【題目】 Children born in the early 21st century will likely never know a world without the Internet, television, and other forms of instant intellectual satisfaction. The average high school student in any developed nation has access to more information than some of the greatest minds in history, such as Socrates or Da Vinci, ever had in their lifetimes. Some critics of this phenomenon fear that instantaneous(瞬時(shí)的)access to all of this information has the potential to overload users, however. Instead of researching deeper into one particular subject, many people are now dabbling on(淺嘗)the surface of many interests and subjects of study at the same time. Author Richard Foreman described those who have spread themselves thinly across a wide range of subjects as pancake people.

For many generations, scholars and artists tended to concentrate their energy on one particular subject. For William Shakespeare, that interest was literature; for Mozart, it was musical composition; and for Newton, physics. Visual artists were not expected to understand higher mathematics, nor were philosophers (哲學(xué)家)expected to study engineering. Without widespread access to libraries or the ability to spread their latest creations to the rest of the world instantly, many people worked hard in relative obscurity(冷門)to explore the depths of their chosen jobs or subjects of interest.

With the development of the Internet and other sources of information that can be accessed quickly and easily, many people attempt to gain at least a working knowledge of many different subjects. As a result, a new generation have essentially become the proverbial jacks of all trades, but masters of none. A linguist(語(yǔ)言學(xué)家)from the 18th may have studied Spanish or French until he or she could translate even the most complex literary works written in those languages, but modern pancake people only learn enough of the language to travel as a tourist. As long as the information necessary to perform a task or create a new work is at a person’s fingertips, there is always the risk of that person losing some intellectual curiosity.

1What can we know from the first paragraph?

A.People nowadays have access to more information than before.

B.Interest is becoming more and more important in modern society.

C.Children will know nothing about the world without modern social media.

D.Students in developed nations know more than the greatest minds in history.

2How does the author develop his argument in Paragraph 2?

A.By comparison.B.By example.

C.By classification.D.By cause and effect.

3Pancake people refer to those who___________________.

A.are gifted in music, art or literature

B.are knowledgeable in different fields

C.know a working knowledge of many different subjects

D.tend to concentrate their energy on one particular subject

4What’s the author’s attitude to pancake people?

A.Disapproving.B.Favorable.

C.Doubtful.D.Unconcerned.

【題目】 Heads up! Across the country, sports injuries are a safety concern for young athletes. Now, the American Medical Association (AMA) has a new set of guidelines aimed at protecting players from the danger of concussions- serious injuries caused by a blow to the head.

“By raising awareness of the serious risks associated with concussions and ensuring that the appropriate guidelines are in place, we can reduce the number of young athletes who may return to the game too soon, which can put their health at further risk,” said AMA Board Member Jack Resneck Jr, MD, in a statement.

The policy recommends that young athletes who may have a concussion be taken off the field as soon as possible. Then, they are only to return to their sport with a doctor 's written approval. The policy also sets age-specific rules for health care professionals and athletic organizations in evaluating and caring for concussions.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury (外傷性腦損傷) caused by a bump, or jolt to the head or hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. This type of movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist inside the skull (顱骨). It can damage brain cells and create chemical changes in the brain.

The CDC says that between 1.6 million and 3.8 million traumatic brain injuries caused by sports and recreation-related activities occur in the U.S. every year. A study from the Center for Injury Research and Policy showed that as many as 40% of high school athletes return to playing before they should. The AMA' S new guidelines should help to bring those numbers down.

【題目】 In the United Statesthe baby boomer generation(嬰兒潮一代) include those who were born in the time after World War II. Those babies have retired or are now reaching the retirement age. As these adults age, many of their adult children worry about how to take care of their aging parents. In the United States it is not common for several generations to live under one roof. Once children grow up and get married, they move out, leaving their aging parents to care for themselves. When these aging parents can no longer take care of themselves because of age or illness, it is not uncommon for adult children in the US to place their elderly parents in a nursing home.

A nursing home is a place that offers care for the elderly and ill. As the name suggests, nursing homes have professionals including nurses, doctors and social workers to help aging adults deal with the challenges of daily life. And their mental health could be guaranteed for elderly people to get relaxed, accompanied by those of the same age. Most nursing homes also have social activities for the elderly to participate in and keep active. These activities range from games to dance classes, and movie nights. Nursing homes are supposed to provide three nutritious meals for their residents.

Nursing homes are controversial, however. There have been cases across the country of staff in nursing homes treating the elderly residents badly and even robbing them. There are different states and federal agencies that are supposed to oversee(監(jiān)管) nursing homes. Some people feel that it should be the responsibility of family members, especially adult children, to care for their aging or sick parents. However, many adult children have their own children and families to take care of, and do not have the means to care for their elderly parents; others worry about medical skills needed if their elderly parents are seriously ill. 【題目】 Bats are the only mammals that can fly a great distance, but they have another ability. Many bats live a very long time for an animal of their size. European researchers are studying bats to understand why they live so long. They hope to make discoveries aimed at fighting the aging process in human beings.

Last week, the group of scientists said they had identified important biological qualities in some bat species. The group studied the bats’ chromosomes (染色體), a line of genes found in the nucleus of cells. The scientists were most interested in structures connected to the ends of the chromosomes. They are called telomeres (端粒), which protect the ends of chromosomes and shorten each time a cell divides. Scientists believe this shortening process causes cells to break down. They say this is what cause aging.

The European researchers studied 493 bats from four bat species. The group used information that had been gathered over more than 60 years. Of these animals, the greater mouse-eared bat generally lived the longest, an average of 37 years. The scientists said this and a related species, which are grouped together under the name Myotis, had telomeres that did not shorten with age. Another Myotis bat holds the record for the oldest age, reaching 41 years. The scientists’ findings suggest that these bats’ cells have the ability to maintain and repair their telomeres. This helps guard against the aging process.

Based on its body size, a bat like the greater mouse-eared bat would be expected to live four years. But, these mammals have been found to live nearly 10 times longer than that. The scientists found that only 19 species of mammals live longer than humans when their body size is considered. Eighteen of these are bats.

1Why are European researchers studying bats?

A.To learn the similar habits between bats and human beings.

B.To find out why the greater mouse-eared bats live a long life.

C.To try to understand why bats prefer to fly during the night.

D.To discover a good way to prevent human beings from aging.

2What does the second paragraph mainly explain to us?

A.The structures of the bats’ chromosomes.B.What causes aging biologically.

C.The functions of telomeres.D.What causes cells to break down.

3Why do the greater mouse-eared bat and another Myotis bat live so long?

A.They are grouped together under the name Myotis.

B.Their telomeres are decreasing with age.

C.Their cells are able to keep up and fix their telomeres.

D.They have more telomeres than human beings do.

4What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.Bats live 10 times longer than other mammals.

B.Bats enjoy the longest life among mammals.

C.The greater mouse-eared bat and other bats should have lived longer.

D.Many bats live longer than human beings considering their body size.
