During my free time one day, I wandered down a lonely path into the woods and sat against a tree.
Then I saw one of the camp counselors approaching me. "Oh great," I thought, since counselors were
always trying to cheer you up or make you laugh.
"Hey," he said, "mind if I have a seat?" I shrugged. I wasn't. going to encourage him, but I couldn't
exactly stop him, either. He sat down alongside me and extended a hand. "I'm Gary," he said, "and
you're Erica, right?" I nodded. "You don't exactly look like you're having a good time," he began.
I crossed my arms and gritted my teeth.  "Look," I said, "I didn't want to come to camp, I don't like
it. I'm not having fun, and it basically stinks(令討厭的) ," I glared at Gary.
"So there's nothing here at all for you, huh?" he asked.
     " Nothing,"  I answered.
"Let me show you something," said Gary. He got up, and I followed him along the path until I heard
a  sound like a roaring freight train.
     " What's that?" I asked.
"Wait and see," he replied, with a small smile.
When we rounded the corner, I couldn't believe what I saw. There was the biggest waterfall I could
ever imagine, right in front of me. "Cool!" I said, and I could feel my eyes getting bigger and a smile
tugging at my mouth.
"Still think there's nothing here for you?" asked Gary. " Because there's a whole lot more of this kind
of  nothing' around here. "
I had to admit, the waterfall was impressive.
"Look," said Gary, "camp is what you make it. You can be  sullen (悶悶不樂的)  and  closed-minded and have a rotten (倒霉的)  four weeks,  or you can take a look around you and see some of the
incredible sights and appreciate the opportunity. It would be useless for me to try to make you have fun.
You can only do that for yourself. But if you loosen up a little, you might actually have a good time."
With that, he turned and walked away, leaving me on the path.
That night, by the campfire, I found myself singing along with everyone else. By the time the four
weeks were up, I didn't want to leave. I'd seen some amazing things and made some great friends.
Beauty is where you find it. Life is what you make it. I think it's going to be a good year this year.
I mean, I'm going to work to make it one. Maybe if I'm lucky, I'll get to go back to camp next
year.

A study of English learning problems was carried out among a total of 106 foreign students. It shows
that most students considered understanding spoken English to be their biggest problem on arrival. This
was followed by speaking. Writing increased as a problem as students discovered difficultties in writing
papers that they were now expected to hand in. Reading remained as a significant (顯著的) problem.
The information gained helped us in determining where special attention should be paid in our course.
Although many students have chosen to join the course with a reasonable motivation (動機), we considered
it important to note what seemed to encourage interest. Nearly all the students have experienced some kind
of grammar-based English teaching in their own country. To use the same method would be self-defeating
because it might reduce motivation, especially if it has failed in the past. Therefore a different method may
help because it is different.
Variety of activity was also seen as a way of maintaining (保持) or increasing motivation. Several years
ago we had one timetable that operated throughout, but we soon found that both the students and the teachers
lost interest by about halfway through the ten weeks. This led us to a major re-think, so finally we brought it
into line with the expressed language needs of the students.
1. What is the text mainly about?
A. Foreign students have more problems.
B. There are many ways to improve English.
C. Teaching should meet students' needs.
D. English learning problems should be studied again.
2. Writing became a bigger problem when foreign students _____.
A. had to write their papers
B. became better at speaking
C. became less interested in reading
D. had fewer problems with listening
3. We may infer from the last two paragraphs that _____.
A. different teaching methods should be used
B. grammar-based teaching seems to be encouraging
C. English courses are necessary for foreign students
D. teaching content should be changed halfway
4. The word "it" underlined in the last paragraph refers to "_____".
A. re-think
B. activity
C. motivation
D. timetable

Most people feel lonely sometimes, but it usually only lasts between a few minutes and a few hours. This
kind of loneliness is not serious. In fact, it is quite normal. For some people, though, loneliness can last for
years. Now researchers say there are three different types of loneliness.
The first kind of loneliness is temporary. This is the most common type. It usually disappears quickly and
does not require any special, attention. The second kind, situational loneliness, is a natural result of a particular
situation, for example, a family problem, the death of a loved one, or moving to a new place. Although this kind
of loneliness can cause physical problems, such as headaches and sleeplessness, it usually does not last for
more than a year.
The third kind of loneliness is the most severe. Unlike the second type, chronic (長期的) loneliness usually
lasts more than two years and has no specific cause. People who experience habitual loneliness have problems
socializing and becoming close to others. Unfortunately, many chronically lonely people think there is little or
nothing they can do to improve their condition.
Psychologists agree that one important factor in loneliness is a person's social contacts, e. g., friends, family
members, co-workers, etc. We depend on various people for different reasons. For instance, our families give
us emotional support, our parents and teachers give us guidance, and our friends share similar interests and
activities. However, psychologists have found that, though lonely people may have many social contacts, they
sometimes feel they should have more. They question their own popularity.
Psychologists are trying to find ways to help habitually lonely people for two reasons: they are unhappy and
unable to socialize and there is a connection between chronic loneliness and serious illness such as heart disease.
While temporary and situational loneliness can be a normal, healthy part of life, chronic loneliness can be a very
sad, and sometimes dangerous condition.

B. we depend on various people for different reason
C. lonely people don't have many social problems
D. lonely people don't have many friends
3. Why do psychologists want to help chronically lonely people?
A. Chronic loneliness can cause family problems.
B. Chronic loneliness can cause serious illness.
C. Chronic loneliness can not be overcome.
D. A, B and C are all correct.
4. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Three Kinds of Loneliness
