【答案】

Dear Editor,

I’m a senior high school student. It’s reported that in China many children in mountainous areas still can’t go to school because of poverty. Last week, our class held a discussion about how to help them to go to school and live a happy childhood.

Here are our suggestions. First, some old textbooks and clothes can be collected and sent to those children so that they can be reused by them. Second, it’s also very important to appeal to more people and social organizations to help and care for those poor children. As far as I’m concerned, we should save some of our pocket money and give it to those children in need. Above all, we should give them respect, never looking down upon them because they are poor.

We’ll really appreciate it if you can, through the English Weekly, increase public awareness of the poor children’s living conditions and call on more people to help them.

Yours sincerely,

Li Hua

This is the first time that I had been away from home, so I find it hard to live here. How I wish I could turn to Lucy, who once gave me much help! I had trouble with my study in Grade 9. So frustrating was I that I began to play computer games after school, when I should have paid more attention to catch up with others. Beside, I was even caught cheating in the exam, it worried my parents a lot. When asking about the reason why I fell far behind, I was too guilty to say a word.

It was then Lucy came to my help, telling me not to give up. To my amazement, I made a great progress. Finally, I even became one of the top student in my class. I must say thanks to Lucy, without her help I could never have had such good grades.

Kids and food: advice for parents

It is important for parents to know how to help their kids eat healthy. Here are a few easy ways.

Parents control the supply lines.

【1】 Though kids may keep asking for less nutritious foods, parents should decide which foods are regularly provided in the house. Kids won’t go hungry. They’ll eat what’s available in the fridge at home.

Say goodbye to “clean-plate club”.

2 Lots of parents grew up under the clean-plate rule, but that way doesn’t help kids listen to their own bodies when they are full. When kids feel full, they’re likely to overeat.

3

Food preferences are developed early in life, so try to offer different kinds of food. Likes and dislikes begin forming even when kids are babies. Parents may need to serve a new food on several different occasions(時(shí)機(jī)) for a child to accept it.

Food is not love.

Find better ways to say “I love you.” When foods are used to reward kids and show love, they may start to turn to food when feeling worried or unhappy. 4

Kids do as you do.

5 When trying to teach good eating habits, try to set the best example. Choose nutritious food, eat at the table, and don’t forget breakfast.

A. Start them young.

B. Rewrite the kids’ menu.

C. Be a role model and eat healthy yourself.

D. Offer praise and attention instead of food treats.

E. Let kids stop eating when they feel they’ve had enough.

F. You decide which foods to buy and when to serve them.

G. Let kids choose what to eat and how much of it they want.

【題目】The meaning of the word “volunteer” may be a little different in different countries, but it usually means “one who offers his or her services.” There are many different ways in which people can volunteer, such as taking care of sick people, working on homes for homeless children, and picking up garbage (垃圾) from beaches and parks. Volunteers may work within their countries or in other countries. They are often people with a strong wish to help those who are less fortunate than themselves. Volunteers don’t expect any kind of pay.

At the root of volunteering is the idea that one person may have the ability to offer services that can help other people. Tracy, a good friend of mine, however, recently came back from India with a new idea of what being a volunteer means. She worked for two and a half weeks in one of Mother Teresa’s homes in Calcutta. The following is her story.

“I first heard about Mother Teresa in my high school, we watched a video(錄像) about her work in India and all over the world. I was so moved by her spirit to help others and her endless love for every human being that after I graduated from high school, I too wanted to try her kind of work. So with two friends I flew to Calcutta for a few weeks.”

“I was asked to work in a home for sick people. I helped wash clothes and sheets, and pass out lunch. I also fed the people who were too weak to feed themselves and tried to cheer the up. I felt it was better to share with them than to think that I have helped them. To be honest, I don’t think I was helping very much. It was then that I realized that I had not really come to help, but to learn about and experience another culture(文化) that helped improve my own understanding of life and the world.”

【1】According to the text, a volunteer refers to a person who ______.

A. is willing to help those in need without pay

B. can afford to travel to different places

C. has a strong wish to be successful

D. has made a big fortune in life

【2】Tracy started her work as a volunteer _______.

A. after she met Mother Teresa

B. after she finished high school

C. when she was touring Calcutta

D. when she was working in a hospital

【3】Why did Tracy choose to be a volunteer?

A. She liked to work with Mother Teresa.

B. She had already had some experience.

C. She was asked by Mother Teresa’s example.

D. She wanted to follow Mother Teresa’s example.

【4】What is Tracy’s “new idea” (Paragraph 2) of being a volunteer?

A. Going abroad to help the sick.

B. Working in Mother Teresa’s home.

C. Doing simple things to help the poor.

D. Improving oneself through helping others.

Scientists have discovered that_【1】 (stay) in the cold could help us lose weight. Researchers at the University of California found that exposure to the cold increases levels of a protein that helps form brown fat--the type of fat that produces heat and keeps us warm. Brown fat burns energy, 2 helps us lose weight. White fat stores extra energy, which results3 weight gain. The researchers said that because air conditioning and heating give us constant, 4 (comfort) temperatures, our body’s need for brown fat has decreased. They found that: “Outdoor workers in northern Finland who 5 (expose) to cold temperature have 6 significant amount of brown fat when 7 (compare) to same-aged indoor workers.” The research was conducted on two different control groups of mice. 8 group was injected with the protein that helps create brown fat. This group later gained 30% less weight after both groups were fed high-fat diets. The researchers say this could be good news in the fight against obesity. People who are obese have 9 (low) levels of brown fat than thinner people. Head researcher Hei Sook Sul said, “This protein could become an important target for research into the treatment and prevention of obesity and obesity-related diseases.” She added, “If you can somehow increase levels of this protein, you could 【10 (possible) lose more weight even if eating the same amount of food.”

【題目】Not only fashion and music are making a return—houses built in 1970s have proven to be better at cutting energy waste than those built today. The tea cosy (茶壺套) design, created in the mid-1970s and built in the early 1980s for low-income people, could provide a blueprint for meeting the Government aims of producing less CO2 from homes.

The 200 houses were designed to provide low-energy housing, and depend on an inner concrete (水泥) structure that holds in heat, protected by highly insulated (隔熱的) setting which produces a “tea cosy” effect. The ordinary-looking houses also depend on more windows on south-facing sides, with northerly facing doors protected by porches (門(mén)廊).

A study found the houses are 50 percent more energy efficient than the average home and use a quarter of the average energy for space heating. According to researchers, they use less than two-thirds of the power of homes built to meet 2010 building demands. And they will still be 25 percent more efficient than houses built to even more strict proposed demands for 2013. The design is one of the few that will be able to meet 2016 demands for zero-carbon homes.

They were in the beginning fixed with just one or two gas heaters per home, although most now have central heating, depending on the heat from the sun and high insulation to keep steady temperatures inside the house. To be comfortable, they only need to use heating for three to four months a year, compared with seven months for UK home on average, and can be lived with no heating at all.

With many house builders at present worrying that new homes are going to be much more expensive to build in order to meet the Government’s ambitious targets, thetea cosymodel meets this need perfectly.

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源: 題型:

【題目】Green is an important color in nature. It is the color of grass and the leaves on trees. It is also the color of most growing plants.

Sometimes, the word green means young, fresh and growing. Sometimes, it describes something that is not yet ripe(成熟的) or finished.

For example, a greenhorn is someone who has no experience, who is new to a situation. In the 15th century, a greenhorn was a young cow or ox whose horns(角) had not yet developed. A century or so later, a greenhorn was a soldier who had not yet had any experience in battle. By the 18th century, a greenhorn had the meaning it has today --- a person who is new in a job.

About 100 years ago, greenhorn was a popular expression in the American west. Old-timers used it to describe a man who had just arrived from one of the big cities back east. The greenhorn lacked the skills he would need to live in the west.

Someone who has the ability to grow plants well is said to have a green thumb. The expression comes from the early 1900s. A person with a green thumb seems to have a magic touch that makes plants grow quickly and well. You might say that the woman next door has a green thumb if her garden continues to grow long after your plants have died.

Green is also the color used to describe the powerful emotion, jealousy(嫉妒). The green-eyed monster is not a frightening creature from outer space. It is an expression used about four hundred years ago by British writer William Shakespeare in his play "Othello."

It describes the unpleasant feeling that a person has when someone has something that he wants. A young man may suffer from the green-eyed monster if his girlfriend begins going out with someone else. Or, that green-eyed monster may affect your friend if you get a pay raise and she does not.

In most places in the world, a green light is a signal to move ahead. A green light on a traffic signal means your car can continue on. In everyday speech, a green light means approval to continue with a project.

【1】If a person was a greenhorn, he might ___________.

A. be good at growing plants

B. get along well with others

C. be a soldier in the 16th century

D. have no experience in doing something

2When you have trouble in growing flowers, you can ask for help from ___________.

A. a green thumb B. a green light

C. a greenhorn D. a green-eyed monster

3If a girl refuses your invitation to a dance party but accepting another gentleman’s, you may___________.

A. need to buy a green light

B. have to get a green thumb

C. show them your greenhorn

D. be affected by the green-eyed monster
