I didn't realize that Sam had stood up next to me until he turned, took my face in his little hansd and said,"Dance with me".
If onLy those women walking under the Paris moon knew the joy of such an invitation made by a round-cheeked boy with baby teeth.A I though shoppers openly chucked(咯咯笑)and pointed at us as we glided(滑步)and whirled around the open space,I would not have traded a dance with such a charming young gentleman if I'd been offered the universe.

10.Goldie's Secret
She turned up at the doorstep of my house in Cornwall.No way could I have sent her away.No way,not me anyway.Maybe someone had kicked her out of their car the night before."We're moving house";"No space for her any more with the baby coming.""We never really wanted her,but what could we have done?She was a present."People find all sorts of excuses for abandoning an animal.And she was one of the most beautiful dogs I had ever seen.
I called her Goldie.If I had known what was going to happen I would have given her a more creative name.She was so unsettled during those first few days.She hardly ate anything and had such an air(樣子) of sadness about her.There was nothing I could do to make her happy,it seemed.Heaven knows what had happened to her at her previous(以前的) owner's.But eventually at the end of the first week she calmed down.Always by my side,whether we were out on one of our long walks or sitting by the fire.

3.Writing articles about films for The Front Page was my first proper job.Before then I had done bits of reviewing-novels for other newspapers,films for a magazine and anything I was asked to do for the radio.That was how I met Tom Seaton,the first arts editor of The Front Page,who had also written for television.He hired me,but Tom was not primarily a journalist,or he would certainly have been more careful in choosing his staff.
At first,his idea was that a team of critics should take care of the art forms that didn't require specialized knowledge:books,TV,theatre,film and radio.There would be a weekly lunch at which we would make our choices from the artistic material that Tom had decided we should cover,though there would also be guests to make the atmosphere sociable.
It all felt like a bit of dream at that time:a new newspaper and I was one of the team.It seemed so unlikely that a paper could be introduced into a crowded market.It seemed just as likely that a millionaire wanted to help me personally,and was pretending to employ me.Such was my lack of self-confidence.
Tom's original scheme for a team of critics for the arts never took off.It was a good idea,but we didn't get together as planned and so everything was done by phone.It turned out,too,that the general public out there preferred to associate a reviewer with a single subject area,and so I chose film.Without Tom's initial push,though,we would hardly have come up with the present arrangement,by which I write an extended weekly piece,usually on one film.
The space I am given allows me to broaden my argument-or forces me,in an uninteresting week,to make something out of nothing.But what is my role in the public arena?I assume that people choose what films to go to on the basis of the stars,the publicity or the director.So if a film review isn't really a consumer guide,what is it?I certainly don't feel I have a responsibility to be‘right'about a movie.Nor do I think there should be a certain number of‘great'and‘bad'films each year.All I have to do is put forward an argument.I'm not a judge,and nor would I want to be.

63.What do we learn about Tom Seaton from the first paragraph?C
A.He encouraged the writer to become a writer.
B.He met the writer when working for television.
C.He had worked in various areas of the media.
D.He prefers to employ people that he knows.

A.help the writers get to know each other
B.distribute the work that had to be done
C.provide an informal information session
D.entertain important visitors from the arts
65.What does the author mean when he says that Tom's plan never took off in Paragraph 4?D
A.Tom's plan was unpopular.
B.Tom's plan wasted too much time.
C.Tom's plan wasn't planned properly.
D.Tom's plan wasn't put into practice.
66.Which of the following best describes what the writer says about his work?A
A.He can freely express his opinion.
B.He prefers to write about films he likes.
C.His success varies from year to year.
D.He writes according to accepted rules.

20.Special trees that grow faster, fight pollution, produce better wood, and even sense chemical attacks are being planted by scientists in the US.
When 40 per cent of Hawaii's US 14 million-a-year papaya (木瓜)industry was destroyed by a virus five years ago, work began on creating genetically engineered (轉(zhuǎn)基因的) trees.
Researchers successfully introduced seeds that were designed to resist the virus.Since then, more and more people have been testing genetically engineered trees.
Some researchers put special bacteria into trees to help them grow faster and produce better wood.Others are trying to create trees that can clean polluted soil.
Meanwhile fruit farmers are looking for trees that are strong enough to resist worms, and paper companies want trees that produce more wood and therefore more paper.
The Pentagon (五角大樓) even gave the researchers US 500,000this year after they developed a pine tree that changes its colours if it senses a chemical attack.
So far,the poplar, eucalyptus (楊樹(shù)與桉樹(shù)),apple and coffee trees are among those being engineered. All this can be done today because we have a better understanding of tree genomes (基因組).
However, some people fear that the genetically engineered trees will cause dangerous results. They are worried that the new trees will breed with natural species and change the balance of the forest environment
"It could be destructive,"said Jim Diamond,an environmentalist."Trees are what is left of our natural environment and home to many endangered species."
But researchers insist that science could give nature a fighting chance against both natural and man-made dangers.
They hope to answer the critics by stopping the new trees from breeding,so their effect on the environment can be controlled.
57.Which kind of tree is not the ones that scientists are planting in the US?C
A.Trees that worms can't hurt.
B.Trees that can protect themselves at a chemical attack.
C.Trees that can resist wind better.
D.Genetically engineered trees.
58.What caused the American scientists to work on special trees?B
A.They think science could give nature a fighting chance against both natural and man-made dangers.
B.Great numbers of trees have been lost due to attacks by viruses.
C.Researchers successfully introduced seeds designed to resist the virus.
D.Tree genomes are mapped out so scientists know how to improve trees.
59.Which of the following was probably the first kind of trees being engineered?A
A.Papaya.B.Pine.C.Apple.D.Poplar.
60.Why did critics think engineered trees dangerous?BecauseD.
A.these trees can destroy the balance of nature
B.everything except trees has been genetically engineered
C.trees are home to many endangered species
D.these trees may affect normal trees.
