【題目】Two traveling angels (天使) stopped to spend the night in the home of a wealthy family. The family was rude and refused to let the angels stay in the guest room. Instead the angels were given a space in the cold basement. As they made their bed on the hard floor, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and repaired it. When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied “Things aren’t always what they seem.”

The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very poor but very hospitable (好客的) farmer. After sharing what little food they had, the couple let the angels sleep in their bed where they could have a good night’s rest. When the sun came up the next morning, the angels found the farmer and his wife in tears. Their only cow, whose milk had been their only income, lay dead in the field.

The younger angel was very angry and asked the older angel, “How could this happen?” “Why didn’t you watch out for the cow? The first man had everything, yet you watched over his house,” she accused(指責(zé)). “The second family had little but was willing to share everything, and you did not help.”

“Things aren’t always what they seem,” the older angel replied. “When we stayed in the basement, I noticed there was gold stored in that hole in the wall. Since the owner was so greedy and unwilling to share his good fortune, I asked God if I could seal(封口)the wall so he couldn’t find it. 【題目】If you put all the books you own on the street outside your house, you might expect them to disappear immediately. But one man, Hernando Guanlao in Manila, tried it and found that his collections grew.

He’s a lovely man in his early 60s, with one ever-lasting love—books. They’re his pride and joy, because, whether he likes it or not, they seem to be taking over his house. Guanlao has set up a “l(fā)ibrary” outside his home in central Manila. Readers can take as many books as they want, for as long as they want. As Guanlao says, “The only rule is that there are no rules.”

You might consider it would end very quickly. But in fact, in the 12 years he’s been running his library. He’s found that his collection has grown rather than become smaller, as more and more people help the activity. “It seems to me that the books are speaking to me,” he says with a smile, “The books are telling me they want to be read.”

Guanlao started his library in 2000, shortly after the death of his parents. He was looking for something to honor their memory, and that was when he hit upon the idea of promoting the reading habit passed on to him from his parents. So he put the books outside the door of his house to see if anyone wanted to borrow them. They did, and they brought the books back with others to add to the collection. The library was born. The library is not advertised, but somehow, every day, a steady stream of people find their way there.

To help the poorest communities in Manila, Guanlao doesn’t wait for them to find him on his “book bike”. He wants to set up a “book boat”, traveling around the islands of Sulu and Basilan. As we sat outside Hernando Guanlao’s house in the midday sun, watching people look through his collection, he thought it was worth spending all his time.

【5】What is the last paragraph mainly talking about?

【題目】A warm drink of milk before bed has long been the best choice for those wanting a good night’s sleep. But now a study has found it really does help people nod off — if it is milked from a cow at night.

Researchers have discovered that “night milk” contains more melatonin (褪黑激素), which has been proven to help people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety.

The study, by researchers from Seoul, South Korea, involved mice being fed with dried milk powder made from cows milked both during the day and at night.

Those given night milk, which contained 10 times the amount of melatonin, were less active and less anxious than those fed with the milk collected during daytime, according to the study published in The Journal of Medicinal Food.

Night milk quickened the start of sleep and caused the mice to sleep longer.

While the effect of cows’ milk harvested at different time has not been tested on humans up to now, taking melatonin drugs has been suggested to those who are struggling to fall asleep at night.

Previous studies have also indicated that milk can be excellent for helping sleep because of the calcium content, which helps people to relax.

Milk is also sugar-free and additive-free with nutritionists recommending skimmed milk as the best choice before bed as it is the least fattening. The more fat you take in before bedtime, the greater burden you will put on your body at night.

1According to the text, the mice fed with daytime milk_______.

A. started sleep more easily B. were more anxious

C. were less active D. woke up later

A. It’s been tested on mice for ten times. B. It can make people more energetic.

C. It exists in milk in great amount. D. It’s used in sleeping drugs.

3What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. Night Milk and Sleep B. Fat, Sugar and Health

C. An Experiment on Mice D. Milk Drinking and Health

4How does the author support the theme of the text?

A. By giving examples. B. By stating arguments.

C. By explaining statistical data. D. By providing research results.

Making Peace with Your Parents

As a teen, you’re going through big changes physically and mentally. Your interests are increasing. 【1】 . Here is the challenge: Kids need to explore the world in new ways, and parents need to protect them from the dangers that are all out in that world. These conflicts can easily set off fireworks in otherwise calm houses. Sometimes conflicts can’t be avoided. For instance, try to find a time to talk when your parents are not angry, tired, distracted or hungry. A good time to talk is when you’re all relaxed. Timing is everything.
