At a few minutes past five, Dave noted that the blanket of darkness was lifting. He was just able to make out the heavier masses that eventually appeared as the familiar trees that lined the road at the base of the hill. The upper reaches of the sky showed lighter shades of gray.
Dave got out of bed quietly and dressed quickly. He mixed a spoonful of instant chocolate into a glass of cold water, and his impatience forced him to finish the drink in gulps.
As he walked down toward the lake, Dave paused to reach for the fishing pole and gear box on the bench where he had left them the night before.
By the time he reached the small boat, a thick white mist (霧氣) had spread over the surface of the water. He stepped into the boat, sat down, and rowed out of the weed beds that lined the edge of the shore.
The outer fringe (邊緣) of the lake disappeared as the boat moved forward noiselessly. All he could see was the enveloping whiteness. He could not tell where the boat and the surrounding air met the surface of the lake.
Dave rowed steadily ahead, relying on a mental picture of the surroundings. Then the mist began to rise, slowly. It soon rested inches above the still surface of the lake. The heavy silence was now being broken by the fish breaking through the surface as they leaped out of the water for low-flying insects.
The magic time had arrived. Dave raised his pole. Dawn was broken. He was excited with expectancy.

39.解析:這是一道判斷題。全文講了Dave捕魚的過程,因此他早起是為了捕魚,而不是享受湖邊的美景、湖邊探險或者湖邊漫步,因此選C。
40.解析:這是一道推斷題。從第六段第一句“Dave rowed steadily ahead, relying on a mental picture of the surroundings.”可知,Dave對環(huán)境很熟悉,因此選B。
41.解析:這是一道指代題。在it之前一句話“Then the mist began to rise, slowly”可知,it指代的是the mist。
42.解析:這是一道推斷題。從第三段第二句“Dave paused to reach for the fishing pole and gear box on the bench”可知他來湖邊目的是捕魚,最后又講到“Dave raised his pole. He was excited with expectancy.”由此可知,Dave希望捕很多的魚。

“Kim,” began Bill Williams, “I am very pleased with the quality of your work. I have nothing but praise for your devotion and your hard work. My only concern is that you are not active enough in putting forward your suggestions.”
“But,” replied Kim, “I have always completed every assignment you have given me. Mr. Williams.”

To build a safer car, Japanese automakers are trying to replace the most accident-prone (易出事故的) part: the driver.
Inspired by statistics blaming human error for most accidents, Toyota and its competitors are designing “intelligent” cars that can almost drive themselves on the high way.
The systems are designed to reduce human tiredness and the mistakes that often result. This kind of support is what drivers need most in a country with some of the most crowded reads in the world. That is why it should not be surprising that Japan is leading the race to make cars smarter.
To provide a safer ride, Japanese automakers are turning to technologies like laser radar and machine vision to replace tired eyes and wandering minds.
An infrared radar unit fixed on the bumper is part of a now cruise (巡航) control method that Toyota introduced in August 1997. It’s now an optional feature on its Celsior luxury sedan that costs 70,000 yen (US$648).
The “adaptive” system tracks the car ahead, and slows down or speed up the car automatically to keep a safer distance in highway traffic. The same technology has also been used by some cars made by Toyota’s competitors.
Subaru, a type of its Legacy wagon, made its first appearance last September with Active Driving Assist, which besides adjusting cruising speed, sounds an alarm if the car goes out of its lane or makes a turn too fast. In the latter case, it down shifts gear even before the driver starts to brake.
An even smarter system is coming from Honda. Called Honda Intelligent Driver Support (HIDS), it “sees” the road through a tiny camera on the windshield and helps steer the car down the middle of lane. A computer picks out lines on the highway surface and touched the car’s steering wheel in the right direction. Honda got approval in March to start testing HIDS on the highway and says it will arrive in showrooms in the near future.

Records of the U.S. Olympic Committee show that Rockefeller was the oldest American medal winner. He was the captain of Yale University's eight-man rowing team with coxswain that won gold at the 1924 Paris Olympics - beating the Canadian team by less than 16 seconds. The oars from the winning race and the gold medal were prominently displayed in Rockefeller's house. "I think he was really proud of that - probably more than the bank career," said his grandson。
Rockefeller suffered a stroke on Thursday, said his grandson, who lived with him at his Greenwich home for two years, attributed his long life to a regimented(嚴(yán)密組織的) lifestyle: breakfast at eight a.m., lunch at 1 p.m., cocktails at 6 p.m. and dinner promptly at 7 p.m.. He was became president in 1952, chairman in 1959 and retired in 1967. In 1955, under Rockefeller's leadership, the bank merged with the First National Bank of New York to form Citigroup. Rockefeller also was a director of numerous companies, including Pan American Airways, Northern Pacific Railroad, NCR and Monsanto, and served on the boards of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the American Museum of Natural History.

Oliver Twist, one of the most famous works of Charles Dickens, is a novel reflecting the tragic fact of the life in Britain in the 19th century.
The author who himself was born in a poor family wrote this novel in his twenties with a view to reveal the ugly masks of those cruel criminals and to 36 the horror and violence hidden underneath the narrow and dirty streets in London.
The hero of this novel was Oliver Twist, an orphan, who was thrown into a world full of  37
and crime. He suffered enormous pain, 38 hunger, thirst, beating and abuse. While reading the tragic experiences of little Oliver, I was shocked by his sufferings. I 39 the poor boy, but at the same time I detested the evil Fagin and the brutal Bill. To my relief, as was written in all the best stories, the goodness eventually conquered  40  and Oliver lived a happy life in the end. One of the plots that attracted me 41  is that after the theft, little Oliver was allowed to recover in the kind care of Mrs Maylie and Rose and 42  a new life.
How can such a little boy who had already suffered oppressive pain 43  pure in body and mind? The reason is the nature of goodness. I think it is the most important information 44 in the novel by Dickens --- he believed that goodness could conquer  45  difficulty.
Goodness is to human what water is to fish. He who is without goodness is an utterly  46  person. On the contrary, as the famous saying goes, “ The fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose.” He who is with goodness undoubtedly is a happy and useful person. People receiving his help are grateful to him and he also gets gratified from what he has done, and thus he can do  47  to both the people he has helped and himself.
