Cooking Kills Four Million People a Year

Polluted airborne particles(大氣懸浮顆粒)kill 7 million people a year, reports the World Health Organization.

That news may not come as a surprise to anyone who has seen images of chimneys in Beijing,Delhi or Mexico. But those factories—or even the jammed roadways of modern cities—are not the biggest killer. Each year,4.3 million people die earlier than they should because of polluted air inside their homes, says the WHO.

What’s causing the air inside people’s homes to be so poisonous that it kills around 11,000 people a day?Stoves.“Having an open fire in your kitchen is like burning 400 cigarettes an hour.” says Kirk Smith,a professor at the University of California at Berkeley, whose research suggests that household air pollution from cooking killed between 3.5 million and 4 million people in 2013.

Not all stoves cause this kind of harm. The ones Smith’s talking about are those that the 3 billion people in the developing world use for heat and cooking, which burn solid fuels such as wood, coal,or crop waste instead of gas.The smoke from those fires produces harmful fine particles and carbon monoxide into homes.Poor ventilation then prevents that smoke from escaping, raising fine particle levels 100 times higher than the limits that the WHO considers acceptable.

Breathing this air eventually causes a lot of diseases:more than a third of the 4.3 million die of a stroke, while a quarter die of heart disease. And around one-third of annual lung disease deaths worldwide are due to waste from coal stoves.

Exposure tends to be extremely harmful for the people who spend the most time around the fire—usually women and young children. In fact, the WHO reports that household air pollution almost doubles the risk for childhood lung disease.

【1】According to Kirk Smith’s research, .

A.factories are the biggest killer worldwide nowadays

B.burning 400 cigarettes an hour is extremely dangerous

C.household air pollution from cooking is surprisingly harmful

D.4.3 million people die earlier each year than they should

【2】What should be the deadly killer in a household kitchen?

People are not so honest that they once were. The temptation to steal is greater than ever before ---- especial in large shops. A detective recently watched a well-dressed woman who always went into a large store on Monday mornings. One Monday, there was fewer people in the shop than usual when the woman came in, but it was easier for the detective to watch her. The woman first bought for a few small articles. After a little time, she chose one of the most expensive dressed in the shop and hand it to an assistant who wrapped it up for him as quickly as possible. Then the woman simply took the parcel and walked out to the shop with paying. When she was arrested, the detective found that the shop assistant was her daughter. The girl ‘gave’ her mother the free dress once a week!

Encouragement and praise can come in many forms, and some ways are better for children’s development than others.Researchers at the University of Chicago who studied mother-child interactions over the course found that the type of praise children receive affects their attitudes toward challenges later in life.Specifically, praise coming with feedback about their behavior that kids made helped them to deal better with difficult experiences five years later, compared with compliments that focused more on the child himself, like “You’re a good boy.”

“This is something we suspected would be the case based on a lot of experimental research, and it’s exciting to see it plays out in the real world,” says Elizabeth,a professor of psychology at Temple University, who led the study.“Praising the efforts, actions and work of the kid is going to be more beneficial in their long-term persistence and work hard in the future.”

Such “process praise” includes comments such as “You worked really hard” or “You’re doing a great job,” which emphasize the child’s actions.“Person praise” includes comments like “You’re so smart” or “You’re so good,” which focus on a child’s inherent qualities. These distinctions aren’t new in the field of psychology, but exactly how they affect children’s development over the years hasn’t been clear.

As part of the study, researchers visited the homes of more than 50 toddlers between the age of 1 and 3 years old,and filmed their daily interactions with their parents during multiple 90-minute sessions.Five years later, the researchers followed up with the families, using questionnaires to measure the children’s attitudes toward challenges and problem solving. The children who grew up with more process praise were more open to challenge, and could identify more ways of overcoming difficult problems. While person praise didn’t seem to have any negative effect on the children, process praise teaches children that their talents and abilities can be developed and improved, while person praise sends the message that their abilities are fixed and therefore not easily changed.

【1】Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A.Praising inspires kids to form good personal quality.

B.Praising kids is tested to be effective in the long run.

C.The process of praising kids experiment is suspected.

D.The praising experiment is carried out in real situation.

【2】The underlined word “distinctions” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to .

A.condition B.differences

C.exception D.appearance

【3】From the last paragraph we can learn that .

A.kids should not be praised too frequently

B.different kids should be praised differently

C.process praise is less effective as we expected

D.kids with process praise tend to be more creative

【4】What is the main purpose of the passage?

A.To introduce a better way to praise kids.

B.To compare two different praising ways.

C.To predict the result of process praising.

D.To report the way of praising experiment.

Teenage years can be confusing for both teenagers and parents. At about 15, many teens start thinking about how they feel about themselves and out how this matches or mismatches what others think of them. Most teens work through this by the age of 16 or 17.

Often teenagers are treated like bigger children, but they will never become and responsible if they are not allowed to make some decisions for themselves. If parents forbid their children from doing something, chances are that they will do it without permission anyway. Brazil has become one of the developing worlds great successes in reducing population growthbut more by accident than design. While countries such as India have made joint efforts to reduce birth rates,Brazil has had better result without really trying, says George Martine at Harvard.

Brazils population growth rate has dropped from 2.99% a year between 1951 and 1960 to 1.93% a year between 1981 and 1990,and Brazilian women now have only 2.7 children on average.Martine says this figure may have fallen still further since 1990,an achievement that makes it the envy of many other Third World countries.

Martine puts it down to,among other things, soap operas and installment(分期付款)plans introduced in the 1970s.Both played an important, although indirect, role in lowering the birth rate.Brazil is one of the worlds biggest producers of soap operas.Globo,Brazils most popular television network, shows three hours of soaps six nights a week, while three others show at least one hour a night. Most soaps are based on wealthy characters living the high life in big cities.

Although they have never really tried to work in a message towards the problems of reproduction(生育),they describe middle and upper class valuesnot many children, different attitudes towards sex, women working, says Martine. They sent this message to all parts of Brazil and made people realise other patterns of family life and other values, which were put into a very attractive package.

Meanwhile, the installment plans tried to encourage the poor to become consumers. This led to change in consumption(消費(fèi))patterns and consumption did not get along well with unlimited reproduction, says Martine.

【1】The underlined phrase puts it down to is closest in meaning to .

A.considers the cause of it to be

B.finds it a reason for

A.they keep people sitting long hours watching TV

B.they have gradually changed peoples way of life

C.people are drawn to their attractive package

D.they make birth control measures popular

【3】What is Martines conclusion about Brazils population growth?

A.The increase in birth rate will increase consumption.

B.The desire for consumption helps to reduce birth rate.

C.Consumption patterns and reproduction patterns are contradictory.

D.A countrys production is limited by its population growth.

【4】Which is the best title of the passage?

A.Brazil:the developing worlds success

A.India have reduced birth rates by accident, too

B.many other Third World countries are suffering a population growth rate now
