18.Swimming is one of those activities that can be learned early in life.Little children can learn to swim as soon as they walk.In fact, you need the same skills in walking as in swimming. However,I believe that five is the best age to learn.By five or six,a child knows fear of water,a very important thing to know. It's wise to be afraid,to recognize true danger.Young ones understand that the water can sometimes be very dangerous.
To really benefit from swimming, every swimmer should learn,as soon as possible, these four basic strokes:butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and crawl.I feel that one of these---the breaststroke is different from the others, since some young swimmers use this stroke naturally, without any training.
In swimming there are certain rules every swimmer should follow:
1.Never swim alone! No matter how good you are in the water, don't risk drowning by swimming alone. If you swim by yourself, with no life guards or friends with you,you may get into trouble.
2.Don't go beyond your abilities. Most swimmers know enough not to swim too far from the bank or the beach.Showing off by doing dangerous tricks is no good.Swim safely and you will continue to swim and alive.
3.Don't smoke.Swimming depends on a healthy body; good lungs are part of it.
4.Work at any activity that builds muscles.

8.Perfume(香水)-A Promise in a Bottle
"Perfume,"says expert perfumer Sophia Grojsman,"is a promise in a bottle."That promise might be reflected in a perfume's name:Joy,Pleasures,or Beautiful,for example.Millions of dollars are spent on the marketing of a perfume,trying to get customers to connect attraction or attitude to a fragrance.
Even without the marketing,fragrance has power over our thoughts and feelings.Some scientists insist that memory and smell are especially closely linked.Certain aromas(氣味)have the power to call up deep memories.Perfume makers are aware of this and use aromas that can touch us deeply.
The Power of Aromas
Of every ten new perfumes put on the market,perhaps only one will succeed.It's risky to try,as a company introducing a new fragrance can easily run through a budget of 20million dollars.Profits(利潤),however,can be very high.One successful fragrance,CK One from designer Calvin Klein,made 250million dollars in its first year.
In the perfume world,the most basic and important quality is the material with its own special aroma.Some are natural,coming from flowers,plants,or wood,for example.Others are synthetic materials,that is,the materials which are not natural but made with the help of science.According to expert perfumer Harry Fremont,a good fragrance"is a balance between naturals and synthetics".
Image(形象)and Marketing
Sephora is France's leading perfume store.In a store of shining stone,metal,and glass,famous perfumes are shown and guarded like works of art in the nearby Louvre Museum.Salespeople are dressed in black,and each type of perfume is sold in a particularly shaped bottle.In perfume sales,the importance is on presentation at least as much as on the product.
If you're confused about which perfume to buy,perfumer Annie Buzantian offers her advice:you really can't get an idea whether a perfume works or not until you wear it."It's like the difference between a dress on the hanger on the hanger and a dress on your body,"says Buzantian."Your first impression is often the right one."

57.What is the main idea of the first paragraph?A
A.The name is especially important for a perfume.
B.Too much money is wasted on the perfume market.
C.Perfume provides joy,pleasure and beauty to customers.
D.The perfume industry makes promises it can never keep.
58.According to Harry Fremont,a good fragrance is a balance betweenB.
A.fresh flowers and new plants
B.naturals and man-made materials

D.wood and materials with special smell

9.For centuries,the body's blood has been linked closely with the emotions.People who show no human emotions or feelings,are said to be cold-blooded killer.For example,the police are searching for a cold-blooded killer.He seems to kill for no reason,and no emotion,as if taking someone's life as nothing.
Cold can affect other parts of the body.The expression"get cold feet"has nothing to do with cold or your feet.The expression means being afraid to do something you have decided to do.For example,you agree to be president of an organization.But then you learn that all the other officers have resigned (辭職),and all the work of the organization will be your responsibility.You are likely to get cold feet about being president when you understand the situation.
The expression"give someone the cold shoulder"probably comes from the physical act of turning your back toward someone,instead of speaking to him face to face.You may give a cold shoulder to a friend who has not kept a promise he made to you.Or,to someone who has lied about you to others.
A cold fish is not a fish.It is a person.But it is a person who is unfriendly,unemotional and shows no love or warmth.A cold fish does not offer much of himself to anyone.Someone who is a cold fish could be cold-hearted.Now a cold-hearted person is someone who has no sympathy(同情).Several popular songs in recent years were about cold-hearted men or cold-hearted women who,without feelings,broke the hearts of their lovers.
Out in the cold means not getting something that everybody else got.A person might say that everybody but him got a pay raise---he was left out in the cold.And it is not a pleasant place to be.

67.There areA expressions related to cold that are mentioned in the passage.
A.6   B.4    C.3     D.7
68.When you refuse to speak to a man and treat him in a distant way,you may express by"C".
A.I think he is a cold fish
B.I think he is a cold-blooded man
C.I give him the cold shoulder
D.I'm likely to get cold feet
69.We can use the expression"C"to describe a man who hurts his lover without mercy.
A.cold-blooded    B.cold shoulder   C.cold-hearted    D.cold feet
70.The topic of this passage is aboutB.
A.the relationship between cold and our body
B.some expressions connected with cold
C.some expressions about friendship
D.how cold weather comes into being.

6.Scientists can learn about man by studying animals, such as mice, rats and monkeys. The scientists in a laboratory are experimenting on mice and they are studying the relationship between diet and health.
In this experiment, the scientists are studying the relationship between the amount of food the mice can eat and their health. The mice are in three groups. All these groups are receiving the same healthy diet. But the amount of food that each group is receiving is different. The first group is eating one cup of food each day,the second two cups, and the third three cups.
After three years, the healthiest group is the one that is only eating one cup of food each day.The mice in this group are thinner than normal mice but they are more active. Most of the day, they are running, playing with one another, and using the equipment in their cages. Also, they are living longer.Mice usually live for two years, while most of the mice in this group are still alive after three years.

13.You have two eyes and they are set close together on the front of your face.Have you wondered why?The reasons are simple and important to the way you see the rest of your world.
Your eyes are like two small cameras.A camera catches an image of an object and records it on film.Similarly, when you look at something, each eye takes in what it sees and sends this image to the back of the eyeball.Because your eyes are set close together, they view the world from about the same height but from slightly different angles.Working as a team, the eyes send the images to your brain, which puts them together into a single, centered image.
Seeing in stereo means seeing with two eyes working together, which is called stereoscopic sight. This allows you to view the world in three dimensions,or 3-D.Seeing depth helps you to judge the distance between you and the objects you see and to adjust to the changing angle at which you see something as you move closer to or farther away from it.If images are coming from only one eye, however, only two of these dimensions----height and width----can be perceived.A world seen with one eye is thus two-dimensional,as in a photograph.
Now consider why your two eyes are on the front of your face.Think of other animals with the same arrangement. They are all animals that hunt, like lions and wolves.Their eyes face directly in front of them. This provides a field of sight about 180 degrees wide, which is called binocular(雙眼的) sight. On the other hand, animals that are hunted have eyes on the sides of the head, which provides nearly360-degree field of sight. In order to stay alive, they need to see things coming from the sides and from behind. However, without stereoscopic sight, they have difficulty determining how far a danger is.
With sight both stereoscopic and binocular, humans share with animal hunters the ability to see from side to side and to accurately determine the distance. If you think it would be great to have another type of sight, perhaps with hundreds of tiny eyes like many insects do,think again! Each tiny insect eye sees only a tiny part.Besides, what if you needed glasses?Be glad for the eyesight that you have.
67.According to the passage, the similarity of an eye and a camera is that they bothB.
A.can imagine objects

D.work at the same height

A.two eyes close to each other that work together
B.hundreds of eyes, all seeing tiny parts of an image
C.a three-hundred-sixty-degree field of sight
D.one eye on either side of the head, each seeing a different image
69.What is the meaning of the underlined word"perceived"in Para3 most similar to?B

3.You may think your bathroom is often full of bacteria(細菌) and so you give it a complete cleaning once a week.But how often do you clean out and disinfect(消毒) your fridge?Well,probably not often enough,according to a recent study,which found out that the fridge is the second dirtiest place in your house,just behind the bathroom.
Fridge temperatures were often set too high,allowing the growth of bacteria,which included E.coil,Enterobacteria,and S.aureus,all of which will give you an easy access to food poisoning.So what can you do to ensure your fridge---and your food in it---is not a health threat?
For starters,clean the fridge weekly---wipe it and repeat.
Make sure your fridge is at the correct temperature for storing food,between 0and 5degrees centigrade.Your freezer should be below-18degrees centigrade.You can use fridge and freezer thermeters to make sure this is the case.
Some modern fridges have zones to store different types of food,such as meat and vegetables.Make sure you don′t store meat in the vegetable zone,as the temperature there might be higher.
Make sure you don not leave the door open too long as the temperature in the fridge will quickly rise, creating a breeding(繁殖) ground for bacteria.
Cover food that has not been finished, and eat it within a couple of days.
Keep bottles and jars closed.
Keep raw meat away from cooked meat.Both should be well covered to prevent pollution.
Store raw meat at the bottom of the fridge to stop juices dripping onto other foods.
Finally, use common sense, and throw away old food.

33.What do we know from the first paragraph?C
A.People often clean their fridges once a week.
B.A recent study shows the bathroom is the dirtiest place in the house.
C.Many people don′t believe that the fridge is a dirty place.
D.The fridge may not have as many bacteria as the bathroom.
34.Which is the best temperature for storing your food in the fridge?C
A.10°C   B.-2°C    C.4°C   D.-18°C
35.The purpose of this text is toD.
A. introduce some common knowledge about fridges
B.teach people how to fix their fridges
C.guide people to store food properly in their fridges
D. let people know how to keep their fridges clean.

Dress for success.You don't have to be beautiful to be confident.Make the most of your own unique physical characters and weaken your disadvantages.
Listen to yourself.You are the only person who knows what's right for you.Don't put others'opinions above your own inner voice.
Build a confident vocabulary.Stop putting yourself down and give up continually blaming your tiny weaknesses.Learn to show up your strong points and the world will learn to see and celebrate them with you.
Pass on the praise.Praise others for their virtues and strengths.This practice will not decrease your confidence,but help increase it.
