【題目】James Cleveland Owens was the son of a farmer and the grandson of black slaves. His family moved to Cleveland when he was 9. There, a school teacher asked the youth his name.

“J.C.”, he replied.

She thought he had said “Jesse”, and he had a new name.

Owens ran his first race at age 13. After high school, he went to Ohio State University. He had to work part time so as to pay for his education. As a second-year student, in the Big Ten games in 1935, he set even more records than he would in the Olympic Games a year later.

A week before the Big Ten meet, Owens accidentally fell down a flight of stairs. His back hurt so much that he could not exercise all week, and he had to be helped in and out of the car that drove him to the meet. He refused to listen to the suggestions that he give up and said he would try, event by event. He did try, and the results are in the record book.

The stage was set for Owens' victory at the Olympic Games in Berlin the next year, and his success would come to be regarded as not only athletic (體育的) but also political. Hitler did not congratulate any of the African-American winners.

“It was all right with me,” he said years later. “I didn't go to Berlin to shake hands with him, anyway.”

Having returned from Berlin, he received no telephone call from the president of his own country, either. In fact, he was not honored by the United States until 1976, four years before his death.

Owens' Olympic victories made little difference to him. He earned his living by looking after a school playground, and accepted money to race against cars, trucks, motorcycles, and dogs.

“Sure, it bothered(煩擾) me,” he said later. “But at least it was an honest living. I had to eat.”

In time, however, his gold medals changed his life. “They have kept me alive over the years,” he once said. “Time has stood still for me. That golden moment dies hard.”

【題目】You say you’re old enough to stay out late on weekends while they say you have to be home early.1You say you’ve met some nice kids and you’d like to go out with them, but they say they’d like to see your friends first.

When you’re a teenager, it seems that every time you say “I want to”, they will certainly answer “No, you can’t.” Also, no part of your life is safe from the “prying eyes” of your parents. 15-year-old Debbie says, “My dad always wants to know where I am, what time I’m going to be home. Most parents do that. Do they have to know everything?2

3When something goes wrong, most parents just don’t believe in their children. Without asking why, they think their kids are wrong. And not many parents would allow their kids to choose for themselves.

4But remember that not too long ago you were really a child. Your parents still remember the childish mistakes you used to make. They want to protect you though you do not want them to do so. And when something seems to threaten your well-being, they worry.

So, if you want to get more freedom, please try to understand your parents and do not just lie.5If you want them to allow you to stay out late, don’t just say, “All the other kids can stay out late.” Tell them as much as you can about what you want to do and where you’ll be and why it’s important for you to stay out later ..., they might just say yes.

AYes, it is true that your parents sometimes treat you like a small child.

BNo one likes being troubled.

CTry a more friendly way.

DThey should give us more freedom.

E. Young people further complain that their parents do not respect them.

F. You say you want to see that new film while they say you can’t see it.

G. They are willing to give you advice on your friends.

【題目】The day I was given the news was a cold Saturday. My mom sat me on the floor and opened her mouth to give me the most words I'd ever heard: “Grandma Billie has been diagnosed with cancer.” Tears filled my eyes immediately. Mom continued, “Grandma is old and her body is too . There’s nothing they can do to treat her.” I knew this wasn't my mom’s fault but I was so . I was almost yelling at my mom, “So, they’re just going to let her ?”

We had to just wait for her to die. I couldn't even the thought. We went to the hospital right away. The doctor said, “Billie has a tumor in her . She won't be able to because it hurts her too much. One option is a feeding tube, but there are times when it will be uncomfortable.” At the end, the doctor sighed, “With a feeding tube, she would probably have three at most.”

My whole family on my mom’s side was really and they were all looking to God to make this easy. I couldn't handle it. If God was so wonderful and so then why did he allow all these awful things to happen to good people? Why was he letting my grandma die?

I came and visited every day after practice. Grandma would tell me the stories over and over again, but every time I was just as surprised and excited to hear them. She was getting really fast and every tme I came to see her it broke my heart more.

3 weeks later, after the softball practice, I was getting ready to see grandma when mom appeared in the locker room. She opened her mouth but at first no words came out. She again, “You can’t go to see grandma today because she just died.” Silence. I couldn’t anyone else in the room. Mom sat next to me and we both held each other and cried.

【題目】Sparrow is a fast-food chain with 200 restaurants. Some years ago, the group to which Sparrow belonged was taken over by another company. Although Sparrow showed no sign of declining, the chain was generally in an unhealthy state. With more and more fast-food concepts reaching the market, the Sparrow menu had to struggle for attention. And to make matters worse, its new owner had no plans to give it the funds it required.

Sparrow failed to grow for another two years. Until a new CEO, Carl Pearson, decided to build up its market share. He did a survey, which showed that consumers who already used Sparrow restaurants were extremely positive about the chain, while customers of other fast-food chains were unwilling to turn away from them. Sparrow had to develop a new promotional campaign.

Pearson faced a battle over the future of the Sparrow brand. The chains owner now favored rebranding Sparrow as Marcys restaurants. Pearson resisted, arguing for an advertising campaign designed to convince customers that visits to Sparrow restaurants were fun. Such an attempt to establish a positive relationship between a company and the general public was unusual for that time. Pearson strongly believed that numbers were the key to success, rather than customers speeding power. Finally, the owner accepted his idea.

The campaign itself changed the traditional advertising style of the fast-food industry. The TV ads of Sparrow focused on entertainment and featured original songs performed by a variety of stars. Instead of showing the superiority of a specific product, the intension was to put Sparrow in the hearts of potential customers.

Pearson also made other decisions which he believed would contribute to the new Sparrow image. For example, he offered to lower the rent of any restaurants which achieved a certain increase in their turnover (營業(yè)額).

These efforts paid off, and Sparrow soon became one of the most successful fast-food chains in the regions where it operated.

【1Which was one of the problems Sparrow faced before Pearson became CEO?

A. The number of its customers was declining

B. Its customers found the food unhealthy

C. It was in need of financial support

D. Most of its restaurants were closed

【2What does the underlined word them in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A. customers of Sparrow restaurants

B. Sparrow restaurants

C. customers of other fast-food chains

D. other fast-food chains

【3For what purpose did Pearson start the advertising campaign?

A. To build a good relationship with the public.

B. To stress the unusual tradition of Sparrow.

C. To learn about customers spending power.

D. To meet the challenge from Marcys restaurants.

【4What was Pearsons achievement as a CEO?

A. He managed to pay off Sparrows debts.

B. He made Sparrow much more competitive.

C. He helped Sparrow take over a company.

D. He improved the welfare of Sparrow employees.
