【題目】Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked

A,B,C and D. Fill in each blank with a word or phrase that best fits the context.

When I was in high school, I didn’t know anything about engineering. At that time, when the car I drove needed repairing, I was afraid to take it to the . Because honestly, the mechanic could have me an electric can opener and said, “This is part of your car and it’s -----pay me to fix it.” Then I wouldn’t have known any better.

At the end of my junior year of high school, I heard about a summer program to interest girls in engineering. The six-week program was free, and students were college credits and a dorm room at the University of Maryland. I applied to the program, not because I wanted to be an engineer, but because I was looking forward to and wanted to stay away from my parents for six weeks.

I was accepted to the program and I earned six engineering credits. The next year I entered the university as an engineering student. Five years later I had a degree and three good job offers.

I can’t help shaking I hear about studies that show women are when it comes to math. They imply that I am a little stupid. I’m not, but I know that if I hadn’t met with that summer program, I wouldn’t be an engineer.

When I was growing up, I was told, as many students were, to do what I was best at. But I didn’t know what that was. Most people think that when you are something, it comes easily to you. But this is what I discovered: just because a subject is to learn, it does not mean you are not good at it. You just have to grit your teeth and work hard to get good at it. Once you do, there’s good that you will enjoy it more than anything else.

【題目】Many years ago, I made a living by driving a car. One night I went to pick up a passenger at 2:30 am. When I arrived to collect, I found the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window.

I walked to the door and knocked.“Just a minute,” answered a weak, elderly voice.

After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her eighties stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase.

I took the suitcase to the car, and then returned to help the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly towards the car.

She kept thanking me for my kindness.“It’s nothing,” I told her, “I just try to treat my passengers in the way I would want my mother treated.”

“Oh, you’re such a good man,” she said. When we got into the taxi, she gave me an address, and then asked, “Could you drive through downtown?”

“It’s not the shortest way,” I answered quickly.

“Oh, I’m in no hurry,” she said.“I’m on my way to a hospice(臨終醫(yī)院). I don’t have any family left. The doctor says I don’t have very long time.”

I quietly reached over and shut off the meter(計(jì)價(jià)器).

For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.

Sometimes she’d ask me to slow down in front of a particular building and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.

At dawn, she suddenly said, “I’m tired. Let’s go now.”

We drove in silence to the address she had given me.

“How much do I owe you?”she asked.

“Nothing,” I said.

“You have to make a living,” she answered.“Oh, there are other passengers, ”I answered.

Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly. Our hug ended with her remark, “You gave an old woman a little moment of joy.”

【題目】When milk arrived on the doorstep

When I was a boy growing up in New Jersey in the 1960s, we had a milkman delivering milk to our doorstep. His name was Mr.Basille. He wore a white cap and drove a white truck. As a 5-year-old boy, I couldn’t take my eyes off the coin changer fixed to his belt. He noticed this one day during a delivery and gave me a quarter out of his coin changer.

Of course, he delivered more than milk. There was cheese, eggs and so on. If we needed to change our order, my mother would pen a note-“Please add a bottle of buttermilk next delivery”and place it in the box along with the empty bottles. And then, the buttermilk would magically appear.

All of this was about more than convenience. There existed a close relationship between families and their milkmen. Mr. Basille even had a key to our house, for those times when it was so cold outside that we put the box indoors, so that the milk wouldn’t freeze. And I remember Mr. Basille from time to time taking a break at our kitchen table, having a cup of tea and telling stories about his delivery.

There is sadly no home milk delivery today. Big companies allowed the production of cheaper milk thus making it difficult for milkmen to compete. Besides, milk is for sale everywhere, and it may just not have been practiced to have a delivery service.

Recently, an old milk box in the countryside I saw brought back my childhood memories. I took it home and planted it on the back porch. Every so often my son’s friends will ask what it is. So I start telling stories of my boyhood, and of the milkman who brought us friendship along with his milk.

【1】Mr.Basille gave the boy a quarter out of his coin changer ________.

A.to show his magical power

B.to pay for the delivery

C.to please his mother

D.to satisfy his curiosity

【2】What can be inferred from the fact that the milkman had the key to the boy’s house?

A.He wanted to have tea there.

B.He was fully trusted by the family.

C.He was treated as a family member.

D.He was a respectable person.

【3】Why does home milk delivery no longer exist?

A.It has been driven out of the market.

B.Nobody wants to be a milkman now.

C.Its service is getting poor.

D.It is forbidden by law.

【4】Why did the author bring back home an old milk box?

A.He planted flowers in it.

B.He wanted to tell interesting stories.

C.He needed it for his milk bottles.

D.He missed the good old days.

【題目】I arrived late one night on a business trip, so I decided to have dinner in the hotel I stayed in. As I was finishing my meal, an elderly couple came in. They were holding hands and had lovely smiles on their faces. They sat three tables from me. I was amazed at the love they showed for each other. It struck me because it was shortly after ending a 20-year marriage and I still had pain in my heart.

My waiter was also their waiter. As I paid my bill, I asked what their bill was. He told me, and I gave him $40 to pay their bill. He asked if I knew them and I told him “No, I just wanted to repay them for the love that they were showing to each other,” and then I left. The next day I entered the restaurant again. After I had been seated, the waiter who served me the night before told me that the strangest thing happened after I left the restaurant. When the elderly couple went to pay for their meal, they were told that it had been paid. The waiter just told them what I said. They were amazed. They looked around, asked for the bill of two young couples who were seated together, paid their bill and left.

I smiled and ordered my meal. About 45 minutes later, I finished my meal and was about to head out, but my waiter was nowhere to be found. I explained to the hostess that I needed to pay for my meal and hurry to the airport. She smiled and explained that I would not have to pay, because she felt she should pay for my bill because of the joy brought to the faces of the elderly couple and the amazement of the young couples.

When I told her that they didn’t have to do that, she said with a smile “Love creates Love.”

The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meet, chat and go where weve never been before. But just as in face to face communication, there are some rules of behavior that should be followed when on line.

【1】 Imagine how youd feel if you were in the other persons shoes. For anything youre about to send, ask yourself, "Would I say this to the persons face?" If the answer is no, rewrite and reread. 【2】

If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct (本能) is to fire back in the same manner. But try not to do so. 【3】 If it was caused by a disagreement with another member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it. Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room.

【4】 Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someone makes a mistake, whether its a stupid question or an unnecessarily long answer, be kind about it. If its a small mistake, you may not need to say anything.
