【題目】Next time a customer comes to your office, offer him a cup of coffee. And when you’re doing your holiday shopping online, make sure you’re holding a large glass of iced tea. The physical sensation (感覺) of warmth encourages emotional (情感的) warmth, while a cold drink in hand prevents you from making unwise decisions—those are the practical lesson being drawn from recent research by psychologist (心理學家) John A. Bargh.

Psychologists have known that one person’s perception (感知) of another’s “warmth” is a powerful determiner in social relationships. Judging someone to be either “warm” or “cold” is a primary consideration, even trumping evidence that a “cold” person may be more capable (能干的). Much of this is rooted in very early childhood experiences, Bargh argues, when babies’ sense of the world around them is shaped by physical sensations, particularly warmth and coldness.

Feelings of “warmth” and “coldness” in social judgments appear to be universal. Although no worldwide study has been done, Bargh says that describing people as “warm” or “cold” is common to many cultures, and studies have found those perceptions influence judgment in dozens of countries.

To test the relationship between physical and psychological warmth, Bargh conducted an experiment which involved 41 college students. A research assistant who was unaware of the study’s hypotheses (假設), handed the students either a hot cup of coffee, or a cold drink, to hold while the researcher filled out a short information form: The drink was then handed back. After that, the students were asked to rate the personality of “Person A” based on a particular description. Those who had briefly held the warm drink regarded Person A as warmer than those who had held the iced drink.

“We are grounded in our physical experiences even when we think abstractly (抽象的),” says Bargh.

1According to Paragraph I,a person’s emotion may be affected by ________.

A. the visitors to his office

B. the psychology lessons he has

C. his physical feeling of coldness

D. the things he has bought online

2In Bargh’s experiment, the students were asked to _________.

A. judge someone’s personality

B. write down their hypotheses

C. fill out a personal information form

D. hold coffee and cold drink alternatively (有選擇地)

3We can infer from the passage that ________.

A. abstract thinking does not come from physical experiences

B. feelings of warmth and coldness are studied worldwide

C. physical temperature affects how we see others

D. capable persons are often cold to others

【題目】I needed to get some money so I 1(take)a job in the clothes department at Graham’s for the January sale. I can’t say that I enjoyed it, 2it was an experience I’ll never forget.

When I arrived half an hour before opening on the first day of the sale, there was already 3queue around three sides of the building. This made me very nervous. The moment the security guards4(lock) the doors, they hid behind the doors for protection as the noisy crowd rushed in. I couldn’t believe my eyes: this wasn’t shopping; it was a battlefield!

After a while, clothes were flying in all directions as people searched5the sizes, colours and styles they wanted. Within minutes I had half a dozen people 6(push) clothes under my nose, each wanting 7(be) the first served. The whole day continued like that. People were spending money like water without thinking 8 they needed what they were buying. As 9as it was a bargain it was OK.

That night, after a quick dinner I went to bed exhausted, fearing the sound of the alarm 10would tell me to get ready for the second day of the sale.

Good afternoon, and welcome to England. We hope that your visit here will be a pleasant one. Today, I would like to draw your attention to a few of our laws.
The first one is about drinking. Now, you may not buy alcohol in this country if you are under 18 years of age, nor may your friends buy it for you.

【題目】閱讀下面短文,并按照題目要求用英語回答問題。
When I was growing up, I was embarrassed to be seen with my father. He was severely lame and very short, and when we would walk together, his hand on my arm for balance, people would stare. I would feel ashamed at the unwanted attention. If he ever noticed or was bothered, he never let on, nor did he say anything about it.
It was difficult to coordinate(協(xié)調) our steps—his pausing, my impatience—and because of that, we didn't say much as we went along. But as we started out, he always said, “You set the pace, I will try to adjust to you.”
Our usual walk was to or from the subway, which was how he got to work. He went to work sick, and despite bad weather. He almost never misseda day, and would make it to the office even if others could not. A matter of pride.
When snow or ice was on the ground, it was impossible for him to walk, even with help. At such times my sisters or I would pull him through the streets of Brooklyn, NY, on a child's sleigh to the subway entrance. Once there, he would grasp the handrail until he reached the lower steps that the warmer tunnel air kept ice-free. In Manhattan the subway station was the basement of his office building, and he would not have to go outside until we met him in Brooklyn on his way home.
When I think of it now, I wondered at how much courage it must have taken for a grown man to subject himself to such indignity and stress. Andat how he did it—without bitterness or complaint.
He never talked about himself as an object of pity, nor did heshow any envy of the more fortunate or able. What he looked for in others was a“good heart”, and if he found one, the owner was good enough for him.
Now that I am older, I believe that is a proper standard by which to judge people, even though I still don't know precisely what a “good heart” is. But I know the times I don't have one myself.
My father has been gone many years now, but I think of him often. I wonder if he sensed my unwillingness to be seen with him during our walks. If he did, I am sorry I never told him how sorry I was, how unworthy Iwas, how I regretted it. I think of him when I complain about incident, when I am envious of another's good fortune, when I don't have a “good heart”.
At such times I put my hand on his arm to regain my balance, and say, “You set the pace, I will try to adjust to you.”
(1)How did the man treat his father when he was young?
A.He helped his father happily.
B.He never helped his father.
C.He helped his father, but not very happily.
D.He only helped his father take a walk after supper.
(2)As a disabled man, his father ____.
A.didn't work very hard
B.didn't go to work from time to time
C.hated those who had good fortune
D.was happy and satisfied, and never lost hope
(3)What does the underlined word “reluctance” mean in the article? It means ____.
A.anger
B.sadness
C.happiness
D.unwillingness
(4)How did the father get to work usually?
A.By subway.
B.By bus.
C.By wheelchair.
D.By bike.
