One of my wonderful memories is about a Christmas gift. Unlike other gifts ,it came without wrap(包裝). On September 11, 1958, mum gave birth to Richard. After she brought him home from hospital, she put him in my lap(大腿), saying, “I promised you a gift, and here it is .” What an honor! I turned four a month earlier and none of my friends had such a baby doll of their own. I played with it day and night. I sang to it. I told it over and over how much I loved it!
One morning, however, I found its bed empty. My doll was gone! I cried for it. Mum wept and told me that the poor little thing had been sent to a hospital. It had a fever. For several days, I heard mum and dad whispering such words as “hopeless”, “pitiful”,and “dying”, which sounded ominous.
“Christmas was coming, don’t expect any presents this year ”Dad said, pointing at the socks I hung in the living room. I’d never seen him cry before.
The phone rang early on Christmas morning. Dad jumped out of bed to answer it. From my bedroom I heard him say.” What? he’s all right?” he hung up and shouted upstairs. “The hospital said we could bring Richard home! ”
“Thank god!” I heard Mum cry.
From the upstairs window, I watched my parents rush out to the car. I had never seen them so happy. And I was also full of joy. What a wonderful day! My baby doll would be home. I ran downstairs. My socks still hung there flat. But I knew they were not empty: they were filled with love!

小題1:細(xì)節(jié)題:從第二段第一句“On September 11th ,1958,Mum gave birth to Richard.”,我們可以看出作者的弟弟誕生了。這個弟弟并非是真正的doll洋娃娃,這點同學(xué)們千萬要讀懂。選A。
小題2:猜詞題:ominous本意是“不吉利的;兇兆的”,這道題就要考查考生們的理解能力了。作者當(dāng)時還是個孩子, “For several days I heard Mum and Dad whispering such words as “hopeless”, “pitiful”, and “dying””,在他幼小而懵懂的心里,這些詞是有一定的驚嚇作用的。

Two traveling angels stopped to spend the night in the home of a wealthy family. The family was rude and refused to let the angels stay in the guest room. Instead the angels were given a space in the cold basement. As they made their bed on the hard floor, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and repaired it. When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied: Things aren’t always what they seem.
The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very poor, but very hospitable(好客的)farmer and his wife. After sharing what little food they had,the couple let the angels sleep in their bed where they could have a good night’s rest. When the sun came up the next morning, the angels found the farmer and his wife in tears. Their only cow, whose milk had been their only income, lay dead in the field.
The younger angel was very angry and asked the older angel, “How could this happen?” “Why did you not watch out for the cow? The first man had everything, yet you watched over his house,” she accused. “The second family had little but was willing to share everything, and you did not help.”
“Things aren’t always what they seem,” the older angel replied. “When we stayed in the basement,I noticed there was gold stored in that hole in the wall. Since the owner was so greedy and unwilling to share his good fortune,I asked God if I could seal(封口) the wall so he wouldn’t find it. My favorite English teacher could draw humor out of the driest material. It wasn’t forced on us either. He took Samuel Johnson’s dictionary, Addison’s essays, and many other literary wonders from the eighteenth century and made them hilarious, even at eight o’clock in the morning. The thing that amazed me most was that the first time I read these works on my own, some of them seemed dead, but the second time, after his explanation, I couldn’t believe that I hadn’t seen the humor. The stories and poems and plays were suddenly filled with allusions(典故) and irony and hilarious moments. I learned more from him than from any other teacher.
My least favorite English teacher also made people laugh. Some students found him to be wonderfully funny. Many others did not. He assigned journals over a six-week period, to be written every day. At the end of the six weeks I had a notebook full of bits and pieces about my ideas, short stories, reactions to what we had read, and so on. Our teacher announced that we would be grading each other’s journals. Mine was passed to Joe, that class clown, who always behaved in a funny or silly way. He saw it fit to make a joke of and said, “This writing isn’t fit to line the bottom of a birdcage.” Our teacher laughed at that funny remark. It hurt me so much that the anger from it has driven my writing and teaching ever since.
So what makes the difference? Humor is one of the most powerful tools teachers or writers have. It can build up students and classes and make them excited about literature and writing, or it can tear them apart. It is true that humor is either productive or counter-productive and self-defeating.
小題1:The passage mainly discusses ________.
A.teachingB.literatureC.humorD.knowledge
小題2:The underlined word “hilarious” in Paragraph 1 probably means ________.
A.funnyB.tiringC.inspiringD.brilliant
小題3:The English teacher the writer disliked most ________.
A.was not able to make students laughB.hurt his student’s feelings
C.didn’t let his students do the gradingD.had no sense of humor

Everyone wants some degree of success. Many people believe that they deserve success simply because they believe that they deserve success.
But there is a widespread belief that people who get on in life may be successful not because they deserve it, but because of influential (有影響的)  friends or the right background. Sometimes it may just be a comforting and harmless belief, while at the other extreme it can be very destructive. I once met a brilliant young engineer who worked in a chemical plant. Because of her knowledge and experience, she should have been promoted to Production Manager. Instead, the job went to a man who was totally unsuited for the post. Everyone knew that he only got it because he was politically acceptable to his superiors (上司). This injustice discouraged the young engineer and many of her colleagues. It also meant that the factory was much less efficient than it could have been.
At the same time, we should not be pessimistic (悲觀的). More and more the modern world depends on having people who are in the job because they are good enough, not just because their faces fit. There is a story of a factory owner who sent for an engineer to see to a machine which would not go. He examined it, then took out a hammer and tapped, once. The machine started up immediately. When he presented his bill, the owner protested, "This can't be right! $ 100 just for tapping a machine with a hammer?" The engineer wrote out a new bill: "For tapping a machine, $1; for knowing where to tap. $99."
小題1:The engineer at the chemical plant was not promoted because _____.
A.it was politically less good for the boss to accept her than the man
B.her boss did not think she had the fight qualifications for the job
C.the man who got the promotion was more experienced than she was
D.it is more difficult for a woman to get a promotion than for her male colleague
小題2:The engineer who repaired the machine was right in charging $ 100 because____.
A.he hit the machine to get it started again
B.the factory owner could not have repaired it himself
C.he was charging for his knowledge and expert skills
D.he was the only person who could find out what was wrong with it
小題3:What can we learn about the author's attitude toward the widespread belief that "people get on in life may be successful not because they deserve it"?
A.He quite agrees with it.
B.He doesn't express his opinion his opinion at it.
C.He completely disagrees with it.
D.He doesn't quite agree with it.
小題4:According to the text, which of the following is NOT true?
A.Having influential friends or right background seems helpful sometimes.
B.The engineer had good reason to overcharge the factory owner.
C.Not all those who are good in their jobs have the chance to be promoted.
D.Those who are good in their jobs are still largely needed by the modern society.

Not long ago, a rock band called the Backstreet Boys made a big splash on the music scene. Young people everywhere loved their songs. One of the band’s biggest fans was a young boy named Aaron Carter. Aaron had a special reason for taking such an interest in the band. Nick Carter, one of the Backstreet Boys, was Aaron’s big brother.
Even before Nick joined the band in 1996, Aaron loved music. From the age of two, Aaron spent most of his time listening to the radio. He sang along with his favorite songs. He made up dances to go with them. So Aaron’s family was not surprised when Aaron decided to follow Nick into the music world.
Aaron got off to a fast start. At the age of seven, he joined a band in his hometown of Tampa, Florida. But after two years, Aaron didn’t want to be part of a band anymore. He wanted to sing alone. Soon, Brother Nick gave Aaron a helping hand. During a Backstreet Boys show in Germany, Aaron sang a song. He did an amazing job!
