We lived in a very quiet neighborhood. One evening I heard a loud crash in the street. 36 that evening my wife had asked me to go to the store to get some soft drinks. It seemed like this would be a good time to let my teenage daughter Holly 37  her driving, so I sent her to the store in my truck.
At dinner my son talked about how much he liked my  38 . I enjoyed having it, but I said: “Guy, my heart is not set on that truck. I like it but it is just metal and won’t last forever. Never set your heart on anything that won’t last.
After hearing the loud noise, the whole family ran outside. My son shouted: “ Dad! Dad, Holly crashed your truck.”
My heart sank and my mind was 39 with conflicting thoughts. Was anyone hurt? Who else was involved? As I ran to the door, I heard a voice in my heart say: “Here is a chance to show Holly 40  you really love. She’ll never forget it.”
The accident had occurred in my own driveway. Holly had crashed my truck into our other vehicle, the family van (搬運(yùn)車(chē)). In her inexperience, she had  41 _the brakes and the gas pedal. Holly was unhurt  42  but when I reached her, she was crying and saying:“Oh, Dad, I’m sorry. I know how much you love this truck.” I held her in my arms as she cried.
Later that week a friend stopped by and asked what had happened to my truck. I told her the whole story. Her eyes moistened(濕潤(rùn)) and she said: “That happened to me when I was a girl. I borrowed my dad’s car and  43 a log that had fallen across the road. I ruined the car. When I got home my Dad knocked me to the ground and began to kick me.”
Over 40 years later, she still felt the pain of the night. It was a deep wound on her  44 .
I remember how sad Holly was the night she crashed our truck, and how I comforted her. One day, when Holly  45  on her life, I want her to know that I love her a thousand times more than any piece of  46 .
I repaired the van, but the dent(凹陷) in my truck is still there today. Every day it reminds me of what really 47  in my life.

Twenty-six years after a terrible bicycle accident left her comatose(昏迷) for two months and with permanent brain injuries, Barbara Buchan, performs many actions more slowly than others. But on September 10 in Beijing, Buchan, at 52, the oldest member of the United States Paralympic team, broke the record and won the gold medal for her disability class in the individual 3,000-meter cycling pursuit.
“You can be very upset at the world and have everyone take care of you,” Buchan said by telephone from Beijing, “or get back on your feet again.”
Buchan first dreamed of Olympic gold at age 15 while watching the 1972 Munich Games. She became a top American cyclist by July 1982, when a terrible road-race crash injured her brain and left doctors doubtful about whether she would survive. She was wearing only a soft leather helmet at the time; her accident made the rule put into practice that cyclists wear the hard-shell helmets that are now common.
Buchan recovered enough of her athletic ability to run track in the 1988 Paralympics in Seoul, where she won a silver medal in the 800 meters. Women’s cycling was not included in the Paralympics yet, so Buchan trained to the point where she raced against men in the 2000 Paralympics in Sydney, Australia — she finished 9th and 10th in two races — and then successfully fought for a separate women’s cycling program beginning in 2004 in Athens, where she did not get a medal.
Even though she was approaching her 50s, Buchan kept racing and again made the United States Paralympic team for Beijing — where she is twice the age of most of her teammates and competitors.
“Barbara’s almost the leader of our team — she’s been through it all,” said Craig Griffin, the United States cycling coach. “She’s never retired. She’s never let her body go and then come back. I don’t think age is as big of a deal as people make it out to be.”

If you want your life to stand for peace and kindness, it’s helpful to do kind, peaceful things. One of my  16 ways to do this is by developing my own 17 actions. These little acts of kindness are  18  to be of service and reminders of how good it feels to be  19  and helpful.
We live in a rural area of the San Francisco Bay Area. Tomorrow was his girlfriend’s birthday and the young man was having a difficult time deciding on a present for her. She already had more clothes than she knew what to do with them, so he couldn’t get any kind of apparel. She never ate sweets, so candy was out of the question. What then? He had a very special reason for wanting to impress her with just the right gift; tomorrow he was going to make an offer of marriage to her.
He finally decided on perfume(香水). All girls liked perfume. That raised another problem, however. What kind did she prefer? He couldn’t ask her because that would ruin the surprise.
At last the young man hit upon a brilliant idea. That afternoon, pretending to take his girlfriend’s fox terrier, a little dog for a walk, the young man and the dog went directly to the perfume counter of the town’s biggest department store. Good! There was a large array (長(zhǎng)列) of perfume. He beckoned(招呼) a clerk, instructing her to open a large number of bottles and wave the stoppers under the dog’s nose.
Nestled in the young man’s arms, the terrier began to be restless and bored as this seemingly pointless game went on. Then Fritz suddenly became frisky, wiggling in the young man’s arms and barking excitedly, as the clerk waved one stopper under its nose.
“I’ll take that one,” said the young man to the clerk. The price was high, but it was worth it, he thought.
“My favorite perfume!” said the delighted girl the next evening as she unwrapped the package. “How did you know?” she asked, dabbing some perfume behind each ear.
“Intuition(直覺(jué)), I guess.” said the young man, deciding that it wasn’t exactly wrong to tell a lie under the circumstances. One day, after they were married, he would admit that his intuition had really been a little dog named Fritz.

With long brown hair, deep blue eyes, a tall and thin figure(身軀) Brad Pitt seems to be a born actor. He made his first appearance in a film in 1990.Though he was in the film for only 14 minutes, people flooded the cinema to see him.In his next film Pitt played the role of a fisherman. To make the film better, he learned the skill of fishing from a fisherman.
Pitt, caring more about roles than money, has a special favor for the “hard” roles. After reading the screenplay(劇本) of “Legends of the Fall”, he was attracted by the leading character. He asked for a lower pay from the shooting team and was willing to work in hard conditions in the Rocky Mountains for six months.“The film gives the chance to know life.I shall always remember the time when we were making the film,” Pitt said after completing it fully.
Pitt started his dream of art when he was in university.Though born in a common family in 1964, he showed his interest in film at an early age. After leaving high school, he went to university to study law.Because he loved film more than law, shortly before he could graduate, he dropped out for a life of his own, with only 325 dollars in hand, sometimes as a porter or a waiter. Thanks to his hard work, he finally opened up a new field of his own.
