B、D項(xiàng)中的of和in可用在最高級(jí)中表示范圍:A項(xiàng)的for則不能用在比較級(jí)中。

A項(xiàng)的much只能修飾不可數(shù)名詞,不能修飾本題的points;B項(xiàng)的less與more相反,故不妥;D項(xiàng)的some不能構(gòu)成獲勝的條件。

B項(xiàng)的add up to意為“總計(jì)”,后接加起來(lái)得到的總數(shù);A項(xiàng)的add to意為“增加”;“增添”;“擴(kuò)建”,表示在賓語(yǔ)的基礎(chǔ)上再添加或擴(kuò)建新的東西,用在這里與本句的意思不符;add一般不單獨(dú)使用,后面總是接to, up, up to等詞。

A項(xiàng)的However表示轉(zhuǎn)折;C項(xiàng)的After all意為“畢竟”;D項(xiàng)的Such as用來(lái)列舉事物,一般后面跟上一連串并列的名詞。

【19】表示“得分多”;“成績(jī)好”用a good score,不說(shuō)a good points, idea和way不表示得分。

play, get, take都不能表示此意。

A new study shows students who write notes by hand during lectures perform better on exams than those who use laptops

Students are increasingly using laptops for notetaking because of speed and legibility(清晰度). But the research has found laptop users are less able to remember and apply the concepts they have been taught.

Researchers performed experiments that aimed to find out whether using a laptop increased the tendency to make notes mindlessly” by taking down word for word what the professors said.

In the first experiment, students were given either a laptop or pen and paper. They listened to the same lectures and were told to use their usual notetaking skills. Thirty minutes after the talk, they were examined on their ability to remember facts and on how well they understood concepts.

The researchers found that laptop users took twice as many notes as those who wrote by hand. However, the typists performed worse at remembering and applying the concepts. Both groups scored similarly when it came to memorizing facts.

The researchers' report said, “While more notes are beneficial,if the notes are taken mindlessly, as is more likely the case on a laptop, the benefit disappears.

In another experiment aimed at testing longterm memory, students took notes as before but were tested a week after the lecture. This time, the students who wrote notes by hand performed significantly better on the exam.

These two experiments suggest that handwritten notes are not only better for immediate learning and understanding, but that they also lead to superior revision in the future.

【1】More and more students favor laptops for notetaking because they can ________.

A. write more notes B. digest concepts better

C. get higher scores D. understand lectures better

2While taking notes, laptop users tend to be ________.

A

The human nose has given to the language of the world many interesting expressions. Of course this is not surprising. Without the nose we could not breathe or smell. It is the part of the face that gives a person special character. Cyrano De Bergerac said that a large nose showed a great man—brave, polite, manly, and bright. A famous woman poet wished that she had two noses to smell a rose. Blaise Pascal, a French philosopher(哲學(xué)家)made an interesting comment about Cleopatra's nose. “If it had been shorter,”he said,“it would have changed the whole face of the world.”Historically, man's nose has had an important role in his imagination. Man has referred to the nose in many ways to express his feelings. Expressions about the nose refer to human weakness, anger, pride, jealousy(嫉妒)and revenge(報(bào)復(fù)). In English there are a number of phrases about the nose. For example, To_hold_up_one's_nose expresses a basic human feeling—pride. People can hold up their noses at people, things and places. The phrases, to be led around by the nose, shows man's weakness. A person who is led around by the nose lets other people control him. On the other hand, a person who follows his nose, lets his instinct guide him.

For the human emotion of rejection, the phrase to_have_one's_nose_put_out_of_joint is very descriptive. The expression applies to persons who have been turned aside because of a competitor. Their pride is hurt and they feel rejected. This expression is not new. It was used by Erasmus in 1542.

This is only a sampling of expressions in English dealing with the nose. There are a number of others. However, it should be as plain as the nose on your face that the nose is more than an organ for breathing and smelling!

__【1】__When a starving man gets a meal, he begins to think about an overcoat; when an executive gets a new sports car, visions of country clubs and pleasure beats dance into view.

The many wants of mankind might be regarded as making up several levels. __【2】__.

The first and most basic level of wants involves food. Once this want is satisfied, a second level of wants appears:clothing and some sort of shelter. By the end of World War II these wants were satisfied for a great majority of Americans. __【3】__ It included such items as automobile sand new houses.

By 1957 or 1958 this third level of wants was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s a fourth level of wants appeared:the “l(fā)ife-enriching”level. While the other levels involve physical satisfaction-the feeding, comfort, safety, and transportation of the human body-this level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services, many of which could be called “l(fā)uxury” items. Among them are vacation trips, the best medical care, and entertainment. __【4】__

One this level, a greater percentage of consumer spending goes to services, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of wants as their income increases, or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level?

A fifth level probably would involve wants that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime and prejudice. __【5】__In this way, we can enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.

A.Then a third level appeared.

B.Human wants seem endless.

C.When there is money enough to satisfy one level of wants, another level appears.

D.There are several levels of wants in one's life.
