Sleep is a basic necessity of life and it is as important to our health as air, food and water. When we sleep well, we wake up feeling energetic, alert and ready to face daily challenges. When we don’t every part of our lives can suffer.
A survey made by the 2002 National Sleep Foundation (NSF) in America found that 74 percent of American adults are experiencing a sleep problem a few nights a week or more and 39 percent get less than 7 hours of sleep each night and want to have a sleep during the day.
Getting enough continuous quality sleep influences how we feel and perform next day. Getting enough sleep refers to the amount of sleep you need not to feel tired next day. Although sleep experts generally recommend an average of 7-9 hours each night, some people can get along with less while others need as many as ten hours to feel energetic next day. Sleep requirements vary(變化)over the life cycle. Newborns and babies need a lot of sleep and have several periods of sleep throughout a 24-hour time period. Teenagers’ sleep patterns turn to a later sleep-wake cycle, but they still need around 9 hours of sleep. Throughout adulthood, even as we get older, we need 7-9 hours of sleep. Sleep patterns may change, but the need for sleep remains the same.
According to the 2002 poll. Over 80 percent of American adults believe that not getting enough sleep leads to poor performance at work, risk of injury, poor health and difficulty getting along with others. Often, people become easily annoyed due to lack of sleep. Recent research suggests that lack of sleep also leads to approximately 100,00 sleep-related traffic accidents each year and results in 1,500 deaths.
If you are having sleep problems, turn to a sleep diary published by the National Sleep Foundation. A sleep diary helps you examine some of your health and sleep habits so that you and your doctor can find some reasons for poor sleep. Establishing a regular bed and wake-up schedule may also help you sleep well. Besides, talking to your doctor or a sleep specialist is of great help. Most sleep disorders can be successfully treated once properly diagnosed(診斷).

Recently I read an article in a magazine. It was of a mother who was worried about his son just because of he always kept his hair long. The mother thought that was not right, but the son felt there was nothing unusually about it. Different generations have different opinions on the same thing. That is what is meaning by “ the generation gap”. We can see them in our daily lives. Most of our parents like listening to old song while young people prefer pop songs. Every time my father finds me listen to rock music, he always shouted, “Shut it off. It’s awful!” How can we deal the generation gap?

When the weather turns warm, everyone wants to be in or around the water. Learning how to keep safe is necessary if you plan to go swimming.
“Buddy up!” Always swim with a partner, every time-and this is very important. Even experienced swimmers can become tired or face sudden accidents, which might make it difficult to get out of the water. When you swim together, you can help each other or go for help in a minute.
Get skilled. It’s good to go be fully prepared. Learning some life-saving skills can help you save a life. A number of organizations offer free classes to both beginning and experienced swimmers and boaters. Check with local hospitals, or the Red Cross.
Know your limits (極限). Swimming an be a lot of fun and you might want to stay in the water as long as possible. If you’re not a good swimmer or you’re just learning to swim, don’t go in water that’s so deep for you and don’t try to keep up with skilled swimmers. That can be dangerous, especially when your friends are challenging you.
If you are a good swimmer and have had lessons, keep an eye on friends who aren’t as comfortable or as skilled as you are. If they or you are getting tired, you should take a break for a while.
Swim in safe areas only. It’s a good idea to swim only in places that are directed by a lifeguard. No one can expect changing ocean currents (水流), sudden storms, or other dangers. In the event that something does go wrong, lifeguards trained in life-saving skills are ready to help.
Swimming in an open body of water like a lake is different from swimming in a pool. Do your research so you know where not to swim, and pay attention to any warning sign(警告標(biāo)志) posted in the area.

Dear Editor,
Recently we have made a discussion about the prevent of global warming in our research
group. Everybody has become aware the green-house effect, what has drawn the attention of the world. Many scientists on the summit of COPENHAGEN warned any rise above 2 degrees could lead to a sea level rise threatening islands and coastal cities, kill off many specie of animals and plants. As a result of, every nation should work together to limit the release of carbon dioxide. Everybody should shoulder the responsible for fight against climate change, and a low carbon life is a must.
I think fight against global warming is part of environmental protection. If we humans are more friend to nature, nature will be friendly, too. It’s time everybody rethink our role in keeping peace with our mother, nature.
Yours   sincerely,
Lihua
