I break off a piece of candy and take pleasure in its sweet outside and the bitter, dark chocolate inside, thinking of my own life. Being raised by a single parent was a bitter-sweet     , which gave me motivation and ambition.
There were several years that have left an extremely bitter taste in my mouth .The first few months after my mother’s remarriage were sweet: baseball games, family trips to the mall, dinners and movies together. Then things     . Baseball became too expensive, and trips to the mall were     by days Emily and I spent lonely in our rooms under our stepfather’s     . Moreover, screaming matches between him and our mother always     dinner. We spent five years living in a family that had     a war field. Emily and I almost grew used to this situation. Then one evening, after another argument had     , we were left homeless . And later a friend of my mother let us stay with her. Instead of focusing on our economic problem, my mother     pushed me to struggle for success. She wanted me to lead a     life. She worked long hours every night to pay her bills.     , she would find time to read and play with Emily and me. Mom taught me the     of perseverance (堅(jiān)持不懈) and education.
And now, writing this essay with my favorite candy close at hand, I realize my family and I are at the best points of our lives. I haven’t let the trying times stop me from making     , both academically and personally. I know that a bitter environment can provide good learning experiences, and that success, even more than candy, is the sweetest treat of all.

Once upon a time there lived an old man in a nice cottage with a large garden. The old man was seen      his flowers all the time. They were so well-tended that every passer-by could not but       for a glance.
One day a young man went by the garden. He gazed at the splendid garden,      in admiration at the beauty of these sceneries. Then, suddenly he      the old gardener was blind.     , the young man asked, “Why are you busy tending these flowers every day which you can’t      in fact?” The old man smiled and answered that “ I can tell you           reasons. First I was a            when I was young, and I really like this job. Second, although I can’t see these flowers, yet I can       them. Third,I can smell sweetness of them. As to the last one, that’s     .
“Me? But you don’t know me,” responded the young man      .
“Yeah, it’s             that I don’t know you. But I know everyone knows flowers and would never      them down. I know the beauty of my garden will get many people into a good      . In the meantime, it also      a chance to me to have a word with you here and to enjoy the happiness these flowers have brought us.”
The old man’s      astonished me. The blind man grows flowers and   them as a link of minds so as to make      enjoy the sunshine in spring. Isn’t it one kind of happiness?
I believe every flower has     with which they can see the kindness of the man’s heart. The blind man grows flowers in his heart. Though     to see the beauty of blossoming, he surely can hear the voice of it, I suppose.

“A” for Attitude
English was always my favorite subject. In my freshman year of high school, I could write a killer composition. In my second year, my teacher         me to give spelling tests to the class. I had a       time of my junior year. Mrs Alexander         me to sit at her desk and take over the class when she had to leave the room. Only my senior English class was        , as we had a teacher right out of college who expected        work. Every student received a "C" or "D" grade the first quarter. But English was still my favorite subject.
I graduated from high school,       early and had children.        about my English, I often helped my kids with their English homework. And I wrote long articles and beautiful poetry as a columnist for a newspaper. Fifteen years later, I went to college, and because I had been an "A" student, I remained an "A" student. I        up to my own expectations.
Yesterday, I         my high school report cards when I was reading old papers. That bundle of report cards         back the old days. I remembered sitting in my advisor's office, explaining that I had always be       at  English, and recommending that I did not deserve a '"D" from that inexperienced teacher of my senior year. The  advisor was        but unable to change a(an)       . Reading through my old report cards revealed something else too. I wanted to       them or hide them. I was not an "A" student in high school English! Somehow, I had         myself of this, when the grades clearly reflected an average student with an        "A" or "B" but mostly "C” S.
Had I lived up to those grades and     myself according to those letters, I would have never confidently sought my writing career. Had I      my early grades instead of myself, I would have allowed my fear of failure to       enthusiasm and damage my creativity. Instead, I       my younger self as an "A" English student, except for that undeserved "D".
