It happened many years ago, and I was in high school then. Being a student from a 36  family, I had to work on weekends to make some extra money that my family couldn’t really 37   to give me, and one day after work I lost my wallet.
My old car 38  gas in the back. I paid for the gas and then put my wallet on the bumper(保險杠),and drove off. I hadn’t even had time to 39  it when my phone rang and an old man asked me  40  I had lost my wallet. I checked the  41  of my jacket and to my horror, I had. He asked me to tell him how much money was 42  it, and I told him. He then told me where to  43  my wallet.
As I drove into his driveway, I  44  that his car was for the  45 . I was thinking that there was no way this man could 46  get out of hid car and get my wallet off the 47 . He had to pull over, 48 in his wheelchair, lower the lift, and then pick it up, I was  49 .
I knocked on the 50  and he told me to come in. I thanked him like 10 times for 51   my wallet. While I didn’t want to make him angry by offering him 52 , I really felt like offering something. So I asked him if there was anything I could do to repay his 53 , and he said, “Just pass  54  on.” I really wanted to thank him, so I 55  promised I would.

He often tells me something about the city where he lives now and his studies in the school. So I can know what happens to him.

While Andrew was getting ready for work one Friday morning, he announced to his wife that he had finally decided to ask his boss for a salary raise. All day Andrew felt nervous and anxious as he thought about the upcoming showdown. What if Mr Larchmont refused to grant his request? Andrew had worked so hard in the last 18 months and landed some great accounts for Braer and Hopkins Advertising Agency. Of course, he deserved a wage increase.
The thought of walking into Larchmont’s office left Andrew weak in the knees. Late in the afternoon he was finally courageous enough to approach his superior. To his delight and surprise, the ever-frugal(一向節(jié)儉的)Harvey Larchmont agreed to give Andrew a raise!
Andrew arrived home that evening—despite breaking all city and state speed limits—to a beautiful table set with their best china, and candles lit. His wife, Tina, had prepared a delicate meal including his favorite dishes. Immediately he figured someone from the office had tipped her off!
Next to his plate Andrew found a beautiful lettered note. It was from his wife. It read: “Congratulations, my love! I knew you’d get the raise! I prepared this dinner to show just how much I love you. I am so proud of your accomplishments!” He read it and stopped to reflect on how sensitive and caring Tina was.
After dinner, Andrew was on his way to the kitchen to get dessert when he observed that a second card had slipped out of Tina’s pocket onto the floor. He bent forward to pick it up. It read: “Don’t worry about not getting the raise! You do deserve one! You are a wonderful provider and I prepared this dinner to show you just how much I love you even though you did not get the increase.”
Suddenly tears swelled in Andrew’s eyes. Total acceptance! Tina’s support for him was not conditional upon his success at work.

Talking behind someone’s back is considered to be rude and mean. Such a conversation can cover all kinds of criticism, from their looks to their work and personality.
The other day at lunch I was with a group of colleagues, and we were talking about our boss. She is the new headmaster of our middle school.
We talked about how kind she is to us. She handwrites notes to wish us happy holidays or to thank us for jobs well done. She checks on us when she knows we’re facing difficulties outside school with our health or with our families. We talked about the good role model that she is for the young women in our school and the fair but firm way she treats students and parents.
I thought about this after lunch. Sometimes we have the good fortune to be part of another kind of “talking behind someone’s back”. And too often when we say something good about someone behind their backs, they never know about it! That night, I sent her an email to report the conversation. She replied by saying how much she appreciated hearing about this, and how it made a bright spot in a tough week of testing.
Watch for your next opportunity to be the reporter! Make sure you tell them about the nice things said behind their backs! Because how will they know unless we tell them?
小題1:What do you conclude from the text the writer might be?
A.A studentB.A teacherC.A parentD.A boss
小題2:What is the text mainly about?
A.Conversations about othersB.Rude and mean talking

A.Don’t talk behind others’ back

C.Do tell the person about the nice things said behind his back

In 1933 an unknown American called Clarence Nash went to see the film-maker Walter Disney. He had an unusual voice and he wanted to work in Disney’s cartoon film for children. When Walter Disney heard Nash’s voice, he said, “Stop! That’s our duck!”
The duck was the now-famous Donald Duck, who first appeared in 1934 in the film, The Wise Little Hen. Donald lived in an old houseboat and worn his sailor jacket and hat.
