完形填空(共20小題;每小題2分,滿分40分)
It’s good to make mistakes, and here is why.
First of all, mistakes are a clear  36 that you are trying new things. It’s always   37  to try new things because when you are trying new things you are   38 .If you never try anything new, how can you   39 ? The simple answer is “You can’t”.With few exceptions, every single detail of development is the   40 of someone trying something new.
When you are making mistakes, you are  41  .Edison failed 10,000 times before he   42  the light bulb. When asked how it felt to  43  that many times, he said that he hadn’t failed 10,000 times, but rather had learned 10,000 things that didn’t  44
Finally, when you make a mistake you are much   45  to success. Why ?
When all is done, you will have tried some number of things before you succeed.  46  you make a mistake you eliminate (排除) one of those things and are one step closer.
But this all doesn’t mean that you should go ahead   47  considering the consequences of a mistake.Quite the contrary, when you try something new, you   48   be willing to set some reasonable limits, so that in the event that it doesn’t   49  the way you want it to, you will be in a position to try again.
We all have   50  resources in time and money, so don’t blow them all on one   51  to a problem.Realize that it probably won’t be perfect the first time, and allocate (分配)  these resources properly so you can learn,   52   corrections, and try it again.Only by  53    and using your mistakes in this way, can you make significant  54   in your business or career
As an old saying goes, “If you’re not making mistakes, you’re not trying hard enough.”
So go  55  and make mistakes.And learn.And grow.And succeed.

"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me."
You probably heard those lines in grammar school, but do you really agree that harsh (嚴(yán)厲的) or negative words do not harm us? Words have power. Surely we all have had our feelings hurt by something someone said.
We may not say words to hurt others, but the way we interpret (解釋) them and how we say them may cause great harm. Here’s an example:
An ancient king dreamed all his teeth had fallen out. He sent for a wise man to explain his dream to him: the dream means that all your relatives will die and you will be left alone!
The king was very angry and threw the interpreter into prison. He then sent for another interpreter who said, "Congratulations! King! You will live many more years. In fact, you will survive all your relatives. Long Live the King!"
Both interpreters gave the same interpretation, but there was a huge difference in the way they said it.
Our speech must be understood by those who hear our words, but the way we say things and the intention behind them have as much power as the words themselves. Words can cause anger or appreciation. Which would you rather receive?
People who say harsh and negative things may not mean to harm, but have you ever known anyone who is a naysayer? They often look at the dark sides of things. They always see the glass as half empty rather than half full. How do you feel when you are around this type of person? Remember words have power. Use them wisely.

A.By sharing different life experiences
B.By accepting different habits.

I think that the most basic and powerful way to connect to another person is to listen. Just listen. Perhaps the most 36 thing we ever give to each other is our attention (注意力). Especially if it’s 37  from the heart. When people are talking, there’s no need to do 38  but receive them. Listen to what they’re saying. Care about it. Most times  39   about it is even more important than understanding it.
One of my patients told me that when she tried to tell her story, people often 40     to tell her that they once had something just 41  that happened to her. Her pain became a story about 42 . So, finally she stopped 43  to most people because she just felt too lonely. When we interrupt what someone is 44  to let them know that we understand, we 45  the  focus of attention to ourselves. But if we just 46 , they know we care. Many people with cancer can talk about the relief (寬慰) of having someone just listen.
I have 47  learned to respond to someone crying by just listening. I 48  that passing a person a tissue (面巾紙) may be just another 49  to shut them down and take them out of their experience of 50 . Now I just listen. When they have 51  all they need to cry, they find me there with them.
This 52  thing has not been that easy to learn. It certainly went against everything I had been taught since I was very 53 . I thought people listened only 54   they were too shy to speak or did not know the 55 . A loving silence often has far more power to heal than words.

As I write this, I have half an eye on an old James Bond film that is showing on my computer. But this is a story about how I stopped watching TV and began reading again for pleasure, after ten years in which I hardly turned a page.
I suppose I was an enthusiastic reader of "literature" between the ages of nine and fourteen. I had enough time to be White Fang, Robinson Crusoe, and Bilbo Baggins and Jeeves. Of course there was room in the schoolboy's imagination for some real historical figures: Scott of the Antarctic, all of the Vikings, and Benjamin Franklin were good friends of mine.
Then, in adolescence, I began a long search for strange and radical (激進(jìn)的) ideas. I wanted to challenge my elders and betters, and shock my fellow students with amazing points of view. Of course, the only place to look was in books. I hunted out the longest titles and the authors with the funniest names; I searched the library for completely unread books. Then I found one which became my bible for the whole of 1982, it had a title composed of eleven long words and an author whose name I didn't know how to pronounce. It was really thick and looked dead serious. Even better, it put forward a whole world-view that would take days to explain. Perfect. I took it out of the library three times, proud to see the date-stamps lined up on the empty library insert.
Later, I went to university. Expecting to spend long evenings in learned discussion with clever people, I started reading philosophy. For some reason I never found the deep-thinking intellectuals I hoped to meet. Anyway, I was ready to impress with my profound (深奧的) knowledge of post-structuralism, existentialism and situationism. These things are usually explained in rather short books, but they take a long time to get through. They were the end of my youthful reading.
Working life was hard to get used to after so much theory. It was the end of books for me. There didn't seem to be much in books that would actually get things done. To do things you had to answer the telephone and work a computer. You had to travel about and speak to people who weren't at all interested in philosophy. I didn't stop reading, you can't avoid that. I read all day. But no books came my way, only manuals (操作手冊) and contracts and documents. Maybe most people satisfy their need for stories and ideas with TV and, to tell the truth, it was all I needed for ten years. In those days I only had a book "on the go" for the duration of aeroplane flights. At first I would come home and watch TV over dinner. Then, I moved the TV so I could watch it from bed. I even got a switch so I could turn it off without getting out of bed. Then, one fateful day, my TV broke and my landlady took it away.
My new TV is an extra circuit board (電路板) inside my computer. It's on a desk in front of a working chair and I can't see it from the bed. I still use it for the weather forecasts and it's nice to have it on while I'm typing this… but what to do last thing at night? Well, have another go with books.
Now, I just like books. I have a pile of nice ones by my bed and I'm reading about six at the same time. I don't want to be any of the characters. I don't care if a thousand people have already read them. I don't have to search through libraries. There are books everywhere and all of them have something to read in them. I looked at my beautiful Christmas tree and sighed. It was time. The New Year was a week old and my tree still stood in the corner of our room with its collection of memories proudly displayed in a shower of colorful lights. I’d procrastinated(拖延,耽擱)long enough.
I got up, went to the garage and dragged all the boxes into the room. The garland(花環(huán))was the first to come down. The tree looked naked(光禿禿的)already. I took the large ornament(裝飾物)off next. They made a large pile on our bed. An hour later, our bed was covered with Christmas memories. Each pile contained an ornament along with its matching brothers and sisters from sets purchased many years ago.
I prepared the boxes and carefully placed ornaments in their protective packaging, pausing every few minutes to admire a favorite. “Hey, little Santa!” I held the Santa from my childhood. “Thanks for being my friend for almost fifty years.” He was a little ragged but still gives me a flood of wonderful memories. “Until next year, my dear friend.”
There was a collection of handmade ones. My children made in the their first years of school, more than twenty years ago. Made by tiny hands, they are far from perfect in design, but every year they go on my memory tree-memories of young giggles(咯咯地笑)on Christmas morning and a smiling face when they handed them to me when I came home from work. “Look what we made, Daddy!”
“Oh! It is beautiful. Let’s find a special spot on the tree for it.” Every year since, they are displayed.
A few hours after I started, the filled boxes were back in the garage, the room was vacuumed(用吸塵器清掃)and I sat staring at a barren(空蕩蕩的)corner. The room seemed so empty. It took me two days of work to assemble(收集)and decorate my tree, but only a few hours to take it apart.
My tree is like a good marriage or a great friendship. Like the tree, they take a long time to assemble and decorate with memories, but can be torn down quickly.
Every year I have to put my tree away, but not my marriage or friendships. I take great care of those. They get to glow in the corner of my life for as long as I live. I get to analyze my tree and find memories for a few weeks every year. I can do the same with the loves in my life every day. Take great care of your friendships and your marriage. Once they come down, they aren’t as easy to put back together as a Christmas tree. Stand them in that special spot in the corner of your heart and admire their glow.
