It is only during the last few years that man has generally realized that in the world of nature a balance exists between all forms of life. No living thing can exist by itself: it is a part of a system (體系) in which all forms of life are joined together. If we change one part of the natural order, this will in its turn almost certainly bring about changes in some other part.
The cutting down of forests reduces the supply of oxygen. The killing of weeds and insects by chemicals leads to the wide spread poisoning of animals and birds. The throwing of waste products into the ocean harm to life in the sea, while waste gases change the chemical balance of the atmosphere.
And so we could go on, adding more examples, until in despair (絕望) we might feel like giving up the struggle to control and keep within limits these harmful human activities. Man is very clever at changing the world around him to satisfy his immediate needs, but not so clever at looking far ahead, or at thinking about what the future results of his action might be.

When I first entered university, my aunt, who is an English professor, gave me a new English dictionary. I was   1  to see that it was an English English dictionary, also known as a monolingual(單語的) dictionary.   2  it was a dictionary intended for non-native learners, none of my classmates had one and, to be honest, I found it extremely  3  to use at first. I would look up words in the dictionary and still not fully understand the meaning. I was used to the   4  bilingual(雙語的)dictionaries, in which the words are    5  both in English and Chinese. I really wondered why my aunt   6  to make things so difficult for me. Now, after studying English at university for three years, I   7 that monolingual dictionaries are  8 in learning a foreign language.
As I found out, there is in fact often no perfect equivalence(對應) between two  9  in two language. My aunt even goes so far as to  10 that a Chinese “equivalent” can never give you the   11 meaning of a word in English! Therefore, she insisted that I read the definition(定義) of a word in a monolingual dictionary when I wanted to get a better understanding of its meaning. 12  , I have come to see what she meant.
Using a monolingual dictionary for learners has helped me in another important way. This dictionary uses a(n)   13  number of words, around 2, 000, in its definitions. When I read these definitions, I am  14 exposed to the basic words and learn how they are used to explain objects and ideas.  15 this, I can express myself more easily in English.

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的A、B、C和D項中,選出最佳選項,并在答題卡上將該項涂黑。
Michael, a typical American, stays home on workdays. He plugs into his personal computer terminal in order to connect with the office. After work, he puts on his headphones, watches a movie on his home video recorder, or plays baseball on the computer. On many days, Michael doesn’t talk to any other human beings, and he doesn’t see any people except the ones on television. Michael is imaginary, but his life style is very possible. The inventions of modern technology seem to be cutting us off from contact with our fellow human beings.
The world of business is one area in which technology is isolating us. Experts say, for example, that many people will soon be able to work at home. With access to a large central computer, employees such as office clerks, insurance agents, and accountants could do their jobs at display terminals in their own homes. They would never have to actually see the people they’re dealing with. In addition, the way employees are paid will change. Workers’ salaries will be automatically paid into their
bank accounts, making paper checks unnecessary. No workers will stand in line to receive their pay or cash their check. Personal banking will change, too. Customers will deal with machines to put in or take out money from their accounts. Another area that technology is changing is entertainment. Music, for instance, was once a group experience. People listened to music at concert halls or in small social gatherings. For many people now, however, music is an individual experience. Walking along the street or sitting in their living rooms, they wear headphones to build a wall of music around them. Movie entertainment is changing, too. Movies used to be social events. Now fewer people are going out to see a movie. Many more are choosing to wait for a film to appear on television or are borrowing videotapes to watch at home. Instead of laughing with others, viewers watch movies in their own living rooms.
小題1:After work, Michael likes to ________.
A.listen to music at the concert hall
B.watch a movie in his living room
C.run a program on his computer in his office
D.play baseball with his workmates
小題2:Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A.Clerks will be able to work at home.
B.One can play baseball on the computer.
C.One can listen to music without disturbing others.
D.One can borrow books from libraries at home.
小題3:The sentence “Michael is imaginary, but his lifestyle is very possible” means ________.
A.Michael is a person full of imagination and he can make his dreams come true
B.Michael is not a real person but the lifestyle does exist
C.Michael has ambitions but he can’t make his dreams come true
D.Michael is a person full of imagination and his lifestyle is common nowadays
小題4:What will the author most probably discuss after the last paragraph?
A.Games and sports.B.Personal banking.
C.Music and films.D.International business.

Time magazine named Russian President Vladimir Putin its  "Person of the Year" for 2007 on Wednesday, saying he had returned his country from chaos(混亂)to "the table of world power" though at a cost of democratic principles.
He doesn't care about civil liberties; he doesn't care about free speech; he cares about stability. But Putin, 55, is enormously popular in Russia, presiding over a resurgent economy based on income from oil and natural gas. On the other hand, stability is what Russia needed and that's why Russians adore(愛戴)him.
Time magazine said on its Web site that Putin, the son of a factory worker had led Russia with persistence, a sharp vision and a sense that he showed the spirit of "Mother Russia".

"Putin has put his country back on the map.  And he intends to redraw it himself,"Time said. "He will continue to lead his country as its prime minister and attempt to transform it into a new kind of nation, beholden to neither East nor West."
Time said the person of the year distinction, which it has awarded since 1927, is not an endorsement(支持)or a popularity prize but a recognition of the individuals and forces that shape the world. "At significant cost of, the principles and ideas that free nations prize, (Putin) has performed an extraordinary feat of leadership in placing stability on a nation that has rarely known it and brought Russia back to the table of world power. For that reason, Vladimir Putin is Time's 2007 Person of the Year," the magazine said.

I am Sergey Brin! I was born in Moscow. In 1979,when I was 5, my family immigrated to California, USA . I remember that on my 9th birthday, I got my first computer “Commodore 64”.
Later I graduated with honors in the University of Maryland in Mathematics and IT. The main field of my science research was the technologies used to collect data from unsystematic sources as well as large quantities of texts and science data. I was the author of dozens of articles in leading American academic magazines.
The greatest event in my life happened when in 1998 I was preparing for the defense(論文答辯) of my Doctor’s degree in the Stanford University. There the fate made me meet Larry Page—a young computer genius. Larry belonged to the intellectual society. I and Larry quickly became friends when we were working together.
We were searching day and night on the Internet. We were finding a lot of information but with the feeling we still couldn’t find enough of what we were looking for . Naturally the idea for a search engine that would allow specific information to be found in the endless pool of data was born like it came to us. It wasn’t our plans but we gave up the education at the university. You know the next part ,maybe—we managed to turn an ordinary garage in Peplo Park, California , the USA into our first office, in which Google was born. With excitement we typed the name of the thing which we created with love on September 14th,1998—www.Google.com. Now after those years we bought this garage. As a symbol it will always remind us that everything is possible.

I once experienced an unforgettable trip to Gloucester to see some of the world’s most beautiful and exciting animals in their own habitat(棲息地), the North Atlantic Ocean.
After a long trip by bus, we got on the ship. After a while, we stopped and everyone began to shout because we saw a humpback whale(座頭鯨). It was wonderful. Sometimes, whales came so close to the ship that you thought you could easily touch them.
While we were watching the whales, a guide was giving us some information about them, She told us that we saw only two kinds of whales- 50 foot humpback whales (singing whales) and 70-foot finback whales(the second largest whales on earth). She also said we could easily recognize a whale by its tail because every whale has a different kind of tail just like people have different fingerprints.
They all have names, and on this trip we saw “Salt” and “Pepper”, two whales named by a biologist and a fisherman. They were swimming toghter all the time.
I took twenty-seven photos, but it was very hard to take them because the whales were quick and stayed on the surface of the ocean just for a short time. It was really something. It was one of the chances that a person hardly ever experiences in life, but I had that chance.

Dear Expert:
I was asked to retrieve my 14-year-old daughter from a five-day camping trip. She was suffering from such severe separation anxiety, her teacher thought she should go home. She hadn’t eaten anything and had refused to participate in any activities. The thing is my daughter is extremely bright and has many friends;she organized a few friends into a band, and it belongs to several school clubs. She’s just always had an extreme fear of being away from home.I don’t want her to miss out on other trips.
Yours truly,
Jonathan

Dear Jonathan:
Sometimes kids can push through homesickness, but in other instances they become hurt mentally and develop greater anxiety around outings, which can worsen and prolong(延長) the problem.Separation anxiety can be the result of many complex interactions some genetic(遺傳的) and some learned. People with high anxiety tend to be fearful and worried, ever when the sense of threat is minimum(最低程度).Lots of talented, creative and successful people are exceedingly anxious.
I believe your daughter is bright, active and popular, but simply can’t do well outside her home base.My suggestion is to take things in small steps,so your daughter can experience success, and always have a fallback(退卻) plan if she needs it.For instance, she can plan an overnight with a friend, but assure her it’s no big deal to pick her up at midnight if she changes her mind. What’s important is to recognize the fear, and make plans to deal with whatever may cause distress. In other words, don’t try to talk your daughter out of her fears, equip her to master them. This way she’ll eventually gain the confidence to go on further trips.
