When I was in junior high school, what my friends thought of me was really important to me. During those years, I grew much than most of my peers(同齡人). Being so tall made me feel . In order to keep the focus off my unusual , I went along with the crowd who would other kids at school. It made sure that the tricks were at others, and not at me.

Once before a class, my friends and I pulled a trick on one of the kids on the basketball team, which made him terribly embarrassed. I thought it was going to be funny, it all ended up that no one thought it was.

My parents didn’t always think that my was funny. They reminded me about “The Golden Rule”: to others as I would like to be treated. What I was doing was other kids, and in turn hurting my as someone to be looked up to. My friends were looking up to me I was tall, but what did they see?

My parents wanted me to be a leader who set a good to others. They taught me to set my own goals, and to do the at everything that I set out to do. They told me to be the leader that I was to be-to be a big man in my heart and actions, as well as in my body. I had to myself whether or not I would be the kind of leader and person my parents I was inside, but I knew in my heart that they were .

“Be a leader, Shaquille, not a(n) . Since people already have to look up to you, give them a good reason to do so.”

“BANG!” the door caused a reverberation (回聲). It was just standing there, with father standing on one side, and I on the other side.

We were both in great anger. “Never set foot in this house again!” stormed father. With tears welling up in my eyes, I rushed out of the flat and ran along the street.

The street lights were shining, causing rather sad-feeling. I wandered aimlessly.

A young father who held a child in his arms walked past me. I felt as if I saw my childhood from another space: happy and carefree.

But now … I don’t know whether it is because I have grown up or because dad is getting old. We differ in our ways of thinking. He always put his opinions and codes of behavior on me. Whenever I do something wrong, he never admits it. We are just like two people coming from two different worlds. It feels like there is an iron door between us that can never be opened.

I wandered the streets, without a destination in mind. My heart was frozen on this hot summer night. As I walked on there were fewer and fewer people on th e streets, until I had only the street lights to keep me company. When I finally reached the high-rise apartment block in which I lived , I saw that the light was still on.

I thought to myself: “Is father waiting for me, or is he still angry with me?”

In fact, it was nothing. Perhaps, dad was throwing away some of his old stamps. Perhaps he thought they were useless. I never had the courage to tell him that I liked collecting stamps. I can’t stand his outrageous(蠻橫的)words: “I can’t throw you away, let alone these old papers?”

All the lights were off except father’s.

Dad was always like this. Maybe he didn’t know how to express himself. After shouting at me, he never showed any mercy or any moments of regret. After an argument he has the habit of creeping up in my sleep and then tucking me underneath the covers.

This was how he always was. He has been a leader for so long that telling everyone else what to do has become his second nature.

The light was still on. “Am I wrong?” I whispered, maybe… With the key in hand, I was as nervous as I had ever been. At last, I decided to open the door. As soon as I opened the door tears ran down my cheeks. I suddenly realized that the iron door that I had imagined between us did not exist(存在) at all. Love—it second to none.

閱讀下面的短文,然后按要求寫一篇150字左右的英語短文。

There once was a little boy who had a bad temper (脾氣). His father gave him a bag of nails (釘子) and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence.

The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually became smaller. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.

Finally the day came when the boy didn’t lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone.

The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, “You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave wounds just like these. And no matter how many times you say you’re sorry, the wounds will still be there.”

Happiness is short, determined by every-thing from the weather to the size of your bank account. We’re not suggesting that you can reach a lasting state called “happiness” and remain there. But there are many ways to be far away from the paths of anxiety, anger frustration, and sadness once or even several times throughout the day.

1. Go to sleep. We have become a nation of sleep-deprived citizens. Taking a daily nap or getting into bed at 8 p.m. one night with a good book and turning the light out an hour later can have a better effect on your mood than any number of bubble baths or massages.

2. Hum along. Studies find that music makes parts of the brain active that produce happiness. It’s also relaxing. In one study, older adults who listened to their choice of music during the eye surgery had significantly lower heart rates, blood pressure, etc.

3. Volunteer. Helping others provides social interaction. While happy people are more likely to help others, helping others increases your happiness. One study found that volunteer work improved the aspects of well-being: happiness, life satisfaction, self-esteem(自尊), sense of control over life, and physical health.

4. Develop close relationships. People who have a lot of supportive friends are much more likely to have healthier blood pressure and stress hormone levels than those with two or fewer close friends. Women and a few men also seem to benefit from good relationships with their parents and spouses(配偶). People who feel lonely and depressed are three to five times more likely to get sick and die too early than those who have feelings of love, connection, and community.

5. Take care of the soul. Studies find that actively religious people are happier and cope better with crises, according to David Myers, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at Hope College in Holland, Michigan. For many people, faith provides a sense of life’s meaning, feelings of acceptance, a reason to focus beyond yourself, and a new view on life’s sadness. Even if you’re not religious, strong faith may offer similar benefits.
