How much do you know the development of the newspaper? Before the first century, there was no
newspaper at all in the world. The news was spread only by mouth. And later, people began to write
newspapers. But the first newspapers were written by hand and put up on the walls in public places. The
first daily newspaper was started in Rome in 59 BC. Europe didn't have regularly published newspapers
until 1609, when one was started in Germany.
The first regularly published newspaper in English language was printed in Amsterdam in 1620. In the
next year, an English newspaper was started in London and was published once a week. The first daily
English newspaper was the Daily Courant. It came out in March 1702.
In 1609, Benjamin Harris printed the first American newspaper in Boston. But not long after it was
first published, the government stopped the paper. Five years later, John Com bell started the Boston
newsletter, and the first newspaper was published daily in the American colonies(殖民地).
By 1765, the colonies had more than thirty daily newspapers. There are now about 1800 daily papers
in the United States.
Today, newspapers are published everywhere. To many people, they can't go without reading
newspapers for a day. As a group, however, English language newspapers have the largest circulation
(銷售量) in the world. But the largest circulation of a newspaper is that of the Japanese newspaper
Asihimbun. It sells more than eleven million copies every day. Newspapers are playing an important part
in people's life.
