【題目】Americans plan parties for many reasons. As in other cultures, many Americans attend parties for weddings and religious or national holidays. But some parties are especially American. For example, a group of neighbors may gather on their street to eat food, play music and visit with one another. This is called a block party. A woman might invite a group of women to a party called a baby shower for a friend who is about to give birth. Guests bring presents for the new baby.
Americans also attend tailgate parties. A tailgate is the back end of a truck or other vehicle that opens down. The tailgate parties are a big part of sports culture in the United States. Friends bring food and drink to a sports event. They eat together in the parking area of the sports stadium.
Birthday parties are also very popular. Many parents organize a party for their child around a theme. Birthday parties usually include gifts and a birthday cake with candles. In many parts of the United States, cupcakes have become a popular replacement for cakes.
Birthday parties can be low cost or very costly. Some parents take their children’s birthday parties very seriously, even when the child is too young to fully understand the celebration.
One group of parents started a website called Birthdays Without Pressure. They decided that some parents were under too much social pressure to plan costly parties for their children. The group sees this movement as an example of America’s culture of “too much stuff”. The group’s website gives suggestions on how to keep birthday celebrations simple, meaningful and fun without spending a lot of money. Their advice may be very helpful during this period of economic recession (蕭條).

【題目】A mouse happened to look through a hole in the wall to see the farmer and his wife open a package. “What food might this contain?” The mouse wondered. But he was sad to discover it was a mousetrap (老鼠夾子).
Back to the farmyard, the mouse announced this warning: “There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!”
The hen clucked (咯咯地叫) and scratched, raised her head and said, “Mr. Mouse, I can tell this is a great concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me. I cannot be bothered by it.”
Then the mouse turned to the pig. The pig sympathized, but said, “I am very sorry, Mr. Mouse, but there is nothing I can do about it but pray. Be assured you are in my prayers.”
Then the mouse turned to the cow and repeated the same words. The cow said, “Moo, Mr. Mouse. I’m sorry for you, but it’s no skin off my nose.”
So, the mouse returned to the house, head down and sadly faced the farmer’s mousetrap alone. That very night a sound was heard throughout the house – the sound of a mousetrap catching its prey (獵物). The farmer’s wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see it. It was a poisonous snake whose tail was caught in the trap. The snake bit the farmer’s wife. The farmer rushed her to the hospital. When she returned home, she still had a fever.
Everyone knows fresh chicken soup is good to treat a fever. So the farmer took his knife to the farmyard. The hen was killed.
But his wife’s sickness continued. Friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig.

How to Stop Being Boy Shy
Shyness and feelings of insecurity towards the opposite sex are normal. It is part of growing up. Sometimes, adults even experience the same issues. If you’re a young girl and you find that you’re shy around boys, you’re not alone. However, it doesn’t mean that you always have to be that way.
There are things you can do to start overcoming your shyness. Here are approaches you can take to stop being boy shy.
【1】_______________You need to develop your self-confidence and self-respect. You need to look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself every morning that you’re a good person and you have a lot of great qualities. Give yourself a mental pep talk (鼓舞士氣的講話) so you can start believing that boys and other girls will like you for who you are. It doesn’t matter if you are not beautiful, have low grades or still have baby fat. If you want other people to start liking you, you need to like and accept yourself first.
【2】_______________ Boys of your age are going through the same thing you are, so they also have feelings of insecurity and uncertainty. The boy may be shy too! The difference is that boys tend to cover up their shyness and insecurity by being more loud or lively. If you start thinking that you’re all really the same at heart, you’ll find that boys will be much more approachable.
【3】_______________If you would like to start winning friends and make an impression that you are approachable, smile when you make eye contact with someone. It’s a signal to the world that you are friendly and are open. When you smile at someone, the boy know that you are accepting him.
【4】_______________ When you’re trying to get over your shyness around boys, don’t go the other extreme and behave shamelessly. Just be yourself and don’t be something or someone you’re not. Don’t agree to things in the conversation just to make him like you. Express your own opinions. Be original. You also don’t need to dress in a strange manner to attract their attention.
【5】_______________ There are many things to develop your self-respect and make you feel good about yourself. If you want to stop being boy shy or get over your shyness in general, then you need to develop yourself. Find things that interest you and explore it. If you love music, take singing classes or join the choir (合唱隊). If you love art, start painting. Don’t make your life move around boys because there are so many other things you should be focusing on. It’s OK to work on your shyness, but it’s shouldn’t be your goal in life to get a boyfriend.
It’s up to you to get over your shyness around boys. Relax and take a deep breath so you know you look your best. Smile and be approachable so you don’t have to be boy shy anymore.

【題目】China is a land of bicycles. At least it was back in 1992 when I traveled the country. Back then everyone seemed to be riding a bicycle. Millions of them, all black. Cars were rare. Yet since my arrival in Beijing last year, I've found the opposite is true. There are millions of cars. However, people still use their bicycles to get around. For many, it's the easiest and cheapest way to travel today. Bicycles also come in different colors—silver, green, red, blue, yellow, whatever you want.
It's fun watching people biking. They rush quickly through crossroads, move skillfully through traffic, and ride even on sidewalks(人行道). Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars just can't provide.
Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture, I decided to buy a bicycle. Great weather accompanied my great buy. I immediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home.
My first ride home was orderly(守秩序的). To be safe, I stayed with a “pack” of bikers while cars on the streets came running swiftly out of nowhere at times. I didn't want to get hit. So I took the ride carefully.
Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was a lot like crossing a major highway back in the United States. The streets here were wide, so crossing took time, skill and a little bit of luck.
I finally made it home. The feeling on the bicycle was amazing. The air hitting my face and going through my hair was wonderful. I was sitting on top of the world as I passed by places and people. Biking made me feel alive.
【1】According to the author, why are bicycles still popular in China today?
A.Because they are traditional and safe.
B.Because they are convenient and inexpensive.
C.Because they are colorful and available.
D.Because they are fast and environment friendly.
【2】The author decided to buy a bicycle because he intended ________.
A.to ride it for fun
B.to use it for transport
C.to experience local culture
D.to improve his riding skills
【3】How did the author feel about his street crossing?
A.It was boring. B.It was difficult.
C.It was lively. D.It was wonderful.
【4】Which of the following best describes the author's biking experience?
A.The author enjoyed showing off his biking skills.
B.The author was annoyed by the air while riding.
C.The author was praised by the other bikers.
D.The author took great pleasure in biking.
