A newspaper reporter’s job can be very interesting. He meets all types of people and lives quite a busy life. He is on the rush for news all the time, then after several years he may get a desk job, and life becomes a bit more settled. Let’s look at his work a little more closely. In a day he may have to interview the prime minister of a foreign country, and the next day he may be writing about a football match. Sometimes he may be so busy that he has hardly any time to sleep. And at other times he may go on for days looking out for news materials yet return empty-handed.
In the beginning, a reporter has to cover a very wide field. After the early years he becomes more specialized in his work. For example, he may finally be asked to write only on court cases or politics or sports. Some reporters may become so specialized that they are asked only to write on a special thing: horse racing, for example. In most newspaper houses there is at least one special racing correspondent. Some newspapers have book reviews. Their job is delightful. They read the latest book and then write reviews on the ones they like. Then there are those who write on films, so they get to see them even before they are shown in the cinema. How lucky, you would say!
A reporter’s job can also be very dangerous. A number of them have died rushing from one assignment to another, and if there is a flood or a riot(暴亂) they may get hurt or even be killed. Three years ago there was a reporter whose camera was smashed by a group of men, because they were angry with him for taking their picture. Dangerous or not, one thing is certain, and that is, their job is never dull!

Scientists have proved that sleeping and learning go hand in hand. Even a short nap can boost our memory and sharpen our thinking. But the relationship goes deeper than that.
“The brain is not passive while you sleep,” scientist Anat Arzi said. “It’s quite active. You can do many things while you are asleep.”
Arzi and her coworkers didn’t try to teach the sleeping volunteers any complex information, like new words or facts. Instead, the scientists taught volunteers to make new connections between smells and sounds.
When we smell something good, like a flower, we take deep breaths. When we smell something bad, we take short breaths. Arzi and her co-workers based their experiment on these reactions.
Once the volunteers fell asleep in the lab, the scientists went to work. They gave them a whiff of something pleasant and meanwhile played a particular musical note. They didn’t wake up, but they heard—and sniffed(吸氣) deeply. Then the scientists gave the volunteers a whiff of something terrible and played a different musical note. Again, the volunteers heard and smelled—a short snort this
time—but didn’t wake up. The researchers repeated the experiment.
After just four repetitions, volunteers made a connection between the musical notes and their paired smells. When the scientists played the musical tone that went with good smells, the sleepers breathed deeply. And when the scientists played the musical tone that went with bad smells, the sleepers breathed briefly—despite there being no bad smell.
The next day, the volunteers woke up with the sound-smell connection. They breathed deeply when hearing one tone and cut their breaths short when hearing the other, which must have been unusual for them. Imagine walking down the street and taking a deep breath upon hearing a particular sound!
小題1:In the study, the volunteers were taught _______.
A.to become active during sleep
B.to tell the difference between smell
C.to learn new words and scientific facts
D.to make sound-smell connections
小題2: How did the volunteers react when smelling something nice and hearing musical notes?
A.They took a deep breath.B.They had a wonderful dream.
C.They woke up at once.D.They took a short breath.
小題3: When the volunteers woke up the next day, they_______.
A.learned how to play to musical tones
B.forgot what happened during their sleep
C.continued with the sound-smell connection
D.changed their reaction when hearing.
小題4:The passage mainly tell us______
A.special smells and sounds can improve our memory.
B.our brain can actually learn something new during the sleep.
C.the volunteers will always hear similar sounds in the street.
D.our brain can tell the difference between smells during the sleep.
小題5:Which of the following is NOT true?
A.A short sleep can improve our memory and sharpen our thinking.
B.Arzi and her coworkers didn’t try to teach the sleeping volunteer some simple information.
C.When the volunteer smelt something terrible, they didn’t wake up.
D.After four repetitions, volunteers made a connection between the musical notes and their pared smells.

There are many ways to find a job. It can be as easy as walking into a neighborhood store to look at the announcement board. Local stores often have areas where people can put small signs telling what kind of service they need or can provide. Such services include caring for children or cleaning houses.
Or, job searchers can look in the newspaper. Local newspapers have employment announcements placed by companies seeking workers.
Another popular tool for finding jobs is the Internet. For example, people in four hundred and fifty cities around the world can use the Craigslist Web site to buy objects, meet people or find a job. Craigslist says that it receives two million new job listings each month.
Another useful way to find a job is through a college or a university. For example, students at the University of Texas in Austin can go to the Career Exploration Centre to get help in finding a job. Of course, looking for a job requires knowing what kind of work you want to do. For example, there is a book called “What Color is Your Parachute(降落傘)?”by Richard Bolles. This book has been helping people choose a career since it was published in nineteen seventy.

What is a good education? The question is far from being answered. Once more, colleges and universities are changing their programs: they drop "fun courses" and restart some of the traditional subjects neglected (忽視) since the 1960s. Many great schools are again requiring the students to take a number of classes in English, history, literature, the social sciences, philosophy, the natural sciences, and art if they want to get a degree. Meanwhile, the experts are trying to describe the good education of our time. Obviously the purely vocational training once favored is not enough. But neither is the gentleman's education of the nineteenth century. Educational programs must meet the demands of a modern world where men and women have to work and to deal with big problems.
What, then, is a good education of this century? Some educators suggest that it should include foreign languages and the study of foreign cultures; a mastery of English, including the ability to write and speak well, because communications have become all-important in the modern world, and also because "a person who doesn't speak and write clearly doesn't reason clearly either"; some knowledge of the social sciences (sociology, psychology) that deal with human relations and human problems; some basic knowledge of modern science, which would enable future voters to be better informed about current problems like nuclear. Finally, many educators insist that all college graduates should be familiar with computers and modern information system since the educated professionals of tomorrow will have to understand their machines. Is that all? "No, of course not." answer the educators. "We have not mentioned the two great building blocks of education: history and literature!"
小題1:The best title for this passage might be _______.
A.EducationB.A Mastery of English
C.A Good EducationD.Something About Study
小題2:The underlined word "drop" in the first paragraph means _______.
A.desertB.dislikeC.declineD.neglect
小題3:The author thinks that the question about what a good education is _______.
A.has been answered fairly well
B.hasn't been put forward yet
C.has been dealt with successfully
D.has not been answered satisfactorily
小題4:Some educational experts believe a mastery of English should include the ability _______.
A.to read fastB.to write and speak well
C.to write clearly and accuratelyD.to listen and speak skillfully

In bringing up children, every parent watches eagerly the child's acquisition (學會) of each new skill -- the first spoken words, the first independent steps, or the beginning of reading and writing. It is often tempting to hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set up dangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child. This might happen at any stage. A baby might be forced to use a toilet too early, a young child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though, if a child is left alone too much, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural enthusiasm for life and his desire to find out new things for himself.
Parents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may be especially strict in money matters. Others are severe over time of coming home at night or punctuality(準時)for meals. In general, the controls represent the needs of the parents and the values of the community as much as the child's own happiness.
As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency(前后一致) is very important in parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation for morality (道德). Also, parents should realize that "example is better than precept". If they are not sincere and do not practice what they preach (說教), their children may grow confused when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to some extent fooled.
A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents' principles and their morals can be a dangerous disappointment.
小題1:Eagerly watching the child’s acquisition of new skills, _________________.
A.should be avoided
B.is universal among parents
C.sets up dangerous states of worry in the child
D.will make the child lose interest in learning new things
小題2:In the process of children’s learning new skills, parents _________________.
A.should encourage them to read before they know the meaning of the words they read
B.should expect a lot of the children
C.should achieve a balance between pushing them too hard and leaving them on their own
D.should create as many learning opportunities as possible
小題3:The second paragraph mainly tells us that _________________.
A.parents should be strict with their children
B.parental controls reflect only the values of the community
C.parental restrictions vary, and are not always for the benefit of the children alone
D.it’s parents’ and society’s duty to control the children
小題4:The word“precept” in Paragraph 3 probably means “_________________”.
A.opinion B.punishmentC.behaviorD.instruction
小題5:In terms of moral matters, parents should _____________________.
A.follow the rules themselves
B.be aware of the huge difference between adults and children
C.forbid things which have no foundation in morality
D.always ensure the security of their children

US universities are among the best in the world. Since World War Ⅱ, American scientists --- mostly working in universties or colleges --- have won more than half of all Nobel Prizes in physics and medicine. Foreign students rush to the United States by the tens of thousands. Last year they earned more than one quarter of the doctoral degrees awarded in the country. Yet while American universities produce the great research and great graduate program, they sometimes pay little attention to the task that lies at their very core: the teaching of undergraduate students.
With the increase in fees, educators feel obliged to improve undergraduate teaching. In speeches and interviews the nation’s higher educators have rediscovered teaching. Robert Rosenzweig, president of the Association of American Universities,  said,  “Our organization was never very concerned about teaching. In the last 18 months, we have spent more time on undergraduate education than on any other subject.”
Despite such promising efforts, no one doubts that research still outranks teaching at some of the leading universities, not least because it is a surer and faster way to earn status. Some people don’t think it has to be that way. They argue that the reward system for college faculty can be changed, so that professors will be encouraged to devote more time and effort to teaching. They say that they are beginning to believe that the first ten years of the 21st century may come to be remembered as the decade of the undergraduate.
That would bring it full circle. For more than two centuries after the founding of Harvard College in 1636, the instruction of undergraduate students was an essential condition of American higher education.
小題1:According to the passage, at some of the leading American universities ________.
A.research is declining in importanceB.teaching now ranks above research
C.teaching is a sure way to gain positionD.research still ranks above teaching
小題2:It is implied in the passage that about 200 years ago undergraduate instruction ________.
A.began to change all of a sudden
B.was already threatened by research work
C.was the central part of higher education
D.began to be neglected in most universities
小題3:What would be the best title for the passage?
A.University education in the USB.University education challenged
C.Teaching and research in universitiesD.Undergraduate teaching rediscovered

How to Stay Motivated in High School
Do you find it difficult, almost impossible to stay motivated about high school? There are so many demands on your time, along with the expectation of parents and teachers. You really want to look at all the “big picture”. Your time in high school is likely to be just a small part of your whole life.    小題1:
Set realistic goals and rewards. It can be as simple as doing your work and then taking a break to do something you like.    小題2:   It isn’t as though you have to do all of your work at one time. In other words, when you reach a good break point, give yourself some kind of reward such as doing something you enjoy and afterwards get back to work.
小題3:  Consider your own parents, teacher, neighbor, or relative—anyone you respect and trust that can be in your corner to root for you and cheer you on. You want someone who has some life experience to counsel you. If you can find more than one source of such wisdom, it is all the better. Don’t ignore this suggestion. It can really save you a lot of heartbreak and suffering later on.
Have supportive friends. There are people who are going nowhere fast.    小題4:   Instead, stay around other motivated students who enjoy school, study and work hard because they are so positive. That positive influence will help motivate you.
Work with yourself not against. We all have energy levels.    小題5:  If your levels are low, determine what raises your energy levels to get you going. Then get as much done as you can. Also, don’t wait until later to get started doing things like your homework. One student explained that he would start work at the end of the class. Then when he got home, he was finishing the work rather than just starting the work.
A.Then get back to work.
B.Don’t hang out with them.
C.Seek the wisdom of an elder.

Scientists have transformed men’s minds into a virtual(虛擬的)woman’s body in an experiment that could throw light upon how humans distinguish themselves form others.
In a study at Barcelona University, men wore a virtual reality headset that allowed them to see and hear the world as a female character. When they looked down, they could even see their new body and clothes.
The “body-swapping” effect was so convincing that the men’s sense of self was transferred into the virtual woman, causing them to react to events in the virtual world they were immersed(沉浸). “This work opens up another avenue for virtual reality, which is not just to transform your sense of place, but also your sense of self,” said Mel Slater, “If you can temporarily give people the illusion that their bodies are different, then the evidence suggests it also affects their behavior and the way they think. They can have new experiences: a person who is thin can know what it is like to be fat. A man can have an experience of what it’s like to be a woman.”
During the experiment, a “female” approached and hit the face of the character another man was playing. “Their reaction was immediate,” said Slate. “They would take in a quick breath and maybe flinch(退縮). The more people reported being in the girl’s body, the stronger physical reaction they had.” But in all cases, the feeling was temporary and lasted only as long as the study.
The study shows that our minds have a very fluid picture of our bodies. The research is expected to shed light on the puzzle of how our brain tells the difference between a part of our own body and something else in the wider world. Thus the work might improve the conditions for those who have experienced strokes by placing them in a world that helps them to use their bodies to the full again.
小題1:How can a man’s mind get into a woman’s body?
A.by distinguishing themselves from women
B.by taking part in an activity actively
C.by wearing a special device(設備)
D.by transforming his sense of place
小題2:Of the following statements, which we can’t infer from the passage?
A.Men in the experiment can temporarily have the wrong feeling that they are women.
B.When hit, the men in the virtual world will react angrily to it.
C.As soon as the experiment is finished, the men will return to the normal state
D.Probably, this study can be applied to medical fields and benefit humans.
小題3:What is the author’s intention of writing this passage?
A.to introduce an interesting and advanced study
B.to inform us of the latest development of virtual reality
C.to illustrate the importance of virtual reality
D.to build up our confidence to fight stroke
