Last Sunday we went to see a AIDS patient in hospital. We bought her some flower and fruit. She was glad to see us. Many people began to avoid see her after she was infected to HIV virus. A doctor told us that the HIV virus mustn’t be infected through daily communication and that those who suffering from AIDS shouldn’t be looked down. We had a talk with the woman and gave her some CDs as gifts. She was moved to tears and promise to be optimistic and confident in overcoming the disease. We promised to see her again before left. In my opinion, the world will become more beautiful if all of us love each other and help those in the trouble.

本題考查短語(yǔ):be infected with,意為:感染上。

第一種:去掉who,此時(shí)suffering擔(dān)當(dāng)后置定語(yǔ),修飾those,表主動(dòng)承受。第二種:在who之后加上are,擔(dān)當(dāng)定語(yǔ)從句的謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞。

【題目】In my dual(雙重的) profession as an educator and health care provider, I have worked with numerous children infected with the virus that causes AIDS. The relationships that I have had with these special kids have been gifts in my life. They have taught me so many things, but I have especially learned that great courage can be found in the smallest of packages.Let me tell you about Tyler.

Tyler was born infected with HIV;his mother was also infected. From the very beginning of his life, he was dependent on medications(藥物) to enable him to survive. When he was five, he had a tube surgically inserted in a vein in his chest. This tube was connected to a pump, which he carried in a small backpack on his back.Medications were hooked up to this pump and were continuously supplied through this tube to his bloodstream. At times, he also needed supplemented oxygen to support his breathing.

Tyler wasn't willing to give up one single moment of his childhood to this deadly disease. It was not unusual to find him playing and racing around his backyard, wearing his medicine-laden backpack and dragging his tank of oxygen behind him in his little wagon. All of us who knew Tyler marveled at his pure joy in being alive and the energy it gave him. Tyler's mom often teased him by telling him that he moved so fast she needed to dress him in red. That way, when she peered through the window to check on him playing in the yard, she could quickly spot him.

This dreaded disease eventually wore down even the likes of a little dynamo like Tyler. He grew quite ill and, unfortunately,so did his HIV-infected mother. When it became apparent that he wasn't going to survive,Tyler's mom talked to him about death. She comforted him by telling Tyler that she was dying too,and that s he would be with him soon in heaven.

A few days before his death,Tyler beckoned10) me over to his hospital bed and whispered,“I might die soon.I'm not scared. When I die, please dress me in red.Mom promised she's coming to heaven, too.I'll be playing when she gets there, and I want to make sure she can find me.”

Many young people want to become pop stars. It is their great ambition(雄心)in life. They think : pop stars make a lot of money ; they lead interesting and exciting lives ; thousands of fans adore them ; they become famous.

Yes, but first they must become stars. Most performers start life with a group. This is the pattern nowadays. But there are many groups and the competition is hard. Groups appear and disappear almost overnight. Only a small number stay. Almost without exception (例外)they have to work very hard before they reach the top.

And very few reach the top and stay there. In England there are perhaps thirty or so groups at the top. Most of these do not earn so much money ; perhaps $ 400 each time they perform. What is more, they have quite a lot of expenses. They have to pay a manager, for example. He is the key person in their lives and he takes about 20% of their earningsperhaps more. Then there are their clothes, their instruments and their van(車)

And don't forget they have to travel a great deal, sometimes 2,000 miles in one week. At times they even sleep in their van instead of a hotel, just to save money.

So now, what do you think? Are pop stars so rich? And do they have such exciting lives?

【1】Which of the following is the reason why many young people want to become pop stars?

A. Living an exciting life.

【3】Why is the group's manager well paid?

A. Because he runs this group.

B. Because he looks after them.

C. Because he is important to them.

【4】How do pop groups spend the money they earn?

A. They pay the manager 20% of their earnings or more.

Sir,

Just over six months ago, I saw an advertisement in the Morning Mail for a set of the complete works of William Shakespeare. Your company, Cosmo books Ltd., offered this set (eight books of plays and two books of poetry) at what was claimed to be a ‘remarkable’ price: fifteen pounds and fifty pence, including postage and packing. I had wanted a set of Shakespeare’s plays and poems for some time, and these books, in red imitation leather, looked particularly attractive; so I sent for them.

Two weeks later, the books arrived, together with a set of the complete works of Charles Dickens which I had not ordered. So I returned the Dickens books to you, with a cheque for fifteen pounds and fifty pence for the works of Shakespeare. Two more weeks passed. Then there arrived on my door step a second set of the works of Shakespeare, the same set of novels by Dickens and a six book set of the plays of Moliere, in French. Since I do not read French, these were of no use to me at all. However, I could not afford to post all these books back to you, so I wrote to you at the end of August of last year, instructing you to come and collect all the books that I did not want, and asking you not to send any other books until further notice.

You did not reply to that letter. Instead you sent me a bill for forty two pounds, and a set of the plays of Schiller, in German. Since then, a new set of books has arrived every two weeks, the works of Goethe, the poems of Milton, the plays of Strindberg; I hardly know what I have. The books are still all in their boxes, in the garage, and my car has to stand in the rain outside.

I have no room for any more books, and even if I read from now until the Last Judgment, I should not finish reading all the books that you have sent me.

Please send no more books, send no more bills, send no more angry letters demanding payment. Just send one large lorry and take all the books away, leaving me only with the one set of the complete works of Shakespeare for which I have paid.

Yours faithfully,

SIMON WALKER
