【題目】Reducing the amount of salt in our diets could save nearly 20,000 lives in the UK every year, according to researchers.

The recommended maximum daily intake for adults is 6g in the UK, although just month the World Health Organization (WHO) revised this down to 5g. Yet according to figures from the British Heat Foundation, men consume around 9.7g a day, while women have 7.7 g.

Fast food

Salt Content

Original chicken

2.9g per portion (份)

Spicy crayfish

3.5g per portion

Large chips

1 per portion

McDonalds Big Mac

2.1 per portion

Not researchers at three universities, including Harvard Medical School, have revealed the dramatic effect reducing salt could have on death rates by using computer models. They estimated that reducing salt intake to 6g would save 500,000 to 850,000 lives in the US over the next decade.

British doctor Ian Campbell, medical director of charity Weight Concern, told Mail Online: Salt is a big problem in the UK, too. Its a silent killer. Over time consuming too much of it increases the risk of high blood pressure, which can lead to heart attacks. About 80 percent of our salt intake comes from processed foods, so it can be difficult to avoid.

Many people are unaware of where salt is hidden, such as bread, soups, ready meals, and even breakfast cereals (麥片). The government approach has been to encourage food companies to cut the amount of salt in their products. There has been a reduction but it is taking too long. The Food Standards Agency should consider setting compulsory maximum levels for salt.

Victoria Taylor, Senior Dietitian at the British Heat Foundation, added: Eating too much salt may raise your blood pressure and having high blood pressure increases your risk of developing heart disease.

The government has worked with the food industry to reduce the amount of salt in our food and make labels clearer. But there is still work to be down by everyone because the majority of Brits are still consuming more salt than they would be.

【1】Which of the following in the table reaches the daily maximum amount of salt recommended by the WHO?

A. A large chips and a McDonalds Big Mac.

B. A spicy crayfish and a large chips.

C. An original chicken and a spicy crayfish.

D. A McDonalds Big Mac and an original chicken.

2According to the passage, when people eat processed food they ________.

A. neednt add salt

B. should add a little salt

C. may ruin their health

D. can have risk of heart attacks

3To solve the problem of eating too much salt, Ian Campbell advises ________.

A. having healthier breakfast

B. punishing the illegal food companies

C. reducing the amount of processed food

D. making laws about maximum levels for salt

4The last paragraph emphasizes the importance of ________.

A. making food tables clearer

B. monitoring the food industry

C. promoting the awareness of salt content

D. strengthening the governments functions

【題目】James Cleveland Owens was the son of a farmer and the grandson of black slaves. His family moved to Cleveland when he was 9. There, a school teacher asked the youth his name.

“J.C.”, he replied.

She thought he had said “Jesse”, and he had a new name.

Owens ran his first race at age 13. After high school, he went to Ohio State University. He had to work part time so as to pay for his education. As a second-year student, in the Big Ten games in 1935, he set even more records than he would in the Olympic Games a year later.

A week before the Big Ten meet, Owens accidentally fell down a flight of stairs. His back hurt so much that he could not exercise all week, and he had to be helped in and out of the car that drove him to the meet. He refused to listen to the suggestions that he give up and said he would try, event by event. He did try, and the results are in the record book.

The stage was set for Owens' victory at the Olympic Games in Berlin the next year, and his success would come to be regarded as not only athletic (體育的) but also political. Hitler did not congratulate any of the African-American winners.

“It was all right with me,” he said years later. “I didn't go to Berlin to shake hands with him, anyway.”

Having returned from Berlin, he received no telephone call from the president of his own country, either. In fact, he was not honored by the United States until 1976, four years before his death.

Owens' Olympic victories made little difference to him. He earned his living by looking after a school playground, and accepted money to race against cars, trucks, motorcycles, and dogs.

“Sure, it bothered(煩擾) me,” he said later. “But at least it was an honest living. I had to eat.”

In time, however, his gold medals changed his life. “They have kept me alive over the years,” he once said. “Time has stood still for me. That golden moment dies hard.”

【1】In the Big Ten meet, Owens __________.

A. hurt himself in the back

B. succeeded in setting many records

C. tried every sports event but failed

D. had to give up some events

【2】 We can infer from the text that Owens was treated unfairly in the US at that time because __________.

A. he was not of the right race

B. he was the son of a poor farmer

C. he didn't shake hands with Hitler

D. he didn't talk to the US president on the phone

【3】When Owens says “They have kept me alive over the years,” he means that the medals __________.

A. have been changed for money to help him live on

B. have made him famous in the US

C. have encouraged him to overcome difficulties in life

D. have kept him busy with all kinds of jobs

【4】Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

A. How to Be a Successful Athlete?

B. Golden Moment—a Life-time Struggle

C. Making a Living as a Sportsman

D. Jesse Owens, a Great American Athlete

【題目】 If you go to Ethiopia, you’ll find a strange palm-like structure, which is called WarkaWater. It gathers water from fog and condensation(水珠)and is invented by an Italian firm.

When Italian designer Arturo Vittori and Swiss architect Andreas Vogler first visited Ethiopia in 2012, they were shocked to see women and children forced to walk miles to access what, for them, had always been within easy reach, water.

Only 34 percent of Ethiopians have access to a reliable water supply. Some travel for up to six hours a day to fetch some or, even worse, has to use pond water polluted by human waste, subject to the spread of disease.

Worldwide, about 768 million people—two and a half times the U.S. population—don’t have access to safe drinking water. So just imagine if we could just pull water out of thin air? That’s what Vittori and Vogler asked once they saw the severe problem and promised to take action. Their firm, Architecture and Vision, has since come up with WarkaWater, a grand palm-like structure that may look like something you’d see in a modern art museum, but it’s been designed to harvest water from the air.

WarkaWater, which is named after an Ethiopian fig tree, is composed of a 30-foot bamboo frame containing a fog-harvesting nylon net that can catch water easily, can be easily lowered for repairs and allow communities to measure the water level. Collecting water through condensation is hardly a new technique, but the creators of WarkaWater say their tree-inspired design is more effective, maximizing surface and perfecting every angle to produce up to 26 gallons of drinkable water a day—enough for a family of seven.

Western organizations have been working to provide clean water access in Africa for decades, so WarkaWater joins a very long list of earlier attempts. So far, high-tech solutions, like the once promising Playpump, have failed, mostly due to high costs and maintenance issues.

This is where WarkaWater stands apart—a lower-tech solution that is easy to repair and far more affordable than digging wells in the rocky Ethiopian plateau.

【1What does the underlined phrase “subject to” in the third paragraph most probably mean?

A. Owing to B. Opposite to

C. Sensitive toD. Giving rise to

【2WarkaWater is designed mainly to ______.

A. gather clean water efficiently

B. reduce water supply costs

C. simplify maintenance

D. preserve water supplies

【3According to Paragraph 6, what caused Playpump to fail?

A. Lack of advanced technology

B. Unsuccessful designs

C. Lack of money and maintenance issues

D. Unreasonable structures

【題目】Will Nanfang University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen announce a new beginning for Chinas higher education reform? Its too early to answer. But its presence is challenging the Ministry of Education. Even without the approval of the ministry it seems that the school is determined to move forward and enroll 50 students, so-called child prodigies(奇才), to begin classes on March l, 2011.On graduating in 2015, these students will receive a diploma unauthorized by the Ministry of Education----unlike the students of their age from the state-run universities.

The school is committed to modeling itself on Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, but if the government will not approve the school, the situation could cause a lot of trouble for those 50 students if they want to do graduate studies at other higher learning institutions. The difficulties, however, have not frightened students and their parents away. On Dec.18, 2010 more than 1,000 students and their parents visited Nanfang University of Science and Technology for interviews.

Private investment marks the school out from other higher learning institutions in the nation. Not a penny comes from the government. So the government will have no voice in how the school will be run.

The Ministry of Education has published a comprehensive plan for education reform and development between 2011 and 2020.The goal is to make Chinas higher education internationally competitive. To accomplish this goal, the government should have the courage to let the educators who have big ideas try them out. The ministry should have applauded the independence. The school in Shenzhen has shown and encouraged more to do likewise.
