Three Boys and a Dad
Brad closed the door slowly as Sue left home to visit her mother.Expecting a whole day to relax,he was thinking whether to read the newspaper or watch his favourite TV talk show on his first day off in months.“This will be like a walk in the park,”he’d told his wife.“I’ll look after the kids, and you can go visit your mom.”
Things started well, but just after eight o’clock, his three little “good kids”—Mike,Randy, and Alex—came down the stairs in their night clothes and shouted “breakfast, daddy.”When food had not appeared within thirty seconds,Randy began using his spoon on Alex’s head as if it were a drum.Alex started to shout loudly in time to the beat(節(jié)拍).Mike chanted “Where’s my toast, where’s my toast” in the background.Brad realised his newspaper would have to wait for a few seconds.
Life became worse after breakfast.Mike wore Randy’s underwear on his head.Randy locked himself in the bathroom, while Alex shouted again because he was going to wet his pants.Nobody could find clean socks, although they were before their very eyes.Someone named “Not Me” had spilled a whole glass of orange juice into the basket of clean clothes.Brad knew the talk show had already started.
By ten o’clock, things were out of control.Alex was wondering why the fish in the jar refused his bread and butter.Mike was trying to show off his talent by decorating the kitchen wall with his colour pencils.Randy, thankfully, appeared to be reading quietly in the family room, but closer examination showed that he was eating apple jam straight from the bottle with his hands.Brad realised that the talk show was over and reading would be impossible.
At exactly 11∶17,Brad called the daycare centre(日托所).“I suddenly have to go into work and my wife’s away. Can I bring the boys over in a few minutes?”The answer was obviously “yes” because Brad was smiling.(2012·陜西,B)

小題2:Which of the following did Randy do?
A.Drawing on the wall.B.Eating apple jam.
C.Feeding the fish.D.Reading in a room.
小題3:Why did Brad ask the daycare centre for help?
A.Because he wanted to clean up his house.
B.Because he suddenly had to go to his office.
C.Because he found it hard to manage his boys.
D.Because he had to take his wife back home.
小題4:This text is developed________.
A.by spaceB.by comparison
C.by processD.by time

小題1:C
小題2:B
小題3:C
小題4:D

小題1: C
解析 推理判斷題。根據(jù)第一段對Brad的心理描寫,尤其是信息句“Expecting a whole day to relax,he was thinking whether to read the newspaper or watch his favourite TV talk show on his first day off in months.”
根據(jù)第四段的描述可以看出,A項是Mike做的;B項是Randy做的;C項是Alex做的;D項是對文中信息“Randy, thankfully, appeared to be reading quietly in the family room, but closer examination showed that he was eating apple jam straight from the bottle with his hands.”的曲解。
小題3: C
解析 推理判斷題。文中諸多關鍵字眼如“Life became worse”與“things were out of control”都表明是因為管理不了孩子們,Brad才把他們送去日托所的,故C項正確。
小題4: D
解析 細節(jié)理解題。第一段:Brad closed the door slowly as Sue left home→第二段:breakfast→第三段:after breakfast→第四段:by ten o’clock→第五段:at exactly 11∶17,由此可以看出本文是按照事件發(fā)展的時間先后順序來敘述的。

Pessimistic, anxious and depressed people may have a higher risk of dementia (癡呆),US researchers reported on Thursday.
A study of a group of 3,500 people showed that those who scored high for pessimism on a standardized personality test had a 30 percent increased risk of developing dementia 30 to 40 years later.
Those scoring very high on both anxiety and pessimism scales had a 40 percent higher risk, the study showed.
“There appears to be a doseresponse pattern. That is,the higher the scores, the higher the risk of dementia,”Dr Yonas Geda,a neuropsychiatrist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester,Minnesota who led the study, said in a statement.
Geda and his colleagues looked at the medical records of 3,500 men and women who lived near the clinic between 1962 and 1965.
They all took the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory,a standard personality and life experience test,Geda’s team told a meeting of the American Academy of Neurology in Miami.
In 2004,the team interviewed the participants or family members.
Those who scored higher for anxiety and pessimism on the test were more likely,as a group,to have developed dementia by 2004,including Alzheimer’s disease and vascular (血管的) dementia.
This did not mean a person who is pessimistic could assume he or she has a higher risk of developing dementia.
“One has to be cautious in interpreting a study like this,”Geda said.
“One cannot make a leap from group level data to the individual.Certainly the last thing you want to do is to say,‘Well,I am a pessimist;thus,I am doomed to develop dementia 20 or 30 years later,’because this may end up becoming a selffulfilling prophecy (預言).”
And there is NOT any specific way to prevent dementia, although many studies have shown that a healthy diet, exercise, keeping active in other ways, doing puzzles and other activities lower the risk.
小題1:What is the passage mainly about?
A.It is impossible for people to avoid dementia.
B.People who always have negative feelings may have a higher risk of getting dementia.
C.If we have a healthy diet,we would have no chance of getting dementia.
D.A person who is pessimistic has a higher risk of developing dementia.
小題2:According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?
A.There are many ways to prevent dementia effectively.
B.A person who is pessimistic is sure to get dementia.
C.Those who lead a happy life will not get dementia when they are old.
D.Those who scored high for pessimism might have a higher risk of dementia.
小題3:Which of the following does NOT help reduce the risk of getting dementia according to the passage?
A.A healthy diet.B.Proper exercises.
C.Doing puzzles.D.Getting up early.
小題4:Which of the following words is not close to the meaning of the word “pessimistic”?
A.Cheerless.B.Optimistic.
C.Unhappy.D.Upset.

The earth is the only planet that scientists think has life. Why does the earth have life while the other planets (行星) don't? For one thing, the earth is just the right temperature. As the_third_planet from the sun, the earth seems to be just the right distance away. The planets which are closer to the sun are hot that their surfaces bake (烘烤) in the sun. The farthest planets are cold balls.
When the earth developed — which scientists believe may have happened about 4 billion years ago — many gases covered the earth. The gases caused the earth to be hot. But something wonderful happened. The temperature was just right for thick clouds to form. It rained very hard for a very long time. This gave the earth its oceans. Water made it possible for plants to grow. The plants created oxygen in the atmosphere. Oxygen is the gas that humans and animals breathe.
Only one other planet in the solar system seems to be something like the earth. That planet is Mars (火星). Mars is smaller than the earth, and it is quite a bit cooler. But it is not too cold for humans. On some days, the temperatures are as low as a winter day in the northern United States. If you wore a special space suit, you could walk around on Mars. You would have to bring your own air to breathe, the air on Mars is too thin to breathe.
Mars has the largest volcano (火山) in the solar system. It is sixteen miles high. The highest volcano on the earth is five miles high. The most unexpected (未預測到的) sight on Mars is dried up river beds. Scientists believe that Mars was once much better than it is now. Does this mean there could have been living things on Mars? Scientists are not sure, but there has been no sign so far.
小題1:Which of the following is NOT the reason that the earth has life?
A.The earth is just the right temperature.
B.The volcanos on earth are lower than those on Mars.
C.There is oxygen in the atmosphere of the earth.
D.The earth seems to be just the right distance away from the sun.
小題2:The underlined phrase “the third planet” in the first paragraph refers to ________.
A.the SunB.the Moon
C.the EarthD.the Mars
小題3:Which of the following about the Mars is NOT true?
A.There could have been living things on Mars.
B.Mars has the largest volcano in the solar system.
C.There is almost no oxygen in the air on Mars.
D.Mars is smaller than the earth, and it is quite a bit cooler.

What’s the greenest place in America? If you answered something like the warm sunlight of Santa Barbara, you’d be wrong. The greenest place in America has almost no sign of nature— the buildings outnumber the trees— and the air isn’t all that great. What it has is density(密度)and efficiency— the twin qualities that finally define green in the global warming time. Applying those standards, the greenest place in America is New York City— particularly, the overcrowded, overpriced island of Manhattan, which produces 30% less per-capita(人均)greenhouse gas than that of the nation.
It’s that density that makes Manhattan so green. Manhattan’s population density is 800 times the national average. Density comes with negatives, certainly— small living spaces, air pollution— but it also enables amazing efficiencies.Over 80% of Manhattanites travel to work by public transport, by bike or on foot— compared to an average of about 8% everywhere else in the country. Manhattan’s apartment buildings are far more energy-efficient than the houses in the suburbs.
What’s true of New York City is more or less true of other American urban areas, which explains why a growing part of the environmental movement now focuses on greening cities, hoping to attract more Americans back downtown. There’s an effort to make cities more sustainable(可持續(xù)的),by improving public transport, reducing air pollution and upgrading energy efficiency. But even more important, it is quite urgent to change decades of government policies that have been in favor of the suburbs, with disastrous consequences for energy, the environment and the climate.
That’s exactly the difficult point. For all the high efficiency and convenience and richness of living in a city, there are disadvantages too.New York, for example, has some of the highest childhood asthma(哮喘)rates in the U.S.
So it’s welcome news that New York has continued to push its P1aNYC scheme, a long-term program to make the city greener and more sustainable over the next decades. Recently it announced an update to the plan that includes phasing out heavy heating oils in New York City apartment buildings by 2030,to be replaced with cleaner natural gas.

Educators are seriously concerned about the high rate of dropouts among the doctor of philosophy candidates and the consequent loss of talent to a nation in need of Ph. D. s. Some have placed the dropouts loss as high as 50 percent. The extent of the loss was, however, largely a matter of expert guessing. Last week a well-rounded study was published. It was published. It was based on 22,000 questionnaires sent to former graduate students who were enrolled in 24 universities and it seemed to show many past fears to be groundless.
The dropouts rate was found to be 31 per cent, and in most cases the dropouts, while not completing the Ph. D. requirement, went on to productive work. They are not only doing well financially, but, according to the report, are not far below the income levels of those who went on to complete their doctorates.
Discussing the study last week, Dr. Tucker said the project was initiated ‘because of the concern frequently expressed by graduate faculties and administrators that some of the individuals who dropped out of Ph. D. programs were capable of competing the requirement for the degree. Attrition at the Ph. D. level is also thought to be a waste of precious faculty time and a drain on university resources already being used to capacity. Some people expressed the opinion that the shortage of highly trained specialists and college teachers could be reduced by persuading the dropouts to return to graduate schools to complete the Ph. D.’
“The results of our research” Dr. Tucker concluded, “did not support these opinions.”
Lack of motivation was the principal reason for dropping out.
Most dropouts went as far in their doctoral program as was consistent with their levels of ability or their specialities.
Most dropouts are now engaged in work consistent with their education and motivation.
Nearly 75 per cent of the dropouts said there was no academic reason for their decision, but those who mentioned academic reason cited failure to pass the qualifying examination, uncompleted research and failure to pass language exams. Among the single most important personal reasons identified by dropouts for non-completion of their Ph. D. program, lack of finances was marked by 19 per cent.
As an indication of how well the dropouts were doing, a chart showed 2% in humanities were receiving $ 20,000 and more annually while none of the Ph. D. ‘s with that background reached this figure. The Ph. D. ‘s shone in the $ 7,500 to $ 15,000 bracket with 78% at that level against 50% for the dropouts. This may also be an indication of the fact that top salaries in the academic fields, where Ph. D. ‘s tend to rise to the highest salaries, are still lagging behind other fields.
As to the possibility of getting dropouts back on campus, the outlook was glum. The main condition which would have to prevail for at least 25 % of the dropouts who might consider returning to graduate school would be to guarantee that they would retain their present level of income and in some cases their present job.
小題1:The author states that many educators feel that
[A] steps should be taken to get the dropouts back to campus.
the fropouts should return to a lower quality school to continue their study.
[C] the Ph. D. holder is generally a better adjusted person than the dropout.
[D] The high dropouts rate is largely attributable to the lack of stimulation on the part of faculty members.
小題2:Research has shown that
[A] Dropouts are substantially below Ph. D. ‘s in financial attainment.
the incentive factor is a minor one in regard to pursuing Ph. D. studies.
[C] The Ph. D. candidate is likely to change his field of specialization if he drops out.
[D] about one-third of those who start Ph. D. work do not complete the work to earn the degree.
小題3:Meeting foreign language requirements for the Ph. D.
[A] is the most frequent reason for dropping out.
is more difficult for the science candidate than for the humanities candidate.
[C] is an essential part of many Ph. D. programs.
[D] does not vary in difficulty among universities.
小題4:After reading the article, one would refrain from concluding that
[A] optimism reigns in regard to getting Ph. D. dropouts to return to their pursuit of the degree.
a Ph. D. dropout, by and large, does not have what it takes to learn the degree.
[C] colleges and universities employ a substantial number of Ph. D. dropouts.
[D] Ph. D. ‘s are not earning what they deserve in nonacademic positions.
小題5:It can be inferred that the high rate of dropouts lies in
[A] salary for Ph. D. too low.
academic requirement too high.
[C] salary for dropouts too high.
[D] 1000 positions.

Last year, over 206,000 students from the United States studied abroad. Does that number surprise you? These students already know the benefits of studying abroad. You may be wondering why you should study abroad. Here are some answers for you.
◆ Timing
The absolutely best time in your life to study abroad is when you are in college. If you miss this opportunity, it’s almost impossible for you to do it later in life.
◆ To gain cross-cultural experience
Life overseas makes you see your everyday world in a whole new light. You don’t even realize it, but our culture shapes the way we view the world and affects us every minute of the day. Differences in culture are more than just differences in language, food, clothing and art.
◆ To improve your communication skills and your self-confidence
People who study abroad tend to be willing to take risks, willing to put themselves in unusual situations, and able to solve problems.
◆ To become more fluent in a language or to learn a new language
The world market is becoming smaller, and many companies require a second language. Foreign languages are not only valuable in the job market but also valuable in the real world.
◆ For the adventure
Travel to other cities within your host country and around neighboring countries. As you get to know your new classmates, roommates, and host family, you will gain a unique view on the host culture. Discover the differences and, more importantly, the many similarities between your worlds. The friendships you make will last long after the program.
◆ To learn more about yourself
Find out who you really are. What are your limits? How do you overcome the difficulties you’ve never encountered before? How independent are you? These questions are hard to answer until you are removed from your usual surroundings. After solving difficult problems on your own overseas, you’ll find that almost nothing will confuse you at home.
