【解析】

試題分析:考查主謂一致以及時(shí)態(tài)。在英語中如果主語由together with/with/rather than/as well as/except/in addition to/apart from等連接時(shí),謂語動(dòng)詞需要和前面的主語保持一致,故本句謂語動(dòng)詞應(yīng)和Dr Smith 保持一致,也是說答案在A或C中產(chǎn)生。根據(jù)本句時(shí)間狀語this winter vacation可知,本句時(shí)態(tài)為一般現(xiàn)在時(shí),所以選擇A。句意為:Dr Smith和他的妻子女兒們今年寒假將會(huì)來參觀北京。

Every one of the gymnasts who went to National Qualifiers (國家冠軍賽資格賽) showed up with that goal in mind. Everyone gave it their all.

And I hate admitting it, but I was an exception. I did not do my best. Not for the ribbon exercise, nor for the club exercise. Knowing that I could have reached a little further to catch my ribbon, focused a little more so the stick wouldn’t slip through my fingers, tried a little harder to clean up those errors, but I didn’t, still bothers me.

After my disappointing competition, I tried my best to keep my eyes dry. But soon tears burned the edges of my eyes, and as I blinked, the first tear rolled down my cheek. Even though I angrily wiped my tears away before she looked at me, the evidence of my self-pity session presented itself clearly in the form of dirty makeup and reddened eyes.

My mom hated to see me cry, especially because I had no right or reason to. I had messed up — that wasn’t anyone’s fault but mine — and crying wouldn’t help at all. “Why are you crying, Amanda?” she asked, perhaps more pointedly (尖刻地) than intended, but I heard the concern in her voice. Unable to form all the emotions into words, I just looked away and avoided her questions.

“Tell me now why you’re crying.” Her voice this time wasn’t as gentle as it was before; it was filled with frustration and impatience. “Why are you crying?” she whispered again, but this time her voice was shaky and flooded with pain. This was the first time I’d ever seen my mom cry; my mom, who was always so strong and was there to encourage me through the roughest times, was now crying, and I was the reason for it. Finding my voice, I tentatively asked, “Why are you crying?”

She looked at me and answered exactly what I was afraid to hear, “I hate to see you hurting yourself.” So it was my fault. I had put those tears in her eyes. I had filled her with pain, with helplessness and with sadness.

I’ll never forget her pained expression. It forced me to realize how shortsighted and close-minded I’d been. I decided that no matter what happens in the future, I will never lose myself to regret.

1. Why did Amanda feel regretful after the competition?

A. Because she wasn’t admitted to the club.

B. Because she dropped her ribbon suddenly.

C. Because she broke the rule of the competition.

D. Because she didn’t try her best to compete.

2. What did Amanda try to hide on the way back?

A. Her silent tears. B. The disappointing scores.

C. Her dirty makeup. D. The evidence of failure.

3.Which words reflect the change of the mother’s emotions?

A. Painful — impatient — concerned

B. Concerned — frustrated — painful

C. Satisfied — painful — frustrated

D. Frustrated — angry — painful

4.What did Amanda determine to do?

A. Never cry in face of her mom.

B. Never compete as a gymnast.

C. Never involve herself in self-pity.

D. Never make up before games.

5. The best title of the passage is probably _________.

A. My painful experience as a gymnast

B. The tears I wiped away for my mother

C. The fiercest competition I lost

D. The worst thing I ever felt: regret

Sometimes it is difficult to talk to taxi drivers. They must give all their attention to the road as they work out the shortest way to the place where you are going. However, passengers from Wangfujing were in surprise when they took a taxi. The driver just would not stop talking - in English.

Organized by the Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy, “Dare to Speak” examines if Chinese people will speak English in “real-life” situations.

Matthew Knowles, an acting student from South Carolina at Beijing Film Academy, acted the part as the “driver”. He collected six passengers on Saturday morning, most of whom were female white-collar (白領(lǐng))workers.

“Of course they were surprised at first, wondering why I’m driving a taxi, and wondering whether this is a real taxi, but then most of them were pretty willing to speak,” he said. Knowles said he was also surprised by his “passengers”. “Apart from my first ‘passenger’, who could speak very little English, all the rest spoke English very well, and it was fun to communicate with them,” he said, adding that some “passengers” were quite talkative.

The “foreign taxi driver” project was just one of the “Dare to Speak” activities, which have been going on since the end of October. Other projects included a foreign store owner near a high school in Beijing, a cook in a Shanghai university canteen. They were testing the willingness of Chinese people, especially students and white-collar workers, to speak to foreigners in English.

Rong Xin, senior manager of IELTS (雅思) with the British Embassy, said they hoped to let IELTS takers in China know that communication is the ultimate goal of IELTS.

“We hope that more and more IELTS takers in China can realize the importance of communicating in English in real life, instead of just getting high test scores,” she said.

Ning Zetao has become China’s new swimming star due to his amazing performance at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon(仁川), South Korea.

With already two gold medals in hand, the 21-year-old clocked 47.70 seconds in the 100m freestyle, setting a new Asian record. This result has been recognized by FINA as the world’s third best time this year, fast enough to have won a gold medal in last year’s Barcelona World Championships.

“It is my first international event,” said Ning, who later won a fourth gold medal in Incheon. “I am happy that my results are pretty close to my personal best.”

Born in the central Chinese city of Zhengzhou,Ning entered the local team at the age of 11 and joined the navy team in 2007.He first caught people’s attention in 2009 when he finished eighth in the 200m individual medley at the National Games.

Nevertheless, Ning suffered from bone infection in both knees for a long time, which made him unable to train hard on his kicks.

He also had an indigestion problem and had to eat “soft” food which is easy to digest. His poor stomach even made it impossible for him to complete week-long full time training.

But the young swimmer never gives up. His idol is the great Russian swimmer Alexander Popov, who continued to win Olympic gold medals after he was stabbed on a street. Ning said, “He was a real fighter and I need to learn from him.”

Taken better care of by coaches and doctors, Ning can now train as normally as others. And that is why he can get today’s achievements.

The gold medals at the Asian Games also boosted the confidence of the new swimming star, who hopes to enter the national team and compete for China in more international events.

“Chinese men’s swimmers have never been placed among top eight in the short-distance freestyle,” he said. “I hope I can do it, just like what Sun Yang did in the mid-long distance freestyle.”

B. Ning is good at both 100m and 200m freestyle
