspaper made by yourself?
A.Sports and international news.B.A menu of important news

A.newspapers will win the competition among the different media
B.newspapers will stay with us together with other media

A few months ago I was at a bus stop in town in the evening. The bus came on time and I took the window seat. The bus route was by the seashore and I was enjoying the breeze (微風(fēng)) while watching the sea waves. After a few minutes the bus made its next stop. A young boy and a girl got on. They were standing on my left when the bus pulled off. I looked at them curiously and realized that all the window seats were occupied (占據(jù)). They could sit but not together. Suddenly a different wave passed through my body and my inner mind gave me the advice to get up. I got up and offered them my seat. The young lady smiled kindly and said thanks. I occupied another seat and we parted our ways. I don’t remember whether I got off the bus before them or not.
Months passed by. Suddenly one day while I was standing at the same bus stop waiting some time for the bus to arrive I heard a voice.
“Excuse me, Uncle.” I looked in the direction of the voice. It was a beautiful young lady.
Puzzled, I said, “I do not recognize you.”
She said, “Do you remember you gave us your window seat?”
Puzzled, I said, “Maybe, but what is so great in that?”
She said, “If you had not given your seat that day, perhaps I would have not sat with my friend. By sitting together it helped us bridge a misunderstanding that had been between us forever. Do you know we are getting married next month?”
“Good! God bless both of you,” I replied.
The young lady again said thank you and went on her journey. I realized the importance of giving that day.
小題1: Why were the young boy and the girl standing on the bus?
A.Because they wanted to enjoy the sea view.

It is only during the last few years that man has generally realized that in the world of nature a balance exists between all forms of life. No living thing can exist by itself: it is a part of a system (體系) in which all forms of life are joined together. If we change one part of the natural order, this will in its turn almost certainly bring about changes in some other part.
The cutting down of forests reduces the supply of oxygen. The killing of weeds and insects by chemicals leads to the wide spread poisoning of animals and birds. The throwing of waste products into the ocean harm to life in the sea, while waste gases change the chemical balance of the atmosphere.
And so we could go on, adding more examples, until in despair (絕望) we might feel like giving up the struggle to control and keep within limits these harmful human activities. Man is very clever at changing the world around him to satisfy his immediate needs, but not so clever at looking far ahead, or at thinking about what the future results of his action might be.
小題1:The first paragraph mainly tells us that __________.
A.everything in nature can’t exist without the help of human beings
B.no living thing can exist naturally
C.a(chǎn)ll living things in nature depend on each other
D.man has well known the importance of the balance for a long time
小題2:The examples given in the second paragraph are used to prove that __________.
A.it is very important to protect forests
B.there are some living things which can exist all by themselves without change
C.a(chǎn)ll forms of life belong to a system in which all the part can be changed for one another
D.we cannot change one form of life or matter without disturbing (擾亂) the balance of nature
小題3:In the second paragraph the underlined word “atmosphere” means __________.
A.the production of chemical factoriesB.the gas in the outer space
C.the mixture of gases that surrounds the earthD.the health of the human body
小題4:The third paragraph suggests that __________.
A.man shouldn’t think only about his immediate needs without enough thought on the future results
B.man is very clever in planning his distant future
C.man often feels that he has to give up in despair
D.man is always anxious to control and keep his actives within limits
