【題目】The demands of the modern world are growing day by day and this is putting more pressure on scientists to do research. However, as stated by Griffiths, “There is no hope of doing perfect research”. Naturally, there have been a lot of criticisms (批評), as many scientists immediately announce that their research methods are very safe and that they have the perfect research theory (理論).

However, scientific history is filled with examples, in which a perfect scientific solution that was based on decades of scientific research has been overturned (推翻) with new theories. Naturally the first example that comes to mind is the fact that Newton’s Theories were thought to be very safe and they were used in all fields of science. For centuries, thousands of scientists around the world used Newton’s Theories to formulate (規(guī)劃) other theories.

However, after nearly two centuries of use, Newton’s Theories were found to be not as perfect as they were thought. Through Einstein’s publication on the General Theory of Relativity, it was found that Newton’s laws were imperfect in explaining all motions (運(yùn)動(dòng)) that were taking place in our universe. It was found to be imperfect under some conditions, even though, Newton’s laws are still used today to predict motion at low speeds.

Thus, perfect research is only a myth (神話). Of course, this does not mean that a scientist should simply give up and accept imperfection in his or her research efforts. Improvements and changes in research techniques and methods are a natural part of evolution (進(jìn)化) and it is each scientist’s responsibility to take it forward as much as possible.

While the final answer to the universe’s questions may never exist, a time will come when there will be fewer questions as new answers are found and more improved research is carried out by scientists around the world.

1Why have there been a lot of criticisms?

A. The modern world demands mor e and more.

B. Scientists have a negative attitude.

C. Many scientists arrive at their conclusions (結(jié)論) too fast.

D. Griffiths does not believe what scientists say.

2Through the publication of the General Theory of Relativity, Newton’s Theories turned out to be ______.

A. not so perfect B. completely wrong C. very safe D. very exact

3What will scientists do to deal with the “imperfectness” problem?

A. Accept the fact and give up.

B. Improve and change their methods and techniques.

C. Try their best to carry out the perfect study.

D. Ignore it and do as they please.

4We can learn from the last paragraph that ______.

A. the universe’s questions are sure to have a final answer

B. the number of questions is sure to increase with the passing of time

C. scientists are carrying out improved studies

D. there will be more scientists in the world in the future

【題目】Taking a photo of your food and posting it online is becoming more and more popular. However, not everyone thinks it’s such a good idea.

Food photos are popular on social networking sites. People often post pictures of their meals on Facebook or photo sites such as Tumblr and Instagram. Many of the pictures are of delicious-looking food from top-class restaurants. Some people even find it addictive(上癮的). “I couldn’t get enough of it. I had to IG (instagram) every single meal,” one food poster wrote.

Sad Desk Lunch was created by office worker Kira Fisher in 2012. At the time, she was working as a video editor in New York. “I was starting at my rather terrible vegetable soup, which I was eating at my desk, and just thought, I can’t believe I’m eating this soup, let alone eating it alone at my desk,” she said. Other similar sites include cooksuck.com, foodporndairy.com and dimlyiitmealsforone. Tumblr.com.

Some chefs are trying to stop people photographing food in their restaurants. Gilles Goujon runs a three-star restaurant in southern France. 【題目】In a time when a dangerous number of people are overweight, many people seem to have forgotten the most important way to keep healthy and slim---exercise. And as a new study carried out on mice in the lab has shown, exercise done early in life can reward you in your adult years.

A team of researchers at the University of California studied the effects of early exercise on adult physical activity, body mass and eating. They found that early-age exercise in mice has positive effects on adult levels of voluntary exercise in addition to reducing body mass.

“These results may have an effect on the importance of regular physical education in elementary and middle schools,” said Theodore Garland, a professor of biology, who led the research project. “If kids exercise regularly through their school years, then they may be more likely to exercise as adults, which could have far-reaching positive effects on human health and well-being.”

Although the positive effects of early-life exercise lasted for only one week, it is important to note that one week in the life of a mouse is the same as about nine months for humans. “Our results suggest that any positive effects of early-life exercise on adult exercise will need to be kept up if they are to be long-lasting.”

His team of researchers found, too, that all mice that had access to early exercise were lighter in weight than non-exercised mice.

Garland explained that, in general, exercise will stimulate appetite sooner or later. However, it is possible that certain types of exercise, done for certain periods of time or at certain light levels, might not stimulate appetite much, if at all, at least in some individuals.

“If we could understand what sorts of exercise these might be, then we might be able to tailor exercise recommendations in a way that would bring the benefits of exercise without increase in appetite, leading to a better chance of weight loss,” he said.

B. Early-life exercise has life-long positive effects on people

C. Kids should be encouraged to do exercise as early as possible to ensure physical health.

D. The new study on mice mainly focused on how exercise affects appetite.

【3】The underlined word “stimulate” in the last but one paragraph is closest in meaning to _______.
