【題目】Some Myths You Strongly Keep Believing Are Untrue

There are varieties of false myths we spread from day to day.1. Otherwise, people will continue to believe such ridiculous myths undoubtedly. You will realize some of the most acceptable facts are completely untrue.

Men get beer bellies from beer.

We blame the beer for the belly. It is widely believed that men who constantly drink beer end up with a beer belly. However, it is not the beer that’s to blame, but the abundance of unhealthy snacks that often accompany the drink. Alcohol in beer irritates the stomach, therefore causing an increased appetite. Dr. Michael Jensen, an obesity specialist in Minnesota USA says that drinking beer makes liver burn alcohol instead of fat, leaving the latter to accumulate in the waist.2, while the one of women’s accumulates in the hips and bottoms, as a result of different sexual characteristics.

3.

We are told that dogs see the world in black and white. But the truth is that they can distinguish colors just not in the same way we do. Jay Needs from the University of Washington in Seattle proves that our furry friends are able to receive a limited range of colors, which means they can distinguish objects of the same shape. In general, a dog’s vision is very similar to that of a person with red-green color blindness.

Carrots improve eyesight.

4. This myth came into existence during the Second World War. The British Army claimed that fighter pilots had excellent night vision as a result of their consumption of large quantities of carrots. Actually, they had radars onboard which made it faster and easier to detect the enemies. The myth about the amazing power of carrots was invented and spread by the media so that enemies would not learn about the fact.5.

A. Dogs can distinguish colors

B. Men’s fat is stored in their bellies

C. Dogs see the world in black and white

D. Men’s fat is not mostly accumulated in these parts

E. Eventually, it spread all over the world and people are still convinced of it

【題目】Advice for Graduates

Thank you for letting me share this wonderful day with you. The next part of my speech consists of some advice, which is rarely valued, seldom remembered, never followed. As Oscar Wilde said, 1 So, here comes the advice.

First, every time you celebrate an achievement, 2 Thank your parents and friends who supported you, thank your professors who were inspirational, and especially thank the other professors whose less-than brilliant lectures forced you to teach yourself. To your fellow students who have added immeasurably to your education during those late night discussions, hug them.

Second, in your future life, cultivate a generous spirit. 3 Leave the change on the table. In a successful cooperation, everybody gets 90 percent of the profit.

My third piece of advice is as follows: As you begin this new stage of your lives, follow your passion. If you don’t have a passion, don’t be satisfied until you find one. 4 When I was your age, I was incredibly single-minded in my goal to be a physicist. After college, I spent eight years as a graduate student and postdoc at Berkeley, and then nine years at Bell Labs. During that my time, my central focus and professional joy was physics.

Here is my final advice. Pursuing a personal passion is important, but it should not be your only goal. When you are old and gray, and look back on your life, you will want to be proud of what you have done. The source of that pride won’t be the things you have acquired or the recognition you have received. 5

A.It will be the lives you have touched and the difference you have made.

B.In all negotiations, don’t bargain for the last, little advantage.

C.“I like to do all the talking myself. It saves time, and prevents arguments.”

D.“The only thing to do with good advice is to pass it on. It is never of any use to oneself.”

E.Life is too short to go through it without caring deeply about something.

F.be thankful to those who made it possible.

G.Change your manners when you are dealing with others.

I was traveling by myself in Mumbai, India. I enjoyed the free of going anywhere as I liked. However, I was confused to seeing the many choices of restaurants. I could see French restaurants, Japanese restaurants, Mexican restaurants and so on. After trying aimless for a few days, I began to miss Chinese food and went into Chinese restaurant. To my surprising, I found crowds of people in it. I haven't expected Chinese food could be so popular in India. The food was not exactly like which I ate at home and it was familiar enough to be comforting. An Indian customer share one table with me told me Chinese food is so popular that even restaurants serving for Indian food will usually include a Chinese section on the menu. But when he said, "We don't even think it's Chinese. It's very familiar and comforting.” I couldn't help feeling shocked.

Sometimes 1 feel that living in a city makes people lonely than before. People always feel strangers cannot trusted. They think this is not normal to start talking to anyone or even smile at anyone. I desire to change that. Last week, while I was skate, a man ran by, smiling at me. He said something to me about doing sports or he hoped to be able to finishing his run. I smiled back and said that he certain would. And then a family cycles by when I was in the park. One of the girl waved at me with a big smile, and I waved back enthusiastically. I do believe such small gestures can change into the world we live in.
