5．Let's say your company has a problem and needs a creative solution．A common approach is to gather your best people in a room to brainstorm．Ideas are batted around，and，in theory，the best answer emerges．
But it doesn't always work that way．Plenty of research has proven the limitations of brainstorming as members can only talk in turn．Groups tend to generate fewer ideas than individuals．
Psychologist Tony McCaffrey has a solution to our troubled search for solutions．He calls it"brainswarming"，which he has trademarked．His pilot research has found that Brainswarming generates more than four times as many ideas as brainstorming．
A group starts with a large surface-perhaps a whiteboard-and puts a goal at the top of it．A few resources to address the problem are listed at the bottom．No talking is allowed．
While it may seem silly not to talk，there are several improvements with McCaffrey's approach．
There's a natural division of labor as people can focus on what they're best at．A top-down thinker might work near the top of the chart，while others may work at the bottom on thinking of potential resources．This alleviates（減輕） the inefficiency of traditional brainstorming，where the conversation is focused on a single topic．
With brainswarming，those who are shy aren't as likely to get bored like in traditional conversations，where the outgoing people tend to grab the floor．All ideas stand on equal footing．Everyone can place their Post-It Notes（便利貼） on the board．
Worthy ideas brought up early in a meeting won't be forgotten as a wealth of new ideas crowd the conversation later．These ideas will always be on the board，for everyone to notice and consider．

4．The most complex object known to humanity is the human brain-and not only is it complex，but it is one of the few natural phenomena that science has no consciousness of．To try to replicate （復制） something that is so poorly understood may therefore seem like pride．But you have to start somewhere，and International Business Machines （IBM） and the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne （EPFL），in Switzerland，propose to start by replicating"in silico"，one of the brain's building blocks．
In a partnership announced，the two organizations said they would be working together to build a simulation （模擬） of a structure known as a neo-cortical（新大腦皮質的）column on a type of IBM supercomputer that is currently used to study the molecular functioning of genes．If that works，they plan to use more powerful computers to link such simulated columns together into something that mimics（模仿） a brain．
In a real brain，a neo-cortical column is a cylindrical（圓柱形的）element about a third of a millimeter in diameter and three millimeters long．It is these columns，arranged side by side like the cells of a honeycomb，which make up the famous"grey matter"that has become shorthand for human intelligence．The Blue Gene/L supercomputer that will be used for the simulation consists of enough independent processors for each to be programmed to mimic an individual nerve cell in a column．
The EPFL's contribution to the Blue Brain Project will be to create a digital description of how the columns behave．The database from its Brain Mind Institute will provide the raw material for the simulation．Biologists and computer scientists will then connect the artificial nerve cells up in a way that mimics nature．They will do so by assigning electrical properties（電能）to them，and telling them how to communicate with each other and how they should modify their connections with one another depending on their activity．
That will be no mean feat．Even a single nerve cell is complicated，not least because each one has about 10，000connections with others．And nerve cells come in great variety-relying，for example，on different chemical transmitters to carry messages across those connections．Eventually，however，a digital representation of an entire column Should occur．
Assuming that the growth of computing power continues to follow Moore's Law，the leader of IBM's side thinks it should be practical to mimic an entire human brain in silico this way in ten to fifteen years．Such an artificial brain would，of course，be a powerful research tool．It would allow neurological experiments that currently take days in a"web lab"to be conducted in seconds．The researchers hope that their simulated brain will reveal the secrets of how certain psychiatric and neurological，disorders develop．But that is probably not the real reason for doing it．The most interesting question，surely，is whether such an artificial brain will be intelligent，or conscious，or both．

3．Different people may find that different learning methods work best for them．While some would turn to tutoring in order to get better grades，others choose to join study groups．In fact，many universities encourage their students to form study groups and make good use of them．
"Two heads are better than one．"That's the simple idea behind study groups．By participating in a study group，students can benefit from some of their best academic resources：other students．They get to pick each other's brains and improve their own understanding of different problems．Moreover，study groups can create the slightly tense atmosphere in which it's good to study．For example，some students tend to procrastinate （拖延） when they are studying by themselves； however，by joining a study group，they get to observe their peers who are working diligently and are likely to thus have motivation for working harder．
Study groups work best when they are small，but not too small-four to five participants is about right．And it's necessary to make sure everyone has the same goal，to prepare for a particular test，to discuss class readings or to review the week's lecture notes．Besides，socializing in the group would make studying more fun as long as it took up only a small portion of group study time．
In addition，to maximize the efficiency，some study groups like to assign members certain roles，and thus efficiency will be promoted．Besides an organizer，who gets group members to agree to a common purpose and a convenient time and place，there often is a group member playing the role of a source-seeker，whose duty is to remind group members to identify their sources．For instance，when a group member says"I read somewhere that…，"the source-seeker should ask for specifics．This person reminds the group that it's important to know who said what and where it was said．And a gatekeeper，who tries to make sure that all group members are participating，may ask a direct question to help a shy person participate，or find a way to get a dominating member to listen．

1．When I was going home to India last year，I called up my mother to ask if she wanted anything from China．
When India had not opened  up its markets to the world，I carried suitcase full of dark glasses and jeans．Thankfully，we can get all these anywhere in India now．
As long as I can remember，she didn't even drink India tea．
I dutifully bought a big packet of Longjing and headed home to hear the story．My mother and her brother，both regular newspaper readers，believed that Chinese green tea was the wonder drug for all illness．
At the turn of the century，China was not really familiar to the average Indian．It was a strange country．
How things change!And how soon!
Now every town of any size seems to have a"China Market"．And everyone is talking about China．
The government of India has planned to send a team to China to see how things are done．A minister once said that India must open the doors for more foreign investment and such a step would"work wonders as it did for China"．
But it's a two-way street．I just heard about a thousand Shenzhen office workers who have gone to Bangalore to train in software．Meanwhile，all the India IT majors are setting up a strong presence in China．
No wonder that trade，which was only in the millions just ten years ago，is expected to hit about US 15billion for last year and US20 billion by 2008，a goal set by both government．
No wonder，my colleague wrote some weeks ago about this being the Sino-Indian century as the two countries started on January 1 the Sino-Indian Friendship Year．
But what is still wonder to me is my mother drinking Chinese tea．

Jiading----Centuries of History，Decades of Change
A book entitled"Jiading-Centuries of History，Decades of Change"by American writer Kate Baker has recently been published in Shanghai．New book launch was held last week at the Old China Hand Style，a major（41）D．sponsor of a series of walking guide books called"Beyond the Concession：Six Walks in Shanghai's Other Districts．"And Baker's"Jiading"runs the fourth among the six．
