[1]People with lower intelligence are more likely to be unhappy than their brighter colleagues, according to UK researchers, Their study of 6,870 people showed low intelligence was often linked with lower income and poor mental health, which contributed to unhappiness. The researchers are calling for more help and support to be targeted at people with lower IQs. Their findings were published in the journal Psychological Medicine.
[2]The researchers analyzed data from the Adult Psychiatric Morbity Survey in England. One of the questions was:“Taking all things together, how would you say you were these days—very happy ,fairly happy or not too happy?” The highest part saying they were “        ”was found in people with an IQ between 120 and 129-43% said they were very happy..
[3]However, the highest proportion saying “not too happy”was found in people with an IQ between 70 and 79. The study said lower intelligence was linked to lower income, worse health and needing help with daily life, such as shopping or housework—all of which contributed to unhappiness.
[4]Dr Hassiotis said:“There is some evidence that long term strategies directed at young children from poor backgrounds can have a positive impact on IQ, wellbeing and life opportunities”. Such interventions(干涉)are likely to be costly, but the initial costs may be offset(抵消)by future benefits such as a reduced reliance on state benefits and better mental and physical health”.
[5]He added that the study was particularly helpful as it identified some of the factors(因素)that influence the association between IQ and happiness. The study also emphasized the interventions to prevent lower IQ leading to greater unhappiness.

Speaking English is not only about using proper grammar. To use English effectively, you need to understand the culture in which it is spoken. Here are a number of important tips to remember when speaking English in the United States.
General Points to Remember
Most Americans only speak English: while it is true that more and more Americans speak Spanish, most Americans           . Don’t expect them to understand your native language.
Americans have difficulties in understanding foreign accents: many Americans are not used to foreign accents. This requires patience from both of you!
Conversation Tips
Speak about locations: Americans love to talk about locations. When speaking to a stranger, ask him/her where he/she is from and then make a connection with that place. For example: “Oh, I have a friend who studied in Los Angeles. He says it’s beautiful place to live in.” Most Americans will then willingly talk about their experiences while living in or visiting that particular city or area.
Talk about sports: Americans love sports! However, they love American sports! When speaking about football, most Americans understand “American Football”, not soccer.
Addressing People
Use last names with people you do not know: address people using their titles (Mr, Ms, Dr) and their last names.
Always use “Ms” when addressing women: it is important to use “Ms” when addressing a woman. Only use “Mrs” when the woman has asked you to do so!
Public Behaviors
Always shake hands: Americans shake hands when greeting each other. This is true for both men and women. Other forms of greeting are generally not appreciated. Smoking is out! Smoking, ever in public places, is strongly disapproved of by most Americans in the modern United States.

[1] Many good reasons for parents to send their children to camps.
[2]When children go to camp, they are on their own, sometimes for the very first time in their lives. They have to decide what to wear, what to eat and which activities to participate in. As a result they develop confidence and independence.
[3]As self-respect develops from learning to be on their own, children continue to try new activities. Also it is possible that they will engage in what they are unfamiliar with. In school, children do not experience success in the same way. Camp can be a school without failure because just having fun makes them a success.
[4]One of the greatest benefits of a camp experience is that children develop social skills. In a camp setting, a good counselor will make sure that every camper is included in the activity and that each child interacts with the others in a positive way. They learn to give and take, and they learn how to work and cooperate. Something as simple as clean-up, is not only there to get the cabin clean, but to promote a team atmosphere of working together which in turn results in friendship.
[5]The obvious benefit of camp is that campers make long lasting friendships. These friendships can often be unique and special because campers are living with each other and see the true personalities. Children learn to see others from a different viewpoint. Children tend to be accepted for who they are and do not have to be concerned about what they wear, what they are good at and how they look. This is because in a camp setting, respect and caring finally win out over materialistic objectives.
[6]In a word, camp does give children fun, friends and fulfillment.

閱讀表達(dá) (共5小題; 每小題2分,滿分10分)
(1)Freezing weather can mean frostbite and hypothermia unless a person is prepared. Today we talk about how to stay warm, dry and safe.
(2)Frostbite is damage that happens when skin is exposed to extreme cold for too long. It mainly happens on the hands, feet, nose and ears.
(3)People with minor cases of frostbite that affect only the skin may not suffer any permanent damage. But if deeper tissue is affected, a person is likely to feel pain every time the area gets cold.
(4)If blood vessels are damaged, people can suffer a gangrene infection. Sometimes the only way doctors can treat an injury like this is to remove frostbitten areas like fingers and toes.
(5)Hypothermia is a condition that develops when the body cannot produce as much heat as it releases. Signs of hypothermia include uncontrollable shaking, very slow breathing and difficulty thinking clearly. Hypothermia can lead to death if the person does not receive help.
(6)To avoid cold-related injuries, here is a simple way to remember four basic steps to staying warm. Think of COLD -- C.O.L.D.
(7)The C stands for cover. Wear a hat and scarf to keep heat from escaping through the head, neck and ears. And wear mittens instead of gloves. In gloves, the fingers are separated, so the hands might not stay as warm as they would in mittens.
(8)The O stands for overexertion. Avoid activities that will make you sweaty. Wet clothes and cold weather are a dangerous combination.
(9)L is for layers. Wearing loose, lightweight clothes, one layer on top of another, is better than wearing a single heavy layer of clothing. Make sure outerwear is made of material that is water-resistant and tightly knit.
(10)________________. In other words, stay as dry as possible. Pay attention to the places where snow can enter clothing. These include the tops of boots, the necks of coats and the wrist areas of mittens or gloves.
(11)And here are two other things to keep in mind -- one for children and the other for adults. Eating snow might be fun but it lowers the body's temperature. And drinking alcohol might make a person feel warm. But what it really does is weaken the body's ability to hold heat.

Called “the School of the Future” and created with help from software giant Microsoft, a recently-opened public school in Philadelphia, US, is believed to be the first in the world to combine innovation teaching methods with the latest technology.  At this school, students work on wireless laptops, teachers avoid traditional subjects for real-world topics and parents can track their child's work on the Internet.
The school, which cost the school district $63 million to build, is free and has no entrance exams. The 170 ninth-grade students were selected at random from l,500 applicants.
Philadelphia School District Chief Executive Paul Vallas told students they would be observed by other schools around the world. “You have become instant role models,” Vallas said. “People are going to be watching you. “
Students still sit in classrooms, but lessons rely heavily on information found on the Internet and on interactive software. Students will be allowed to learn at their own pace. Homework is done on computer and sent to the teacher for grading and parents can access the school's network to read teacher feedback on their child's progress.
Traditional education fails to teach students the skills of problem-solving, critical thinking and effective communication, which they need to succeed in the 21st century, Principal Shirley Grover said in an interview. “It's not about memorizing certain algebraic equations (代數(shù)方程式)and then presenting them in a test,” Grover said. “It's about thinking how maths might be used to solve a quality-of-water problem or how it might be used to determine whether or not we are safe in Philadelphia from the birdflu.”
David Terry, 14, said he was hoping to “turn over a new leaf” after discipline problems in his previous school left him with an “average to really bad” academic record. “This is a great opportunity for me,” he said. “In other schools, I would not       .”
