Bertie knew there was something in the wind. His mother had been sad in recent days, not sick, just strangely sad. The lion had just lain down beside him,his head warm on Bertie’s feet, when Father cleared his throat and began, “You’ll soon be eight, Bertie. A boy needs a proper education. We’ve found the right place for you, a school near Salisbury in England. ”
His heart filled with a terrible fear, all Bertie could think of was his white lion. “But the lion,” he cried, “What about the lion?”
“I’m afraid there’s something else I have to tell you, ” his father said. Looking across at Bertie’s mother, he took a deep breath. Then he told Bertie he had met a circus owner from France, who was over in Africa looking for lions to buy. He would come to their farm in a few days.
“No! You can’t send him to a circus!” said Bertie. “People will come to see him. He’ll be shut up behind bars. I promised him he never would be. And they will laugh at him. He’d rather die. Any animal would! ” But as he looked across the table at them, he knew their minds were quite made up.
Bertie felt completely betrayed (出賣). He waited until he heard his father’s deep breathing next door. With his white lion at his heels,he crept (躡手躡腳地移動(dòng)) downstairs, took down his father’s rifle (步槍) and stepped out into the night. He ran and ran till his legs could run no more. As the sun came up over the grassland, he climbed to the top of a hill and sat down, his arms round the lion’s neck. The time had come.
“Be wild now”,he whispered. “You’ve got to be wild. Don’t ever come home. All my life I’ll think of you. I promise I will. ” He buried his head in the lion’s neck. Then, Bertie climbed down the hill and walked away.
When he looked back, the lion was still sitting there watching him; but then he stood up, yawned, stretched, and sprang down after him. Bertie shouted at him, but he kept coming. He threw sticks. He threw stones. Nothing worked.
There was only one thing left to do. With tears filling his eyes and his mouth,he lifted the rifle to his shoulder and fired over the lion’s head.

Rather than talk about how he feels, often a man would express his love by buying the woman cosmetics (化妝品), or bringing home a flower, or giving up the control of the remote (遙控器).
And when men do talk, they’d prefer to talk about actions rather than emotions. For example, a lot of men would choose to express their long-range faith in a relationship by talking about next summer’s vacation plans, not by starting a conversation about undying love.
Men just prefer to say their plans with plane tickets, rather than poetry. It’s one of the reasons why men are more comfortable talking at work (the practical world) than they are at home (the castle that emotion built). But you can bring out his great communicator by making him feel more like he’s operating in the work mode, even when the topic at hand is your love life.
When men talk less and women want more, the conflict can escalate. Like when a policeman is questioning an unwilling witness, more silence equals more questions. A full 65 percent of men we surveyed recently told us that they don’t want their partners to ask them more questions about themselves.
It’s clear that some men are just tired of feeling like they’re on the witness stand. They’re not necessarily hiding anything; many men simply prefer not to have to tell confusing feelings that they may not even understand themselves.
An age-old method can make things better: back off a little, give him room to operate in a conversation, and he’s more likely to open up.
小題1:According to the author, men feel more comfortable when talking        .
A.a(chǎn)ctionsB.feelings
C.long-term friendshipD.conversations
小題2:How can women communicate more successfully with men?
A.They may give men a surprise by buying plane tickets.
B.They can ask men if they have a great time during working.
C.They might create a warm home environment first of all.
D.They can give men the feeling that they are talking at work.
小題3:The underlined word “escalate” has the similar meaning to       .
A.decreaseB.disappearC.changeD.increase
小題4:From the text it can be inferred that       .
A.women are better at writing poems about emotions than men

C.men are more interested in learning more about their partners
D.men prefer to pour out their hearts in a forgiving environment

During communication, “words” express only 7% of meanings between people. About 23% of meanings are from the “tone of voice” and 70% of meanings come from “body language”. So next time you want someone’s attention—try body language instead.
Everyone does it, and most interestingly—most do it unconsciously. You may wonder: “Does that mean I have to study psychology to succeed in reading body language?” The answer is “no” because most people are already body language readers.
It’s a skill developed since we’re babies—think of how most babies can recognize facial expressions and get attention without saying anything. That is, you needn’t spend most of your time practicing some of your body language cues(暗示)!
However, you should know that the context(語境) is king. It suggests that, depending on the context of the situation, people will hide body language cues. So sometimes cues can be tricky: a woman who locks her arms may think you are boring—or she may just feel cold. You must learn to read into the context as well as the cues. Sometimes people care more about their body language cues. For example, poker(撲克牌戲) players will consciously hide more of their body language cues.
The first place to start when reading a person’s body language is the face. The easiest way to hide your feelings is to cover your face. This is why it’s sometimes hard to tell if an Islamic girl likes you.
If the eyes are the windows of the mind, the eyebrows(眉毛) are the windows of the eyes. So, notice how a person’s eyebrows will generally rise when they meet someone, see something they like or are surprised at. Eyes generally smile along with the mouth when someone is happy, so everyone knows “^ . ^”.
小題1:The first paragraph is mainly to show _____.
A.how to express your meanings clearly
B.how to draw other’s attention
C.the importance of body language
D.the role of words in communication
小題2:Most of the time in our daily life, we ______.
A.find body language very interesting
B.don’t realize we’re using body language
C.hardly use any body language
D.use body language on purpose
小題3:What does the saying “the context is king” suggest?
A.The context results from body language.
B.The context makes body language difficult.
C.The context helps when reading body language.
D.The context is more important than body language.
小題4:Who will hide their body language cues on purpose according to the text?
A.ScientistsB.Farmers.C.Teachers.D.Poker players.

In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity.Others say that competition is bad, that it sets one person against another, that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.
I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often, life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.
However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition.Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society.Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success.By not trying, they always have an excuse: "I may have lost, but it doesn't matter because I really didn't try."What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot.Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one's self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued.Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve (緩解) can we discover a new meaning in competition .
小題1:What does this passage mainly talk about?
A.Competition helps to set up self-respect.
B.Opinions about competition are different among people.
C.Competition is harmful to personal quality development.
D.Failures are necessary experiences in competition.
小題2:Why do some people favor competition according to the passage?
A.It builds up a sense of duty.
B.It pushes society forward.
C.It improves personal abilities.
D.It encourages individual efforts.
小題3:The underlined phrase "the most vocal" in Paragraph 3 means ____.
A.those who try their best to win
B.those who value competition most highly
C.those who are against competition most strongly
D.those who rely on others most for success
小題4:What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with a "desire to fail"?
A.One's worth lies in his performance compared with others'.
B.One's success in competition needs great efforts.
C.One's achievement is determined by his particular skills.
D.One's success is based on how hard he has tried.
小題5:Which point of view may the author agree to?
A.Every effort should be paid back.
B.Competition should be encouraged.
C.Winning should be a life-and-death matter.
D.Fear of failure should be removed in competition.

Dear David,
My daughter will be five years old. She is happy, well-mannered, loving and pretty. She has attended a Montessori school since she was 16 months old and has made two friends. The three girls are always together, or talking with each other.
But recently the girls told my daughter that they would not play with her if she kept playing with the boy who was disliked by most of the class. My daughter always finds good things in others and insisted they play with him, too. Then one of the friends told my daughter she didn’t have straight hair and shouldn’t play with them. Then she started ignoring my daughter. My mother-in-law decided to iron my girl’s beautiful curly hair(卷發(fā)).
With her birthday coming, my child decided to invite her friends to her party. When I asked her why, she said because they were always together, but I know one of the girls will not attend her party.
I’m concerned about her. I feel lost, not knowing how to help my child.
Jenny
Dear Jenny,
It’s always painful to a mother when someone hurts her child. Your daughter’s friends weren’t nice to her, but little kids are still learning how to get along with others. As a result, young friendships are often fleeting, even changing from day to day. Your daughter seems to be remarkably loving, outgoing and mature(成熟的) beyond her years. Perhaps you need to be proud of the way she treats people.
Ironing your daughter’s hair won’t send your daughter or the other girls a good message. It implies that there is something wrong with the way she is. You have no choice but to let your daughter know that one of the girls won’t be attending her birthday party. If she seems upset, remind her that other friends will be there. My guess is that she will rise to the occasion.
Hope this helps.
David

Nutrition influences not only students' grades at school but their growth and development. Improper nutrition is one of the causes of childhood obesity. What can you do to help your child avoid childhood obesity?
My first piece of advice is to look in your fridge. What are you buying at the grocery store? Think about it: if you don't buy junk food or snacks, your kids won't eat them at home. Now if you're like me — both of your kids are at school, you'll know you can't police them every second of the day. This is the time when you'll need to talk to your children about their food choices. If you don't know the right food choices, there are so many free resources on-line to guide you.
Try new things. I was very surprised to find out my 4-year-old daughter likes balsamic vinegar — she calls it the "black sauce". She likes to have it with tomatoes and cucumbers. You just never know what your kids might like.
Don't get stressed if you can't always prepare something healthy. You may sometimes leave the house and forget to take something out for dinner, or you are running late and there's no time to cook before you have to take one of the kids somewhere. However, you can still make healthy choices while dining out. Many of the fast food restaurants offer fruit and milk instead of soda. I like to buy organic frozen pizzas from the organic market — for a quick dinner solution(解決辦法). All the ingredients are natural. What I do is to serve the pizza with something raw: lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, or fruit to try to give the kids something healthy with that meal.
In closing, take baby steps. Don't try to change your family's eating habits in one go, or you'll go nuts.

Beach volleyball is one of those sports that can be an exciting game to play and watch, or, can just be about some friends getting together to have a great time. It’s really easy, and all you need is sand, a net and a group of people, of any age or fitness level, who want to have fun.
Beach volleyball can be played with as few as two people on each team, making a total of four people. However, if you are less skilled and experienced in the game, it will be easier to play with a larger team. The more players you have, the less ground each person will be responsible(負(fù)責(zé))for covering and the more time they will have to recover in between shots. If you only have a few players, each of you will get quite a workout running for the ball after each volley. If you are looking for that relaxing, fun, low-key experience, choose larger teams.
Beach volleyball is similar(相似)to regular volleyball in its rules. However, even experienced volleyball players do not realize how much more difficult it is to run and jump on sand. Since it is harder to move quickly on sand than a hard ground, play will be much slower than regular volleyball on a playground. When a player trains for beach volleyball, he will focus(專注)on building lower body strength as well as upper body. While he needs to be able to hit the ball with a great deal of power and accuracy(準(zhǔn)確性), strengthening his legs is extremely important.
Whether you are in it for the competition, or just to have a great time with your friends, beach volleyball can be very exciting and fun. You may even start out with friends and fall in love with the sport.
小題1:When you join a large beach volleyball team, you’ll_________.
A.have as many shots as possibleB.improve your volleyball skills
C.be responsible for more groundD.feel light-hearted(輕松)while playing
小題2:Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.You can hit the ball with much less power when playing beach volleyball.
B.The playground size of beach volleyball is much larger than that of regular volleyball.
C.You can run more quickly when you are playing regular volleyball.
D.The rules of beach volleyball are totally different from those of regular volleyball.
小題3:What does the writer think of beach volleyball?
A.It is a difficult sport to learn.
B.It is a very exciting and interesting sport.
C.It is a sport which needs less power.
D.It is a sport which needs more skills.
小題4:Why is it much slower to play beach volley ball than regular volleyball?  Because _________.
A.it is not an easy job to move on sand
B.it is a workout running for the ball
C.it is usually a larger team
D.the beach volleyball is heavier
小題5:The passage mainly tells us _________.
A.the game of beach volleyball
B.how to become an excellent volleyball player
C.why beach volleyball is one of exciting sports

"Hey, don't read in the hallway. Your eyesight will be damaged." You must have heard such warnings many times. Don’t read in dim (暗的)light! This is one of the “pearls of wisdom” that are supposed to help us live a healthy life. Such common beliefs, however, lack scientific basis, according to a paper published recently in the British Medical Journal.
Do you believe in the following everyday wisdom?
Reading in dim light ruins your eyesight.
In dim light, you might blink (眨眼) more, feel discomfort from drying and have trouble focusing. But the majority of eye experts believe it is unlikely to do any permanent damage.
We must drink at least eight glasses of water a day
In 1945, the Nutrition Council in US suggested that people need to consume 2.5 litres of water a day. But the water contained in food, particularly fruit and vegetables, as well as in milk, juice and soft drinks, also counts towards the total.
We only use 10 percent of our brains.
This myth arose as early as 1907. People have long argued about our power of self-improvement and our brains’ potential abilities. But detailed imaging shows that no area of the brain is silent or inactive.
Shaving your legs causes hair to grow black faster and thicker.
This theory is also illusion. Shaving has no effect on the thickness or rate of hair growth,
studies say. Just over time, the edge of hair gets worn away and thus the edge of long hair becomes finer (更細(xì)). So hair that is newly grown gives the impression of darkness.
小題1:What does the paper say about some common beliefs?
A.They are pearls of wisdomB.They help us live in healthy ways
C.They are well-known theories.D.They do not have scientific basis.
小題2:Which of the following is true according to the passage ?
A.Reading in dim light does harm to one’s eyes.
B.People need a total of 2.5 litres of water a day
C.People use 90 percent of their brains.
