【題目】 My first career had been related to audiology (聽力學)---one that allowed me to work part time while tending my growing family. But when my children grew up and left home, I found myself longing to be outside, not in a soundproof room in the hospital.

So I began attending classes at the local university, hoping that might lead me to a new career. 1 “What gave you pleasure as a child?” the counselor (顧問) asked. I thought for a while before responding, “Playing outside in the woods.” Our discussion eventually led to a second master’s degree, this one in zoology, and the job as a naturalist at a state park. I was 44 years old. 2

But as I climbed the career ladder, my time in the field disappeared. I was chained to a computer screen. In the back of my mind, the career counselor’s question sounded again. “3

Shortly thereafter, an opportunity presented itself: a 4-month field research project at a university in the Netherlands. I found that field research allowed me to play in the woods again, but with a new purpose.

At the end of the project, I was invited to participate in the “sandwich” Ph.D. program, in which students do research in their home country while receiving support and instruction in the Netherlands. I was 60 years old. I didn’t think that earning a Ph. D. would further my career. 4

Still, my colleagues raised their eyebrows. “5“ they asked, “It is all about the journey,” I responded.

A. What gave you pleasure as a child?

B. I also went to see a career counselor.

C. What do you intend to do with a Ph.D.?

D. But I wanted to follow my new passion.

E. But when it was no longer right, I changed direction.

F. Can you believe you’re actually getting paid to have this much fun?

G. And I was delighted to once again experience the joy of being outdoors.

【題目】 When you are sitting in the car, do you ever notice the drivers looking over their shoulders or side to side in the car? Well, they are doing this to check their blind spots! Blind spots take driving extremely difficult and increase the potential for car accidents.

Fourteen-year-old Alaina Gassler from Pennsylvania noticed her mother struggling with blind spots while driving their family car. So she came up with an ingenious solution that won the first place and $25,000 in the Broadcom Masters Competition.

Blind spots are the areas around the car that cannot be directly observed by the driver. There are two kinds of blind spots---on the back of the car that cannot be seen with mirrors, and blind spots at the front of the car as well.

When a driver is changing lanes, he has to look over his shoulder through the side windows to make sure that there is no vehicle in the blind spot. This invisible area is big enough to hide a car!

The other blind spot is created in the front by the A-pillar(柱子)---the material on either side on the windshield(擋風玻璃)that holds the glass and forms the frame of the car. In some cars, this pillar can be quite thick. Usually, people or cyclists can be hidden by this pillar.

Alaina's design was to get rid of the blind spot created by the front A-pillar of the car, the one that helps hold up the windshield.

She put a camera on the outside passenger side of the car which then sent the photos to a projector above the drivers' head. Then, she covered the inside of the pillar in reflective fabric onto which the image was projected. Basically, her device made the pillar "see through" and removed the blind spot on that side of the car.

Alnina's solution is very creative and could be improved by using LCD displays that will make it easier to see during day time as well.

1What can be learned about blind spots during driving?

A.They call for careful driving.B.They make driving thrilling.

C.They are many in kinds.D.They can't be get rid of.

2Which of the following can replace the underlined word "ingenious" in paragraph 2?

A.interestingB.creative

C.inspiringD.invisible

3How did Alaina solve the problem?

A.By improving the A-pillar.B.By using a mirror on the outside of the A-pillar.

C.By relying on LCD displays.D.By using a camera to capture images.

4What's the best title for the text?

A.An Introduction to Blind SpotsB.A Warning About the Road Safety

C.A Teen's Creative Solution to Blind SpotsD.Scientific Research on Blind Spots

If there is one word to describe the progress made in the last 100 years, it’s connectedness. From the telephone to the radio to the TV to the Internet, we have found ways to bring us all closer together, enablingconstant worldly access..

I don’t think I need to highlight the benefits of all this. But the downsides are also beginning to show. Beyond the current talk about privacy and data collection, there is perhaps an even more detrimental side-effect here: We now live in a world where we’re connected to everything except ourselves. According to Pascal, we fear

the silence of existence, and we dread boredom and instead choose aimless distraction and use the noise of the world to block out the discomfort of dealing with ourselves.

However, we ignore the fact that never facing ourselves is why we feel lonely an anxious in spite of being

so intimately connected to everything else around us.

Fortunately, there is a solution. The only way to avoid being ruined by this is to face it. It’s to let the boredom take you where it wants so you can deal with whatever it is that is really going on with your sense of self. That’s when you’ll hear yourself think, and learn to engage the parts of you that are masked by distraction.

The beauty of this is that, once you cross that initial barrier, you realize that being alone isn’t so bad. Boredom can provide its own stimulation.

When you surround yourself with moments of solitude and stillness, you become intimately familiar with your environment in a way that forced stimulation doesn’t allow. The world becomes richer, the layers start to peel back, and you see things for what they really are, in all their wholeness, in all their contradictions, and in all their unfamiliarity.

You learn that there are things you are capable of paying attention to than just what makes the most noise on the surface. Just because a quiet room doesnt scream with excitement like the idea of immersing yourself in a movie or a TV show doesn’t mean there isn’t depth to explore there.

Sometimes, the direction that this solitude leads you in can be unpleasant, especially when it comes to introspection (內(nèi)。---your thoughts and your feelings, your doubts and your hopes—but in the long term, it’s far more pleasant than running away from it all without even realizing what you are.

Being alone and connecting inwardly is a skill nobody ever teaches us. That’s ironic because its more important than most of the ones they do.

Solitude may not be the solution to everything, but it certainly is a start.

The Cost of Connectedness

Introduction

1 the development of IT has brought us all closer together than ever before, we 2to connect ourselves while connected to everything.

●We feel so uncomfortable when dealing with ourselves that we 4 from it all and choose to be aimlessly distracted by the noise of the world.

●We often ignore the fact that never facing ourselves is to 5 for our feeling lonely and anxious.

The 6 to the problem

●You can deal with whatever is going on with your sense of self.

●You’ll hear yourself, think, and learn to engage what is masked by distraction.

●Being alone isn’t so bad. 7 , you'll be stimulated by boredom.

●The world becoming richer and ,the layers starting to peel back, you'll have 8 views about what you see.

●You'll find yourself capable of being attentive to some things and 9 in depth beyond noise and scream.

Conclusion

●Solitude is the first step you should take to save yourself from being ruined by 10 and anxiety.
