20.Seeing in Stereo
Have you wondered why you have two eyes and why they are set close together on the front of your face? The reasons are simple and important to the way you see the rest of your world.
Your eyes are like two small cameras.A camera catches an image(影像)of an object and records it on film.Similarly,when you look at something,each eye takes in what it sees and sends this image to the back of the eyeball.Because your eyes are set close together,they view the world from about the same height but from slightly different angles.Working as a team,the eyes send the images to your brain,which puts them together into a single,centered image.
Seeing in stereo means seeing with two eyes working together,which is called stereoscopic sight.This allows you to view the world in three dimensions,or 3-D.Seeing depth helps you to judge the distance between you and the objeets you see and to adjust to the changing angle at which you see something as you move closer to or farther away from it.If images are coming from only one eye,however,only two of these dimensions-height and width-can be perceived.A world seen with one eye is thus two-dimensional,as in a photograph.
Now consider why your two eyes are on the front of your face.Think of other animals with this same arrangement.They are all animals that hunt,like lions and wolves.Their eyes face directly in front of them.This provides a field of sight about 180degrees wide,which is called binocular sight.On the other hand,animals that are hunted have eyes on the sides of the head,which  Drovides nearly 360-degree field of sight.In order to stay alive,they need to see things coming from the sides and from behind.However,without stereoscopic sight,they have difficulty determining how far a danger is.
With sight both stereoscopic and binocular,humans share with animal hunters the ability to  see from side to side and to accurately determine the distance.If you think it would be great to  have another type of sight,perhaps with hundreds of tiny eyes like many insects do,think again!Each tinv insect eye sees only a tiny part.Besides,what if you needed glasses?Be glad for the  eyesight that you have.

Make a decision not to hold back in conversations.What you have to say is just as important as what other people say.And don't turn down party invitations just because of your shyness.
Prepare yourself for being with others in groups.Make a list of the good qualities you have.Then make a list of ideas,experiences,and skills you would like to share with other people.Think about what you would like to say in advance.Then say it.
If you start feeling self-conscious in a group,take a deep breath and focus your attention on other people.Remember,you are not alone.Other people are concerned about the impression they are making,too.
No one ever gets over being shy completely,but most people do learn to live with their shyness.Even entertainers admit that they often feel shy.They work at fighting their shy feelings so that they can face the cameras and the public.Just making the effort to control shyness can have many rewards.But perhaps the best reason to fight shyness is to give other people a chance to know more about you.

8.Dogs can know the meaning of a human perspective,say researchers.
Dogs are more capable of understanding situations from a human's point of view than has previously been recognized, according to researchers.
They found dogs were four times more likely to steal food they had been forbidden, when lights were turned off so humans in the room could not see.
This suggested the dogs were able to alter their behavior when they knew their owners'perspective had changed.
The study,published in Animal Cognition,conducted tests on eighty-four dogs.
The experiments had been trying to find whether dogs could make their behavior suitable to react to the changed circumstances of their human owners.It wanted to see if dogs had a"flexible understanding"that could show they understood the viewpoint of a human.
It found that when the lights were turned off, dogs in a room with their human owners were much more likely to disobey and steal forbidden food.
The study says it is"unlikely that the dogs simply forgot that the human was in the room"when there was no light.Instead it seems as though the dogs were able to differentiate between when the human was unable or able to see them.
Juliane Kaminski carried out the research into how dogs are influenced by human circumstances.
Dr Juliane Kaminski, from the University of Portsmouth's psychology department, said the study was"incredible because it implies dogs understand the human can't see them, meaning they might understand the human perspective".
Previous studies have suggested that although humans might think that they can recognize different expressions on their dogs'faces, this is often inaccurate and a projection of human emotions.
"Humans constantly attribute certain qualities and emotions to other living things.We know that our own dog is clever or sensitive,but that's us thinking,not them,"said Dr Kaminski.
"These results suggest humans might be right,where dogs are concerned,but we still can't be completely sure if the results mean dogs have a truly flexible understanding of the mind and others'minds.It has always been assumed only humans had this ability.

15.How did the sea horse get its name? It's not hard to guess. The top half of this fish looks like a small horse. But looking at the sea horse's tail, you might think"sea monkey"is a better name. Then there's the sea horse's pouch (育兒袋)."Sea kangaroo"might also be a good name for this fish.
Sea horses live in warm ocean waters all over the world. They keep safe from other fish by hiding in plants and grasses that grow under the sea. They can also change colors to match their surroundings.A sea horse remains in one place for hours at a time by winding its tail around a plant. It feeds on live food, such as small shrimp. For a fish that doesn't move around much, the sea horse eats a lot-in just one day,a sea horse can eat 3,000 shrimp!
A sea horse keeps the same mate for its whole life, and it's the male sea horse that gives birth to baby sea horses. How does this happen?Baby sea horses start out as eggs, which come from the female's body. The male carries the eggs in its pouch for about three weeks until they hatch.Soon after the babies are born, the female gives her mate a new set of eggs.
Sadly, the number of sea horses is becoming smaller. Why is this happening? Some places where sea horses once lived have been filled in to make new land. Also, many sea horses are caught and sold as aquarium fish. This really is not a good idea because most sea horses don't live long in aquariums. The best place for a sea horse is the ocean.

9."Up until about five years ago, students at this school could have worn anything they wanted on Halloween,"said Rosemarie Nielson,a sixth-grade teacher at St.Theresa School,a Roman Catholic elementary school in the Pelham Bay section of the Bronx where there is a prohibition on toy weapons
"When you consider all the horrific things that have happened in recent years, including 9/11,I can't blame any school for wanting to stay away from anything that might promote violence,"Ms.Nielson said.
Mary Ellen Manniello, whose daughter,Courtney,9,is a fourth grader at St.Gabriel School,a Roman Catholic elementary school in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, said she understood why officials had banned weapons with costumes."They're learning more about guns from issues in the street than educational issues."
This year, the school has gone one step further and is prohibiting all costumes at its Halloween festivities.Ms.Manniello said it had become"a chaotic scene,"with parents helping their children change into their costumes at school.
Some parents said the no-weapons policy for Halloween costumes went too far and denied children a chance to express themselves
"Halloween has always been the one day when it was acceptable for our children to be dressed like somebody they are not, like a cowboy or a pirate or a person from outer space, and now we're taking that away from them,"said Laura Santoro,a nurse from New Milford,Conn.,whose 7-year-old son,Johnny,is a second grader at Northville Elementary School there.
Ms.Santoro said that her son would dress as Capt.Jack Sparrow, the character played by Johnny Depp in the"Pirates of the Caribbean"movies,at the school's Halloween party, but that he would not be allowed to take a sword-part of a policy that caught her by surprise last Halloween
"I sent my son to school last year dressed as a special force Power Ranger, and he was told that he couldn't take along his red laser blaster, which really surprised me,because the laser is red and made of plastic and lights up,and it could never, ever be mistaken for a real gun,"Ms.Santoro said."I mean, come on,the whole thing is getting really sad."
53.What do you think is the writer's purpose of writing the passage?B

B.children are buying real guns in the street and there is always violence now.
C.those parents like to help their children change into their costumes at school.
D.children are learning more about guns from educational issues.
55.Which of the following is probably right according to the passage?B
A.Children could bring any weapons into school five or six years ago.
