Carrots are easy to raise and easy to harvest. They taste good. 【1】

When people think of carrots, they usually picture in their mind a vegetable that is long, thin and orange. 2 And not all carrots are orange. For example, Paris Market carrots are about five centimeters around. Rome carrots are thin and about twenty-five centimeters long. And Belgian White carrots are, as their name suggests, white.

For the best results, carrots should be grown in sandy soil that does not hold water for a long time. The soil also should have no rocks. To prepare your garden for carrots, dig up the soil, loosen it and turn it over. Then, mix in some plant material or animal fertilizer (肥料).

3 Experts say warm days, cool nights and a medium soil temperature are the best conditions for growing carrots that taste great.

Carrots need time to develop their full sugar content. This gives them their sweetness if you wait too long to pull them from the ground. 4 Usually, the brighter the color, the better the taste.

5 If the winter is not cold enough to freeze the ground, you can grow and harvest carrots the same way as during the summer months. If the ground does freeze, simply cover your carrot garden with a thick layer of leaves or straw. This will prevent the ground from freezing.

A. But carrots come in many different sizes and shapes.

B. They are economic crops.

C. The best time for planting carrots is during the winter months.

D. Weather, soil conditions and age will affect the way carrots taste.

E. The best way to judge if a carrot is ready to be harvested is by its color.

F. And they contain a lot of carotene (胡蘿卜素), which the body make into vitamin A.

G. Many people do not know that carrots can be grown during the winter months.

I can’t swim so I have a strong fear of water. Look back at my childhood, I think that three reasons might explain fear. Firstly, I am not allowed to go near the water when I was a child, as my mother had an unreasonable fear of it. Therefore, I was taught to see to the water as something danger. Secondly, my eyes became bad when I was five. If I took off my glass in the water, I couldn’t see something, and this increased my fear. What’s worse, for a child I once saw a neighbor drowned. Since then I have been more frightening.

There is distinction between reading for information and reading for understanding.【1】 .

The first sense is the one in which we read newspapers, magazines, or anything else.【2】 Such materials may increase our store of information, but they cannot improve our understanding. And clearly we don’t have any difficulty in gaining the new information, for our understanding was equal to them before we started.Otherwise, we would have felt the shock of puzzlement.

The second sense is the one in which we read something that at first we do not completely understand. Here the thing to be read is at the first sight better or higher than the reader. The writer is communicating something that can increase the reader’s understanding.【3】 Otherwise one person could never learn from another. Here “l(fā)earning” means understanding more, not remembering more information.

What are the conditions in this kind of reading? First, there is inequality in understanding.【4】 Besides, his book must convey something he possesses and his potential readers lack.Second, the reader must be able to overcome this inequality in some degree. And he should always try to reach the same level of understanding with the writer. If the equality is approached, success of communication is achieved.

【5】 It is the least demanding and requires the least amount of effort.Everyone who knows how to read can read for entertainment if he wants to.In fact, any book that can be read for understanding or information can probably be read for entertainment as well.

B.Such communication between unequals must be possible.

C.We can get access to the content of those materials easily.

How to get teenagers to read

Getting teenagers to read sounds like a hard task. The latest Xbox or PSP has got them addicted, or the homework seems to last forever. 【1】 Here is a guide on how to get your teenagers to read.

2 You could look at their school homework timetable and work out which evening they have the least amount of work to do. Make sure that your teenager is not going to an out-of-school club that evening.

Buy your teenagers a new set of books. Research the book lists for teenagers. The Chaos Walking Trilogy and The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy are suited for both boys and girls. If your teenager will never sit down to read a book, consider buying them an electronic reader like an Amazon Kindle Paperwhite to encourage them to read. Make sure that the electronic reader you buy can only be used to read. 3

Seize opportunities. If they seem unimpressed then whenever you see them not doing anything constructive, encourage them to pick up one of the books you bought. If they say they don’t want the book then take them out to buy some in a bookstore. 4

Consider punishments. 5 This doesn’t work for everyone but some people find that when your teenager messes up, you can tell them to go to their room and read. They might start to really enjoy the book.

A. Don’t be afraid of wasting money.

B. Electronic readers are harmful to teenagers’ eyesight.

C. Figure out what time is best for your teenager to read.

D. If they still refuse then you could use reading as a punishment.

E. But getting them to pick up a book is a lot easier than it sounds.

F. You’re sure to pick out a book that they really want to read there.

G. You know they could pretend to read and actually play video games.
