I'm Harley Hill. I was chosen as a postman in the year 1983. I have been a postman for 23 years. I love my work very much and it's a fine life for me. Every week I work forty hours. I work from six o'clock in the morning to about two o'clock in the afternoon. The worst thing is being late in the morning. We handle 50,000 to 60,000 items a day. I deliver to probably 278 addresses. Some of them are from abroad.

I'm happy to see the smile on their faces when I give them a letter from home. I think if there is anything I don't like about the job, it's the snow and ice and especially dogs. I've been bitten about half a dozen times. I have got 3 years before I retire. I'm going to miss the job when I retire.

Question 1. How long does Mr. Hill have to work every day?

Question 2. What's the worst thing that can happen to the postman?

Question 3. What does Mr Hill think of his work?

Question 4. When will Mr Hill retire?

【題目】 I was taking in the breathtaking view from the top of Sydney Harbor Bridge when I sensed I was about to witness something even more dramatic right in front of me. Although we were all tied to lines running along the steel girders, a fellow climber called Mike had somehow managed to drop onto bended knee and turn to face his girlfriend, Wendy. I knew what was coming. “Wendy, will you marry me?” he asked. There was a quick smile and an attempted kiss and then a big beam. Mike had the answer he hoped for and all of us burst into a round of applause.

Apparently more than 2,000 couples have become engaged ( ) at the summit since 1998, when it became possible to climb it in organized tour groups. The bridge, perhaps the most recognized symbol of this beautiful city, opened in 1932. It's still the world's largest steel-arch bridge.

We returned to the fantastic view: the famous Sydney Opera House, ferries and sailboats making their way through the harbor, the city skyline — but I had to force myself to look down. We had climbed 1,423 steps to the top of the bridge and I didn't know whether to be delighted or scared.

Nicole Kidman has done it. So have Bruce Springsteen, Prince Harry and scores of other celebrities. But climbing to the top clearly isn't just for the rich and famous. On the contrary, Australian youngsters do it to celebrate their 12th birthdays. (You have to be at least 12 years old to do the climb.) A 100-year-old woman climbed it and told guides it was on her list of things to do before she died.

You can climb during the day, at twilight, or even after dark with headlamps. People climb in all weathers except when there's lightning in the area. In fact, over two million people have made the three-and-a-half-hour climb to the top of the famous bridge—an adventure that cannot be done anywhere else in the world on a bridge this big. That's probably why this climb has won a lot of tourism awards. Today, the climb is firmly on the "to-do" list for locals as well as tourists.

1What can we learn on the bridge is quite rare?

A.Getting engaged on the bridge is quite rare.

B.People climb the bridge on climbers’ age.

C.There are no limitations on climbers’ age.

D.Many famous people have done the climb.

2How did the author feel when he climbed to the top of the bridge?

A.Bored and tiredB.Fearful and confused

C.Excited and nervousD.Relived and relaxed

3What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage?

A.To introduce the popularity of the bridge.

B.To emphasize the importance of the bridge

C.To explain the functions of the bridge.

D.To describe the fantastic view from the bridge.

【題目】 Brian Hamilton’s life changed in a prison when he was accompanying his friend, Reverend Robert J. Harris, who often went to local prisons to do his work. During the visit, Hamilton started talking to one of the prisoners and asked what he was going to do when he got out.

“He said he was going to get a job,” Hamilton recalls(回憶). “I thought to myself, wow, that’s going to be difficult with a criminal background.”

The conversation made Hamilton consider how prisoners could benefit from entrepreneurship, something he thought about for years. Finally in 2008, 16 years after that initial conversation, Hamilton created Inmates to Entrepreneurs, a nonprofit organization that helps people with criminal backgrounds start their own small businesses. “Harris and I taught our first course at a prison called ‘ How to Start Your Own Business When You Get Out’ ,” he recalls.

At the time, Hamilton was building his own company, Sageworks. As Sageworks grew, so did Hamilton’ s time spent teaching at prisons throughout North Carolina.

Eventually, Hamilton decided it was time to change his focus to his true passion. In May 2018, he sold his stake(股份) in Sageworks, focusing his commitment on Inmates to Entrepreneurs.

“Now, anyone is able to access the curriculum, either to become an instructor to go into prisons to teach it or to access it for themselves as a prisoner or part of the general population,” Hamilton explains. In addition, he visits middle schools and presents the curriculum to at-risk students as a preventative measure against crime.

The free curriculum is funded by the recently established Brian Hamilton Foundation, which offers assistance to military members as they adjust to civilian life and provides loans to small businesses. “We’re giving prisoners something they can do independent of a system that isn’t working for them. If you can let people know that other people care about them, it makes a difference.”

1Why did Brian Hamilton think the prisoner couldn’t easily find a job after getting out?

A.He didn’t have any special skills.

B.He would have his criminal background with him.

C.He would break the criminal law again and again.

D.He couldn’t access the courses provided by the prison.

2What does the underlined word “entrepreneurship” in paragraph 3 probably mean?

A.Thinking of a good idea after working hard for years.

B.Trying one’s best because of being kept in a small place.

C.Making money by starting or running one’s own businesses.

D.Having a job in a profitable company owned by the government.

3What does the text say about Inmates to Entrepreneurs?

A.It often assists military members.B.It provides loans to small businesses.

C.It’s independent of the social system.D.Its curriculum has been largely broadened.

4What is the main idea of the text?

A.A man made a fruitless visit to the prison.

B.A man sold his business to teach prisoners.

C.A man realized his dream of being a teacher.

D.A man successfully created two organizations.

【題目】Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Live in the present moment

To a large degree, the measure of our peace of mind is determined by how much we are able to live in the present moment. Irrelevant to what happened yesterday, and what may or may not happen tomorrow.

Without question, many of us have mastered the art of spending much of our lives worrying about a variety of things. We allow past problems to dominate our present moments so much that we end up anxious, frustrated, depressed and hopeless. We have concern over events that might happen in the future—we won’ t have enough money, our children will get into trouble, we will get old and die, whatever. We also postpone our gratification, our priorities and happiness, often convincing ourselves that “someday” will be better than today. Unfortunately, that “someday” never arrives.

Life is what’s happening while we’re busy making other plans. When we’re busy making other plans, our children are busy growing up, the people we love are moving away and dying, our bodies are getting out of shape, and our dreams are slipping away. Many people live as if life was a dress rehearsal for some later date. It isn’t. In fact, no one has a guarantee that he or she will be here tomorrow. Now is the only time we have, and the only time we have any control over. When our attention is in the present moment, we push problems and fear from our minds.

The best strategy to improve our well-being is to learn to bring your attention back to the present. Mark Twain said, “I have been through some terrible things in my life, some of which actually happened. I don’t think I can say it any better. Practice keeping your attention on the here and now. Your efforts will pay off.”
