There will be people in your life who won’t be very nice .They’ll tease you or try to hurt you because you’re different.

Be open to life anyway

Yes, you’ll find cruelty and suffering in your journey through life, but don’t let that close you to new things. 2 Be open to new things, new experiences, new people.

【題目】Frank Woolworth was born in Rodman, New York, in 1852. His family were very poor farmers, and there was never enough to eat. Frank decided he did not want to be a farmer. He took a short business course, and went to work as a salesman in a large city.

Woolworth realized he had a natural skill for showing goods to attract people’s interest, but he soon learned something more important. One day his boss told him to sell some odds and ends (小商品) for as much as he could get. Frank put all these things on one table with a sign which said FIVE CENTS EACH. People fought and pushed to buy the things and the table was soon cleared.

Soon afterwards, Woolworth opened his own store, selling goods at five and ten cents. But he had another lesson to learn before he became successful. That is, if you want to make money by selling low-price goods, you have to buy them in large quantities directly from the factories. Once, for example, Woolworth went to Germany and placed an order for knives. The order was so large that the factory had to keep running 24 hours a day for a whole year. In this way, the price of the knives was cut down by half.

By 1919, Woolworth had over 1000 stores in the US and Canada, and opened his first store in London. He made many millions and his name became famous throughout the world. He always run his business according to strict rules, of which the most important was: “ THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT.”

B. the knives were made in Germany, where labour (勞動(dòng)力) was cheap.

C. knives were ordered in large quantities directly from the factory.

D. the knives were produced in one factory.

【題目】How you calm yourself before giving a speech? Both modern research and centuries of experience from experienced(有經(jīng)驗(yàn)的)public speakers suggest some practical(實(shí)用的)advice.

1

Know to whom you’ll be speaking, and learn as much about your audience(聽眾) as you can. The more you can expect the kind of reaction your listeners will have to your speech, the more comfortable you’ll be in delivering your message. Be audience-centered rather than speaker-centered.

2

You will feel less nervous if you talk about something you are familiar with or have some personal experience of. Your comfort with the subject of the speech will be reflected in your delivery.

3

The better prepared you are, the less anxiety(焦慮)you will experience. Being prepared means that you have researched your topic and practiced your speech several times before you deliver it.

4

You are likely to feel the most nervous during the opening moments of your speech. Therefore, it is a good idea to have a clear plan for how you will start your speech. Being familiar with your introduction(介紹)will help you feel more comfortable about the entire speech. If you know how you will end your speech, you will have a safe harbor in case you lose your place. If you need to end your speech ahead of time, a well-delivered conclusion can permit you to make a graceful exit.

5

One of the symptoms(癥狀) of nervousness is a change in your breathing and heart rates. Nervous speakers tend to take short, shallow breaths. To help break the anxiety—reduce breathing pattern, consider taking a few slow deep breaths before you rise to speak.

A. Know your introduction and your conclusion(總結(jié)).

B. Channel(引導(dǎo)) your nervous energy.

C. Know your audience.

D. Use deep-breathing techniques.

E. Be prepared.

F. Select(選擇)an suitable topic.

G. To talk with your friends before giving a speech.

【題目】閱讀理解
Silence is unnatural to man.He begins life with a cry and ends it in stillness. In between he does all he can to make a noise in the world, and he fears silence more than anything else.Even his conversation is an attempt to prevent a fearful silence. If he is introduced to another person, and a number of pauses occur in the conversation,he regards himself as a failure,a worthless person, and is full of envy of the emptiest-headed chatterbox(喋喋不休的人). He knows that ninety nine percent of human conversation means no more than the buzzing of a fly,but he is anxious to join in the buzz and to prove that he is a man and not a waxwork figure(蠟塑人像).
The aim of conversation is not,for the most part,to communicate ideas;it is to keep up the buzzing sound. There are,it must be admitted, different qualities of buzz;there is even a buzz that is as annoying as the continuous noise made by a mosquito. But at a dinner party one would rather be a mosquito than a quiet person. Most buzzing, fortunately,is pleasant to the ear,and some of it is pleasant even to the mind.He would be a foolish man if he waited until he had a wise thought to take part in the buzzing with his neighbors.
Those who hate to pick up the weather as a conversational opening seem to me not to know the reason why human beings wish to talk.Very few human beings join in a conversation in the hope of learning anything new. Some of them are content if they are merely allowed to go on making a noise into other people's ears, though they have nothing to tell them except that they have seen two or three new plays or that they had food in a Swiss hotel. At the end of an evening, during which they have said nothing meaningful for a long time. They just prove themselves to be successful conservationists.
(1)According to the author, people make conversation to.
A.exchange ideas
B.prove their value
C.achieve success in life
D.overcome their fear of silence
(2)By “the buzzing of a fly”(Para.1),the author means “”.
A.the noise of an insect
B.a low whispering sound
C.meaningless talks
D.the voice of a chatterbox
(3)According to the passage, people usually talk to their neighbors .
A.about whatever they have prepared
B.about whatever they want to
C.in the hope of learning something new
D.in the hope of getting on well
(4)What is the author's purpose in writing the passage?
A.To discuss why people like talking about weather.
B.To encourage people to join in conversations.
C.To persuade people to stop making noises.
D.To explain why people keep talking.
