We lived in a very quiet neighborhood. One evening I heard a loud crash in the street.1that evening my wife had asked me to go to the store to get some soft drinks. It seemed like this would be a good time to let my teenage daughter Holly2her driving, so I sent her to the store in my truck.
At dinner my son talked about how much he liked my 3 I enjoyed having it, but I said: “Guy, my heart is not set on that truck. I like it but it is just metal and won’t last forever. Never set your heart on anything that won’t last.
After hearing the loud noise, the whole family ran outside. My son shouted: “ Dad! Dad, Holly crashed your truck.”
My heart sank and my mind was4with conflicting thoughts. Was anyone hurt? Who else was involved? As I ran to the door, I heard a voice in my heart say: “Here is a chance to show Holly 5you really love. She’ll never forget it.”
The accident had occurred in my own driveway. Holly had crashed my truck into our other vehicle, the family van (搬運車). In her inexperience, she had  6the brakes and the gas pedal. Holly was unhurt7but when I reached her, she was crying and saying:“Oh, Dad, I’m sorry. I know how much you love this truck.” I held her in my arms as she cried.
Later that week a friend stopped by and asked what had happened to my truck. I told her the whole story. Her eyes moistened(濕潤) and she said: “That happened to me when I was a girl. I borrowed my dad’s car and8
Over 40 years later, she still felt the pain of the night. It was a deep wound on her 9.
I remember how sad Holly was the night she crashed our truck, and how I comforted her. One day, when Holly 10on her life, I want her to know that I love her a thousand times more than any piece of 11.
I repaired the van, but the dent(凹陷) in my truck is still there today. Every day it reminds me of what really12

Furthermore, I will even 2 help and when my offers are refused, I am 3 willing to walk away. And all these changes came from a disaster on an island.
Sometimes a person’s independence is a 4 of pride, daring, stubbornness and luck. I used to be too 5 since I was little. I was once a traveler who never asked for 6, choosing instead to struggle with maps and signs until I found my way.

Another secret of animals’ survival is telepathy(心靈感應(yīng)). This sense becomes atrophied(衰退) in man, but a(n) 1thought-communication functions in animals. He did not know when I was coming back, no person knew. But Elsa knew. On the morning of my 8she sat down at the entrance and wouldn’t make any 9until I arrived in the evening.
I have known this kind of thought-communication with the animal with whom I’ve lived. When Elsa died, I woke in the night, knowing what had happened, even though I was several miles away. The same thing 10later with one of Pippa’s cubs.
I don’t 11this sensitivity with my own kind. Feel far more in tune with what is going on when I am in the bush than when I am in London on Nairobi. New genetic analysis has revealed that many Amazon tree species are likely to survive human-made climate warming in the coming century, contrary to previous findings that temperature increases would cause them to die out. A study, 1 in the latest edition of Ecology and Evolution, reveals the 2 age of some Amazonian tree species -- more than 8 million years -- and 3 shows that they have survived previous periods as warm as many of the global warming imagined periods 4 for the year 2100.
The authors write that, having survived warm periods in the past, the trees will 5 survive future warming, provided there are no other major environmental changes. 6 extreme droughts and forest fires will impact Amazonia as temperatures 7, the trees will stand the direct impact of higher temperatures. The authors 8 that as well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions to minimize the risk of drought and fire, conservation policy should remain 9 on preventing deforestation(采伐森林)for agriculture and mining.
The study disagrees with other recent researches which predicted tree species’ extinctions 10 relatively small increases in global average air temperatures.
Study co-author Dr Simon Lewis (UCL Geography) said the 11 were good news for Amazon tree species, but warned that drought and over-exploitation of the forest remained major 12 to the Amazon’s future.
Dr Lewis said: “The past cannot be compared directly with the future. while tree species seem likely to 13 higher air temperatures than today, the Amazon forest is being transformed for agriculture and 14, and what remains is being degraded by logging, and increasingly split up by fields and roads.
“Species will not move as freely in today’s Amazon as they did in previous warm periods, when there was no human 15. Similarly, today’s climate change is extremely fast, making comparisons with slower changes in the past 16.”
“With a clearer 17 of the relative risks to the Amazon forest, we 18 that direct human impacts -- such as forest clearances for agriculture or mining -- should remain a key point of conservation policy. We also need more aggressive 19 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in order to make minimum the risk of drought and fire impacts and 20 the future of most Amazon tree species.”

As she came closer, I saw what she held and 15 welled down. "These are for you, " she said and placed three beautiful yellow roses in my arms. She placed a gentle kiss on my cheek, then smiled again. I wanted to tell her what the roses 16, but still unable to speak. I watched as she walked away as tears clouded my 17. I looked down at the beautiful roses and found it almost 18. How did she know?
Suddenly the 19 seemed so clear. I wasn't alone. "Oh, Bob, you haven't 20me, have you?" I whispered, with tears in my eyes. He was still with me, and she was his angel.
